Timeline: Karisma was engaged to Abhishek and the engagement was announced in October 2002 (on Amitabh Bachchan's the 60th birthday. Four months later in February 2003, they split up.

One of Bollywood's biggest unsolved mysteries remains the very public break up of Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor. Why was their engagement called off? I got my spies on the job and here's what they dug up!

While only close family members know the complete details of what actually transpired we can now tell you, right from a source close to the family, that Amar Singh was largely responsible for calling the wedding off. Just weeks before they were going to send out wedding invitations Amar Singh heard a rumor that Karisma was getting a little too friendly with Sahara head Subroto Roy and decided to investigate…

When Karishma's mother Babita Kapoor heard that Amar Singh had actually put a team of detectives on the job (to dig up Karisma's past) she obviously threw a fit and was furious. She then made a call to Jaya Bachchan complaining how could someone hire detectives to check up on her daughter's past and claiming that the Subroto Roy link up was utter rubbish.

This however upset Jaya a great deal and she got quite defensive about Amar Singh. Eventually this led to a total breakdown of communication between the two familes and Babita decided to cancel the wedding telling Karisma to stay away from the Bachchan family and not work with any of them in the future.

Yikes. High drama in high places.

I had heard that babita was behind their breakup because abhishek's movies were flopping one by one and she didn't want her superstar daughter to marry a flop actor like abhishek.
Anyways I feel karisma's loss was aishwarya's gain.Karisma would have been really happy had she married abhishek.I have heard he is really a nice and humble guy.

hmm this sounds much more realistic, but i cant believe Abhisek and karisma let some stranger break their seven year old relationship. Both should have stood up to their parents, i guess their love wasnt as strong.

I dunno...when I hear that Karisma's willing to stay married to Sanjay Kapur to still have access to his bank accounts, I find it easy to believe that Karisma and Babita asked for the pre-nup, and wanted AB Sr to leave everything to Abhishek...which upset the Bachchans.

i dont think karishma loved him,if she did she would hv not broken the relationship over some third person.

This break up nd patch up hurt me alot.

I dont think this is true. This is just Malini's brain shit. Never heard about Karisha and Subrto Roya affair.
