Ram's interview - Dubai

Dubai recently played host to Ram Kapoor, an actor who has made every character that he has played come alive, and hence right now is living the role of Jai Walia, an iconic figure with audiences everywhere. He was in the city shooting for the serial "Kasamh Se"...

(telecast on Zee TV), where in we met him to catch up and know more about this very popular actor.

How does it feel to live the character of Jai Walia?

I love to play Jai Walia. Jai Walia has power, good looks and money.

And what do you think audience loves most about this character?

I feel all of us like to know a person who has power and can carry it off well. Jai Walia is a family guy, who has done everything in his life for his family — he lives for them. All of us have a little bit of him in us. And this is what adds to his universal appeal, men, women love him alike. The character has been etched out really well. Ekta has spent a lot of time on this, even this hairdo that I sport, the white peak, were her ideas. I wasn't so sure initially but now I hear that women love this style, in fact one just called me a George Clooney look alike!

You are known to put a lot of life in your roles, in fact you belong to the method school of acting, but do you think hectic schedules of television industry allow you to do justice to your art?

You are right television industry is very hectic, very cut to cut. We shoot like five episodes a week. Yes I would love to put all my training in method acting to all my roles in fact I try my best, but again it is not enough.

You have a parallel film career as well, have worked with great directors like Sudhir Mishra,in critically acclaimed films like "Hazaron Khwaishen Aisi", so what is that one role that you would love to do in your life time, your coup de grace?

Ah..films, they do allow me the luxury of time to experiment.. and definitely I would like to have that one film to my name which will be you know 'my coup de grace' as you say. In fact I am great Robert de Niro fan, and any of his roles would be dream come true for me. I would love to do what he did in Raging Bull.

Coming to reason you are here in Dubai, tell us about your one most memorable experience of shooting here?

Oh I love this place. It is so beautiful and so well-planned. In fact I have so many lovely memories from here..and hence I would like recount two. We were shooting at Dubai creekside yesterday and it was so hot — we were dying of thirst — and it was then we got to respect the holy month of Ramadan so much. The faith in people which allows them to control and fast even in such conditions, really it is amazing, to see people all around us continuing all their normal activities in the same hot humid outdoor conditions while fasting. And secondly at this party organised by Zee Network, Ahlan wa Sahlan we got to meet some amazing fans — you know a bunch of really cute Filipino ladies — who are great fans of Kasamh Se. I was astonished they were such big fans of the show. They learnt to speak a bit of Hindi to be able to understand the show better. It gratifies us as an actor to see such cross cultural acceptance.

So what more to expect from Ram Kapoor the actor and the person?

For next 2-3 years it is Kasamh Se all the way. I just want to put in a lot of good work, just want to have all this love and devotion. And on a personal level want to be able to be a wonderful husband to my wife Gautami and my beautiful little daughter — enjoy my new fatherhood to fullest
