CHAPTER 8
I hear your confusion when you speak to me,
you answer questions with questions,

When they first met Bani believed that they were only going to be friends. Jai mentioned it clearly to her. It was not going to be a romantic meeting but a friendly one. The two times they shared a kiss was on their first night together when he kissed her cheek before saying goodbye, and then when they went out on a second date. The other times Bani gave him the hint that there were not going to be anymore kisses and Jai seemed to understand. Bani didn't want to be hurt and Jai found it fair since he didn't want to tell her his secret.
" I love you, and because I love you, I would sooner have you hate me for telling you the truth, than adore me for telling you lies."
"Bani, I own most of this city. Well, my father bought most of it but I have inherited it. I am Jai Krishna …….. W…W....Walia."
"Walia?" Bani exclaimed. She knew and had heard a lot about the Walia family. They were up in popularity like the Ambanis and Hindujas. They literally owned most of all the real estates like the Plaza, Theaters, Restaurants, Banks, and God knows what else. He was a millionaire, billionaire …………….. a man who could have anything he wanted. Anything. Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere. If her memory served her well, Jai Walia was also supposed to be a married man ………… she panicked, tears welled up in her eyes, she didn't know what to say, what to think, what to do.
"Aren't you m …. m….. married." Bani finally said trembling.
"Well I almost was, but it did not go through, we called it off on "the" day itself", said Jai with a sigh and lost look in his eyes. He was engaged to be married to Roshni Chopra, his college sweetheart, who also belonged to a rich socialite family. She did not care for a life in Mumbai, she found it too down market and wanted to continue to live in London, where her family had now settled down. However, she was not the type to settle down, she always wanted to live in the fast lane and Jai was finding it difficult to keep up with her. Their courtship years consisted of attending parties, discos, family outings at exotic locales, dinners at expensive restaurants, shopping sprees etc. etc. nothing of which interested him completely …………. what really interested him was love, togetherness and friendship and that was completely lacking in his relationship with Roshni.
The last straw was bent when Roshni got pregnant and decided to go ahead and abort the child without Jai's knowledge and approval because she felt that having a family was not her priority in life, she had a figure and life style to maintain, and having a child would cramp all her joys and dampen her free spirit. Jai could take it no more, the death of his unborn child meant the death of his relationship with Roshni.
On the morning of their wedding day, Jai received news accidentally about Roshni's pregnancy and her solution to that "problem" as she termed it. When he confronted her, she told him it was the best decision she had taken in her life, after all it was HER LIFE, HER BODY, HER …… HER……. HER …… there was no mention of US even once. Jai decided to call off the wedding and parted ways with Roshni much to her family's annoyance and his father's disapproval, not that Jai cared. Roshni tried her best to make amends, but Jai was just not interested. He wanted to start afresh.
Bani was shocked "I don't know what to say" she said.
"Nothing. Forget about that part of my life. Forget who I am or who I was with. Just remember the days we have shared. The talks we have had. The good ones. The ones that were meaningful and truthful." Jai sounded serious.
But why should she forget who he was, why should she forget that he has been lying to her all this time?
"Alright Jai. For now, we will not discuss it." Bani finally said, but deep down she was not completely convinced about her decision.
That night Bani could hardly sleep. She felt so out of place now and so cheated. The man whom she was getting along with so well had a secret so deep she couldn't figure out how to accept it. She had been foolish enough to believe that she was his first love, before her no woman meant anything to him, though he has been out with many. Had he really gotten over Roshni or was Jai on a rebound …….. did he really love her and care for her, or was she just some part- time balm he way using to soothe his wounds. She was a no one compared to him. If at all, he deserved someone who was more refined, more worthy of his status, someone who would fit in his kind of society. What would his parents think? How would they treat her? What if Roshni decided to come back and have a baby with him after all? What if she could not have a baby with him, would he dump her too? Would Bani ever be happy with Jai, would she have an identity of her own? So many questions …………… the answers to which were very bleak.
Jai's family had their own widespread mansion where they spent their days. It was called The Walia House. A huge place surrounded by gardens and murals covered in diverse plant life, a huge pool, jacuzzi, tennis courts, private beach …………. basically the works. It was a natural art, a must see attraction for tourists. The house, which she had visited when she was a child, was grand and full of countless rooms and plenty of large french windows, very very classy and it stinked of richness. How could or should she behave around him now? No wonder all those women were oggling at him and looking nastily at her, while they were on their first date at the Plaza. She felt so out of his league now and very very uncomfortable knowing he had almost fathered a child. He asked her to forget about this new revelation ……… but how could she?
Jai was driving down to the office. The office which became his second home. The place where he saw his father slave through mountains of papers and binders full of what he thought at the time were letters with meaningless writings. He was always a carefree child who got all he wanted with the love of a great mother. But he lacked the fatherly attention he so needed. Now the memories of his father only lay in that office facing the street that displayed 9 out of 10 buildings belonging to him. He was hesitant about taking over the business but his father had placed the responsibility on him since birth. Being the only male in the family was not easy but his mother tried her best to ground him.
When his father retired Jai insisted on not being too public about it and thankfully the newspaper, which was operating as another of the family's assets, published a short and sweet article that did not draw too much public attention. So far everything was going well in business. But Jai felt alone and without the companionship he wanted. He was completely heart broken after his relationship with Roshni ended. He felt disillusioned. The women that surrounded his everyday life thereafter were not the type he considered as ideal. They all wanted him to purchase luxury items, eat at expensive restaurants, go on expensive holidays ... Pia Shukla wanted a diamond bracelet for her birthday and was obviously disappointed when he simply gave her a basket of flowers and chocolates and took her to dinner instead. He smiled as he remembered her flushed face and indignation. The attempt for her to smile was too harsh. She never phoned him again like he expected.
But Bani, when he read her ad in the paper that morning. He knew there was something special about her. A woman who worked and stayed home. Did all these things with her hands. So creative in her own timid way. The crafts, the music, the reading, and the writing. All these things that made him wonder what she would be like in flesh. What would she say? But primarily, would she recognize him? It seemed that everyone else knew about him. But she was so into her solitude that she seemed not to care about who he was. At first he thought because of her first reaction that she did know who he was. But it was all about the superficial and he was glad that he talked her out of it.
As he was entering the office's parking lot he saw no one. It was so early. He wanted to be alone before everyone else got in. The entrance was damp with the residue of the late night shower. It was damp but comfortable in temperature. He picked up the newspaper that was lying on the front door and walked in after unlocking it. He didn't bother to turn on the lights of the rest of the building for he knew how to move around in the dark.
As he stepped into his office he did turn on the lamp on his desk. There he found messages taken after he had left at lunch time yesterday. He noticed there were calls from some of the renters he knew, but a particular message caught his eye. BANI. He picked it up as he was sitting down on his chair. The call was placed about 2 hours after he had confessed his true identity to her and his past relationship with Roshni. Why didn't she call him at home? Why did she call and leave a message at work? He did not have a good feeling about this, not one bit.
"I love you Bani not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me. I love you for the part of me that you bring out. I love you because you make me feel alive and wanted ……… is it so difficult to understand my love and accept it."
