Johnny, Johnny,
Yes, Papa,
Eating sugar?
No, Papa
Telling lies?
No, Papa
Open your mouth
O Ha! Ha! Ha!

This is the poem we learnt in our child hood. Some how we understood that telling lies is a sin and we should'nt tell lies at any circumstances. As we grow big we face several challenges in the life and we lose the innocense and try to become tough.

Do u tell lies any time?

Is it better to lie than telling a harsh truth?

TRUTH or LIE?

Don't u feel telling truth(in grave situations) is really act of courageous people?

Whenever I say a lie I defend myselves by recollecting the words

"Satyam Bruyat,Priyam Bruyat,Na Bruyat satyam apriyam"

(meaning is tell truth, tell sweet words, never tell the truth which is not sweet).

Cheers,

Mythili

eee... my parents have made a very strict thing: NEVER lie to us!

I get consessions if i speak the truth in front of my parents.. e.g. they won't scold me...

harsh truth... u can hide it for a while.. but can't change the reality.. so why lie..

but telling truth is an art... we learn it through life experiances 😛

Sometimes, certain situations demand that the truth not be disclosed for bringing out the harsh truth in the open would be reopening wounds, would be kindling forgotten memories, or may be detrimental to the person who has to bear the truth.

At times like this, when this is excercised with discretion, telling lies is not a sin.

We get the biggest example in the Mahabharata... when Dharamraj Yudisthir was faced with the dilemma when he had to tell Acharya Drone something which will make him put down his bow in the battle. An upright person, whose reputation was that he never spoke a lie, he was persuaded by Lord Krishna to tell Acharya Drone that Ashwathama was dead. The deceased Ashwathama was not Acharya Drone's son, but an elephant bearing the same name. The lore goes that Yudishtir said "Ashwathama (said boldly) the elephant ( said very faintly) is no more (said boldly)....... It was neither a lie, nor was it the full truth.... But in the interest of Dharma, it was neccessary for the Kuaravas to lose the battle and Acharya Drone had to lay down his life.

Therefore, to achieve something, you need to sometimes say half truths or even lies.

But as they say, a lie never goes unpunished.

The Mahabharata says that the chariot of Dharamraj Yudishtir never touched Mother Earth, he was so pure and so honest and upright, that his chariot always stood two inches above the ground, demonstrating that he was completely detached from the worldly cares, having risen above them. The minute he spoke those words, his chariot came down from its lofty position to join those on the ground. 😊

Good question Mythili.

I can hardly lie. Even if I try I can not lie much. But then if I don't want to reveal truth I usually try to avoid question. Maybe that person gets the clue, but I just try to avoid it..😛

Now so far I have not been in an extereme situation where my lie could be life and death situation. I guess it's ok to lie to save a falling sky. I don't think there is anything wrong...but to lie to save your rear or just to protect your evil is bad bad bad. I would go by instict and see what is morally right at that point. So am I saying it's ok to lie? 🤔

Like Maryam,my parents have made it clear. Tell the truth and get less scolding. Lie and get more scoldings! 😳

Wow, priya di. very well said 👏👏 Your example of Yudhistra is very appropriate. Its exactly what my parents once told me 😳

Telling the truth is not a skill. Its easier. Telling lies requires a skill.😉 It requires u to think on what exactly to lie, lie properly so as not to be caught and more importantly remember what and when u lied about what. If u cant do it, your caught!

Isnt it easier to speak the truth? Its just what happened. It requires no complicated thinking, no contemplating, no use of memory. 😉

Yes, it is better to tell the truth. But at times, like pointed out, it may be better to lie. I am not advocating lying. But well, it depends on what the situation calls. Like priya di said, certain situations call for a person to lie. If lying were to bring about a greater good, then why not?

BTW great topic Mythili ji

Ok........so sometimes the truth can be harsh, and originally that's why many people hide the truth - cause they're afraid of what the listeners reaction will be!

A lie seems to be the best thing in the world - you can hide the truth and put on an act in front of others.........but when the truth comes out in the end, it just complicates things even more!

What I've learnt is that if you can't say the truth - don't say anything else at all....otherwise you get in to even more trouble!
