I'm confident about the way I look on screen!'
Glamourous small screen actress Shweta Salve, now looks forward to her role as an anchor in Popkorn, on Zoom. The actress-cum-anchor admits to PREMA K, that anchoring is definitely more challenging

Does the fact that you are stepping into someone else's shoe worry you?
No, I'm pretty confident about the way I look and host! Mini Mathur has a different personality and style. Since Mini quit the show I was asked to step in. She did a wonderful job. It would've been a different thing if I were stepping into an actor's shoes. As an actor, people are so used to a particular character that there are comparisons when he or she is replaced. So there, I'd have to either meet with people's expectations or carve my own niche. That's a bit worrying. But as an anchor, I just have to be me.

Is this your first exposure to anchoring?
Few years back, I anchored a show on Channel [V] for a few months. I also anchored 'Good Morning Bollywood', for Sahara. I also host events and so anchoring is not something completely new to me.

What do you enjoy about anchoring?
The fact that it lets you be yourself. As an actor, one has to walk and talk, like someone else. An actor has to deliver his lines with emotions. Anchoring is also delivering lines and that's where I come into the picture. I have to make the lines interesting that people want to hear the latest news. It's not like I've to be a scheming bahu or vamp on screen. I've to bring my own style. It's like having a conversation with my audience.

What's more fun; acting or anchoring?
Both have their elements of fun, otherwise, I wouldn't be doing them. In acting, it's the thrill of performing and creating a new character whereas in anchoring it's the freedom that I enjoy, besides being myself.

But don't you agree that anchoring is more challenging as compared to acting?
It is! The anchor is the only person holding the show together whereas in acting; there are co-actors who help balance the scene with you. So anchoring definitely becomes more challenging as compared to acting, but that's the fun and thrill of it.

You seem to have done a lot of non-conventional shows - Kittie Party, Lipstick, to name a few. Has this been intentional?
It's not like I'm receptive to these shows and avoid conventional saas-bahu ones. I've done those too. Who doesn't want to become a household name? But the danger in doing these is that your fame is short-lived. I've always accepted any good show that's come my way. When one has an outgoing nature, people try to slot you into strong characters. So I guess that's the only reason why I've done quite a bit of these contemporary shows.

How about films?
I'm an actor and look at films as a part of my growth. If someone thinks that I have the potential and offers me something good, I'd love to do it.

Do you have hang-ups about approaching film producers or directors for work?
I'm not against it but I'm worried about meeting the wrong people in Bollywood since I don't really know much about this industry. I've put in a lot of hard work into the television industry and I'm sure that some people have seen my work. I'd prefer if someone like that approaches me otherwise I'm happy with television. I'm also a very shy person so cannot really approach people.

Don't you feel that television actors are said to be over-exposed and given a raw deal in films?
It's sad, but true. That also holds me back from approaching people. But I don't understand this logic that just because an actor has been seen on television before, the talent bit is discounted. In fact, a talented television actor should be given a larger platform to showcase his talent. Fortunately, for me, my television work has been spaced out so people don't feel I'm over-exposed. Although I'd love to do both commercial cinema and also have a glamorous image to be part of it, I'd love to do contemporary cinema. I feel that's more the kind of person I am in real life; very down to earth.
