Authorities 'duty-bound to maintain law and order'

Hindu group threatens to disrupt Pakistan matches

AFP

October 4, 2006

A right-wing Hindu group has threatened to prevent Pakistan from playing in India in the Champions Trophy scheduled to start this week, officials have announced. The Shiv Sena, which has a powerful presence in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, said the step was to protest against the bombings of trains in the state's capital Mumbai in July that killed 186 people.

"How can they allow Pakistan to play matches in our country when the Mumbai police have evidence of its [Pakistan's] involvement in the July 11 terror attack?" Udhav Thackeray , the Shiv Sena's executive president, said in comments published Wednesday.

Last weekend, Mumbai police chief AN Roy publicly accused Pakistan's spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), of orchestrating the attacks on trains that left 800 people wounded.

Thackeray did not elaborate on the Shiv Sena's plans to obstruct the Champions Trophy's Mumbai fixtures, which also includes the final on November 5.

Pakistan will fly to Mumbai only if they reach the final. Two of their three league matches are in the northern city of Mohali and the third in Jaipur. The semi-finals will be held in Mohali and Jaipur.

Maharashtra authorities said they would not allow any disruptions if Pakistan reach the final. "Right now it is a hypothetical question but we are duty-bound to maintain law and order in the state," Home Secretary AP Sinha, who handle's the state's internal security, told AFP. "We have the warning but I will not issue comments on the remarks of a political leader."

A senior official in India's home ministry added that the Shiv Sena's threat has been passed on to Jaipur and Mohali: "Stadiums in these cities will be sanitised and extra security will be provided in view of this development".

The Shiv Sena had dug up the pitch in New Delhi's Feroze Shah Kotla ground in 1999, eight years after damaging the ground of Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium to protest the Pakistani cricket team's presence in India.

thanks for the article.... thats really weird... how did that incident cum in, i mean wat doz our paki team have anything to do with that... they probably dont think about anything besides cricket on their tours to other countries and they r relating the paki team to the terror attacks that happened in india....😕....hope this issue doz not get dragged on.

Younis refuses to captain Pakistan !

October 5, 2006

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- Pakistan batsman Younis Khan has refused to lead his country in the Champions Trophy in India, a Pakistani Cricket Board official said on Thursday.

Younis announced his decision at a scheduled news conference in Lahore.

He was due to step up vice-captain to replace Inzamam-ul-Haq, who has been banned for four one-day matches.

Inzaman was suspended for bringing the game into disrepute as a result of Pakistan's refusal to take the field after the ball-tampering furore on the fourth day of the fourth test against England at the Oval in August.

"I don't want to be a dummy captain and the reason why I have refused the captaincy will be revealed afterward," Younis told reporters at the press conference in Lahore.

Younis was scheduled to give a full press conference ahead of the team's departure for Jaipur on Saturday but instead he turned up, uttered one sentence and left.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) director of operations Saleem Altaf told reporters: "Younis has not told us any reason and we are in negotiations with him. As soon as we get any details we will reveal them to the media."

The PCB was holding an emergency briefing at its headquarters in Lahore between chairman Shaharyar Khan and other officials.

Stylish 28-year-old batsman Younis has led Pakistan in two Tests and two one-day internationals, winning and losing one each in both forms of the game.

Pakistan open their Champions Trophy campaign against a qualifier in Jaipur on October 17.

Why Younis quit: Shaharyar snub and tussle in team
Friday, October 06, 2006 at 0000 hrs Print

Karachi, October 5: The indifferent attitude of fellow players and a perceived snub by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan are the two reasons which seem to have prompted Younis Khan to step down from captaincy this morning.

Two days before Champions Trophy, Younis says won't be dummy captain After a dramatic day that saw Younis declining to lead Pakistan during the Champions Trophy, and Mohammed Yousuf taking over as new captain, it is learnt that a string of events over the past few days triggered the crisis.

Sources close to Younis said that he was unhappy with the attitude of some players during the camp with the Shaharyar incident this morning adding fuel to the fire.

"He was unhappy and apprehensive about the attitude of players, including Yousuf, (Abdul) Razzaq and Shahid Afridi, on the first day of the conditioning camp yesterday. To make matters worse, Shoaib Akhtar's 'I am superior' attitude also bothered him," said the sources.

"This morning when he went to see Shaharyar Khan, he was made to wait outside the office and was told that Shaharyar was at a meeting, something which has never happened when Inzamam-ul-Haq was captain," they said. "Younis was not interested in captaincy in the first place, even after Inzamam was banned for four matches by the ICC last week. But strangely, Inzamam, after his disciplinary hearing, himself announced in London that Younis would be captain," the sources said.

"For the last one week Younis had been apprehensive, because he knew the above players were not in his favour of holding the captaincy. It was a case of their attitude in the camp that convinced him to step down from captaincy and just play as a batsman," they added.

During his meeting with board officials today, Younis made it clear that he had made up his mind as he could not compromise with his self-respect, PCB sources added.

It was a stand that threatened his place in the team, they said. PCB Director (cricket operations) Saleem Altaf, during an emergency meeting of the Board's Ad-hoc Committee that named Yousuf as skipper, had suggested that Younis be dropped for the Champions Trophy, but other members said this would only deepen the crisis, the source said.

It is learnt that some top PCB officials had also met Younis to convince him to change his mind but he didn't relent. "Inzamam and assistant coach Mushtaq Ahmed also met him and took him to see Shaharyar Khan, but that didn't change the situation," the source said.

PCB media director Abbas Zaidi said it was "unfortunate" and "regrettable" that Younis chose to announce his withdrawal from captaincy without consulting the Board.

Zaidi said that while Younis had told the PCB chairman that he didn't want to be captain, he also expressed regret over the manner in which he chose to make his decision public.

A close friend of Younis, meanwhile, dismissed theories that he had resigned as captain because of the selection of young Faisal Iqbal as a replacement for Inzamam in the team. "That is not true although Younis had his apprehensions about the composition of the team owing to attitude of some players," he said.

The friend also ruled out the possibility of Younis withdrawing from the captaincy because the PCB chose Inzamam as captain for the upcoming home series against the West Indies starting November 7.

Younis's mentor and former captain Rashid Latif said Younis' decision was a "sad day" for Pakistan. "To him, there is nothing greater than honour and respect. The Board should find out the real reasons (behind this)," he said.
