Hum Aapke hain Kaun...HAHK..Any Madhuri Dixit Deewana would vote for it.

The craze that i have seen for HAHK will never be witnessed again especially in todays multiplex jungle.

HAHK was released in 20-30 screens across India IIRC. In Mumbai they were showing it only in Liberty. Slowly they increased the screen count. 1 year and still you could find big queues outside Advance Booking windows.

It was time of VCRs and video cassettes and HAHK dared not to bring video cassette out. It worked for them. There were ambulance outside movie theatres to treat people for uneasiness. People just could not bare the thought of Renuka Shahne dying. No other movie has done this yet.

I heard about similar craze for Sholay but i was not born then. HAHK brought back family audience back to theaters.

Agreed! When the movie first came out, critics dismissed as saying it looked like someone's wedding movie. And, others said there were too many songs. It came at a time when people were getting tired of action movies and hence so many people loved the idea of a family movie. It came at a time when India started booming and hence families were getting richer. A new upper-middle class was born who had high-purchasing power but traditional values. It was first of its kind and hence people loved it. This movie never get out of fashion.
Its funny that you mention Sholay, I read somewehere that Sholay was given no major award at award shows and critics hated it. But, now even people from this generation knows its dialogues. Same might happen with HAHK
