"Ahh Virat put me down. I'm going to fall." She screamed in excitement.
She hugged him tight. Breaking free from the hug she cupped his cheeks, "You are here? Am I dreaming? I'm so happy. You have no idea how much I missed you." With tears in her eyes she hugged him again.
He hugged her back tightly and kissed her hair. The past few weeks he got held up at school so he couldn't visit her and he missed her like crazy. "I missed you more babe. I love you."
She arched her feet to stand on her toes and then kissed him lightly on his unsuspecting lips.
He was stunned, afterall she never kissed him in public but soon he too kissed her back. His one hand rested on the small of her back and his other wrapped around her neck, her hands caressed his hair and pulled him closer to her.
They were lost in the moment; unaware of the time and the place, they kissed each other fervently.
They quickly broke apart after they heard Manvi's friends coughing.
"Get a room you two." One of Manvi's friends joked.
While another one of her friends said, "Manvi incase you have forgotten we were going for lunch? It seems like you are not hungry for food but for something else." This resulted in all of her friends laughing.
Manvi blushed a deeper shade of pink.
Sensing the situation Virat quickly stepped in, "You guys common cut us some slack. We hadn't seen each other for weeks."
"We never stopped you. Go ahead with your PDA Romeo and Juliet." Ricky, a friend of Manvi joked.
"Nice meeting you too dude." Virat sarcastically replied and playfully punched him.
All of Manvi's friends were close with Virat too. After 'Virat Manvi' teasing session everyone left for lunch.
"Virat man we haven't seen you for weeks. What were you upto? Did you find a new girlfriend?" Ricky nudged Manvi and teased Virat.
"He was busy with Alisha." Manvi answered rolling her eyes at Virat.
Virat put his arms around her and brought her closer. "Baby common now. We were partners for a project. The end. You need to quit this jealousy act." "And to answer your question Rick I was busy with school man. Infact I need to get back tonight, I have a presentation tomorrow."
Manvi shoved his hands away and frowned at him, "You are leaving today?"
Manvi's friends realized that the couple probably needed some private time so they left the table.
"You have fun with tackling your girlfriend. We don't need to witness this. See you later buddy, if you are alive- we all know Manvi is capable of murder." Ricky patted Virat's shoulder and left with everyone else.
"Ricky leave before I murder you." Manvi glared at him.
After everyone left Manvi folded her arms and looked the other way. Virat put his arms around her and kissed her shoulder. "Baby common you know I want to stay with you."
She looked at him and caressed his temples. "Then stay, please, atleast for a day."
"I can't. I have a huge presentation tomorrow. Please understand." He hopefully asked.
"Fine. But you will come back as soon as you can?"
"Always."
"If you have a huge presentation tomorrow why did you come today? Why did you drive three hours just to spend couple of hours here?" She questioned.
"I don't know. I felt like it. Truthfully speaking I was restless all morning and I found myself grabbing my car keys to come here. I couldn't stop myself, I had to see you. I know it sounds weird." He truthfully answered.
She kissed his lips and looked deeply in his eyes, "What is wrong? Is something bothering you?"
He didn't know how to answer her question. What should he tell her when he didn't know it himself. "I don't know. I saw a bad dream and I felt like I was losing you. I was holding your hand and the next minute you weren't there. It was a nightmare but ever since I have this sinking feeling."
She held his hands and tried to calm him down, "It was just a bad dream. Nothing else. Don't think about it too much. I will always hold your hand no matter what. You are not getting rid of me ever."
He touched his forehead with hers. "I don't want to. I love you Manvi."
"I love you too." She lovingly kissed his forehead.
"Listen mom called me." He changed the topic.
"Really? What did aunty say?"
"She told me after I get my masters I should get married."
"So?" She didn't know where this was going.
He shook his head at his girlfriend's innocence.
"I told her to find a nice, homely, cultured girl for me."
Before Manvi could punch him he caught her hands, "Idiot I told her I love someone and I want to marry her."
She heaved a sigh of relief so he gave her a 'really' look.
"What are you suggesting?" She still couldn't figure out where this was going.
"I think I have to spell it out to you. You are such a tubelight."
He took a ring out of his pocket and asked, "Manvi Chaudhary will you marry me?"
Manvi got up, caught his wrist and walked out of the cafeteria angrily. She took him to a nearby park.
"You are useless Virat; the most unromantic guy on the planet. I mean who proposes in the school cafeteria?" She huffed and sat on the bench.
He kneeled down and held his ears. "I'm sorry. I wanted to plan something special but I couldn't wait to ask you. I promise I will take you out on a date next week."
She looked at him suspiciously.
"Manvi I love you, more than anything in this world. I want to be with you for the rest of my life. Please marry me?"
His little speech melted her heart and she too kneeled on the ground. "Ofcourse I will marry you. I love you too."
They kissed passionately enjoying the moment. They weren't just girlfriend boyfriend anymore, they were fiances now.
Warning: Read till here if you want a happy ending.
Right when they were having their moment Manvi's phone beeped.
"That is my cue to leave. Class time." She kissed his lips one more time and got up pulling him up with her.
He held her by the waist and kissed her neck, "Do you have to go?" He asked hopefully.
"Sorry I have to. I can't miss today's lecture. I will meet you right after class." She kissed him quickly and started to walk away.
For some reason he didn't want to let her go. He held her wrist, "How about I come to class with you?"
She shook her head at her fiance, "Fine but if you get bored not my fault."
"Done."
"You brought your boyfriend with you?" Manvi's best friend Jeevika giggled.
"Nope I brought my fiance with me." Manvi announced proudly and showed off her ring.
Jeevika could not believe her eyes. She jumped up in joy and screamed, to which the entire class stared at her like she was some lunatic.
"Shoot I forgot to finish my paper for the next class. Manvi can you take the notes? I will have to miss this lecture." Jeevika asked.
"Sure you go ahead and finish up your notes."
"You're the best my newly engaged friend." Jeevika gave a huge smile and left.
Manvi and Virat sat together in the front row. Throughout the class Virat held Manvi's left hand and kissed it frequently.
"Virat it was a bad idea to bring you along. I can't concentrate." She whispered.
"I didn't know I had this effect on you Mrs. Manvi Virat Vadhera." He smirked.
She blushed deeply hearing her name with his, "We are not married yet."
"We will be soon."
Suddenly they heard people screaming and some gun shots. Manvi clutched Virat's hand, "Virat what is going on?"
Out of nowhere a middle aged man entered the room and shot down the professor and started shooting everyone else in the room.
Nobody had time to make a run for it. Before they could even grasp the situation the man had already gunned down more than half of the people in the room.
Those who were still alive in the room crouched on the floor with their hands covering their head. Without thinking twice Virat shielded Manvi with his body. His muscular body completely covered her petite body.
The gunman went around the room shooting down every single person in the room. Virat was shot twice, on his head and on his spine.
Manvi stayed under Virat without moving an inch. She didn't know what was going on. All she remembered was the professor getting shot then Virat pulling her on the floor and now she was under him. Tears refused to flow from her eyes as she realized what just happened. It was suddenly quiet.
She patted Virat's back, "Baby he is gone. Get up."
No answer. Virat didn't move.
"Baby get up. We need to help others. Baby get up."
She felt something wet on his back. It was blood.
She freed herself from underneath him and looked at him lying on the floor.
"Virat Virat." She shook his lifeless body.
She looked around the room. The gunman was dead on the floor, he shot himself. Her classmates, her professor were all dead, covered in blood.
"Virat please get up. You are scaring me." She shook his body again and laid his head on her lap. She noticed the gunshot on his head. She checked for his pulse, his heartbeat.
"No Virat please. Virat. Somebody help. Help. Helppp." She screamed.
"Virat you can't leave me. Virat wake up. You have a presentation tomorrow. You... you.. you need to drive back. Virat wake up. We just got engaged to get married. You' you still need to introduce me to your mom. There is so much left to do Virat. Get up." She screamed like a mad woman but he was gone. No matter how much she shook his lifeless body it wasn't going to bring him back.
She kissed his lips, his forehead, his hands. She covered his face with kisses. "You can't do this to me. You can't leave me alone. No Virat. Why did you come, why. I don't want you here. Get up and go back to your school. Get up." She shook his body.
Soon security and first responders entered the room.
"Help Please save him." She cried.
One of the first responders hurried towards her.
"Him please. He is my fianc. He is not breathing. Do something."
The guy checked Virat's pulse and heartbeat. "I'm sorry he is no more."
"Please try again. He can't die. I'm sure he is fine. Please try again. Please." She weeped.
"Have you been shot? Let me get take you outside and get you medical help."
"Please do something. Please. Take him to the hospital please." She cried not listening to him.
"Ma'am we have to move you and the body out of here."
"He has a name, he is Virat. He is alive. You are not helping. Save him." She screamed in panic.
That day the deranged man took forty five lives and killed himself too. Those who survived the incident weren't better off either. The ghastly incident left a deep impact on them and hence made it impossible for them to get over the incident.
The families of those college kids were scarred for life. Nothing is worse than losing a child, when you lose your child nothing can fill in the void. Vanshika lost her son. After her husband's death all she had was Virat and Viren, now Virat was gone too. Viren lost his only brother, his only sibling.
Perhaps they should have said forty six people died instead of forty five because after the incident Manvi forgot to live. The guilt, the pain of losing her partner killed her everyday. She wanted to kill herself but she couldn't, not when she knew the sacrifice it took to save her life. His nightmare indeed turned out to be true. They got separated. But she didn't lose hope. She knew he was somewhere out there waiting for her; there is no Virat without Manvi and vice versa.
She pursued a career in psychology and became a psychiatrist. If that gunman was given proper treatment he wouldn't have shot down so many people. Virat would still be alive. She'd be happy. So she opened up free psychiatric evaluation centers all over the country and passed a bill in congress which made it mandatory for everyone to get a psychiatric evaluation done every six months.
She had everything- name, fame, money yet she was lonely. There wasn't a day she didn't miss him.
At the age of 38 Manvi passed away while saving a child in a road accident. Like she always believed he was there waiting for her.
"I missed you bandariya." He kissed her cheeks.
She simply stared at him with tears in her eyes.
