Five years after mukti left,
The Lost Love
Chapter 1
In an almost unknown yet a beautiful part of India laid a small but an elegant resort, even at night when the stars were the only source of light the resort stood out from the vast area of trees, sincerely gleaming in the midst of the serenity of its own surroundings. The only unsettling feature of this resort was the "For Sale" sign marked with very harsh red paint.
It was a moonless night; the stars were trying to show off their colours through the cover of the sinister rain clouds floating in the the heavens. On the roof top of the resort, on a half broken couch, a girl in her mid twenties was looking at the same willful stars for inspiration. She then with a deep sigh looked down at the blank pages of her journal resting on her lap. She brought down her pen, started to write whatever the things that were circling in her mind,
"It has been almost five years now; still I can't stop thinking what if… I still can't get him out of my mind. I don't understand why, why I cry so much for someone who never loved me in return, why am I crying for a love I lost almost five years ago, for a lost love that was never my own"
She could feel her thoughts making her eyes heavy with tears, when she took one of her hands to wipe her eyes, a sudden puff of air turned the pages of her journal. When she turned it back to the place where she left off, a tiny rain drop fell from the sky and on to her journal and blotted the last line of her writing, then mixed with an unstopped tear that fell from her eyes, the last line of her journal was left as a one big blue slob of ink. She looked at the line that was no longer there, attempting to remember what she wrote last.
"Mukti..!! It's starting to rain, come inside" called a woman from down stairs.
"Ha, ha.. I'm coming…Aunty"
And she ran down stairs clutching her journal tightly.
She had being upon the roof top for two hours and it was almost midnight. She kept it in her hands through out the rest of the night, listening to her uncle and aunt's conversation without much interest, and only when it came to the time for her to sleep, that she placed her journal away from her hands, but beside her bed. She closed her eyes wishing for tomorrow to be better than yesterday.
Next day the sun showed its customary poise up on the town of the same village where mukti's resort was situated, it wasn't a busy town but there were small clusters of people loafing in and out of the old colonial buildings.
There was just one shop that could be considered as made in the modern times, that is if one considers modern times as the 1980's. It was a sort of souvenir cum local handicraft shop. The owner of the shop was fussing over the only two major buyers to have recently set foot in to his shop. He was running behind them trying to catch their attention to different items in the shop wiping the sheets of dust on them. They were a young, well dressed couple, seemed to be rich beyond anyone he knew so if they were together or not together the owner could care less.
And he was saying whatever that was necessary to the customers in order to sell his goods.
"Sir I think the madam would love to have this ring, this design is very unique" said the owner, his spectacled eyes shining with hope. He who was few steps behind the gentlemen again called for attention gently saying,
"Sir?……"
The man turned around annoyed with the owner making him wish he was a turtle, so he could hide him self securely.
The angered man walked over swinging the cane in his hand as if he was getting his blade ready for a war.
"Would you just shut up for a second, and I'll decide what I want.. you annoying… old man"
"Prem just leave it…" said his shopping companion while she grabbed the ring out of the owners hand, then she looking selfishly at the ring asked,
"Isn't it lovely Prem.. will you buy it for me?"
"Why would I buy it for you Debo? If you want it, you buy it… I'm not here to spend my money on anything here and especially not on you… You dragged me in here …and.." he stopped his speech as a sharp flickering white light bothered his eyes.
He moved away from the ongoing conversation to see what the shimmering light was, he was so sure the light was dragging him there forcefully.
Mean while the rich gal "Debo" and the anxious owner were discussing the fine quality of the ring and of course about any other thing that the owner thought he could sell to her.
Prem then at last found the source of the light; it was a little boy standing outside the shop, leaning on to prem's car and flashing a mirror in to his face. He went out side without leaving anytime for the small boy to run off.
"Hey what's your problem?" asked Prem from the little boy who was about four or five years of age.
The boy straightened the cap on his head and asked,
"Hey… uncle w-w…what's your p..p-rop-lem… " his voice was sweet, and he could barely pronounce yet his words and attitude wasn't so. Prem looked at the small boy, as if the boy called him the worst thing possible "Uncle", then he knelt down a bit to meet his eyes to show his anger accurately.
"My problem is this!!" said Prem and he pulled the mirror from the boy's hand and shined it on to his face.
"my… my mom is in that shop I I tell her and.. and…"
"Oooh oohh I'm so scared I'm shaking" said prem and then he smiled menacingly as if he was destroying his toughest adversary.
The boy made a defeated face a kin to a crying one and ran off calling for his mother.
"Oh run… run all you can I'll be watching you" and he laughed more. The boy ran a few more feet and turned, and danced saying,
"You can't ca-th me.. you can't ca-th me"
Prem put one foot forward acting as if he was going to run after him, then the boy again ran, but this time faster to the shop where his mother was at.
"Yeah yeah run to your mommy.. " Prem laughed.
Then Debo came out pretentiously asking,
"What happened prem? I don't know why these people have children if they can't take care of them properly"
"It's a small town madam.. His mother must be near by, he is just used to having fun with visitors ..I know the family, they take good care of him" said the owner who was a bit angry about the way debo spoke about his fellow people, about someone he was acquainted with. Debo glared at the shop owner who suddenly had grown himself a backbone, and waited for Prem to give her some moral support on the discussion.
Prem who was still laughing in his glory turned around to look at Debo, then without getting involved in her observation at all asked,
"Did you get everything you want then let's go" and he got in to the car and threw his cane in to the back seat. Debo then without a response, got into the car, and put on her seat belt ready to endure another dose of prem's high-speed driving.
To be contd…..
