I was just trying to get the information about the history of romance on Indian Television right from DD days.
Here is the gist ---

There had been many family dramas like Hum Log and Buniyaad with some romance in it, but they don't belong to the category of "just romance and romance" so the actors and characters from such serials are not considered how so ever popular they may be. For that matter there was romance in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayana too ...

The first serial which comes to mind is "Trishna" based on Jane Austin's "Pride and Prejudice".
The actor who played Mr. Darcy's role -- one Tarun Dhanarajgir became very popular -- those days there used to be only Doordarshan and Tarun Dharajgir became a heat throb of the nation -- specially all the girls and women. Among the other casts , there was Kitu Kidwani who was one of the younger sisters of Rekha (Elizabeth) and we all know that she really ruled the tv screen with getting roles like Svetalana in Shobha De's "Swabhiman" .

I think "Trishna" is available on youtube, try to download and see how Tarun Dhanrajgir portrayed the role of Mr. Darcy.

The next serial is "Kashish" again on DD. It was fully based on one M&B novel , with some Indian elements thrown in. It starred Sudesh Berry and Malvika Tiwary. Both the actors became very popular and they tried to cash in on the popularity by joining Bollywood too...
Then the next one is of course "Kahin to Hoga " ... Most of the people on this forum might have watched it too , I never watched it but had read about its popularity.
I am sure all of us will remember IPK for a long time and may not fall for any other serial in future as we will always compare it to IPK ...

What do you feel guys?

two more serials to be added ---- again on DD

Kshitij yeh nahin - A mature love story

and

Kashma - kash - Starring Kawanjit , again a typical M&B story.

Is this the origin for affinity for the letter "K" for some

and affinity for TDH M&B male character for others ?

i remember watching 'kashish' . I was a school going kid then.

But i never followed television or movies much. I started watching kasuati zindagi ki on and off but put off by the chewing gum treatment meted out to it.

Rang Badalti Odhani was good romantic serial that i followed. It was fun to watch the chemistry between the leads but IPKKND stood out the most.

unfortunately IPKKND happened very late to me around 4months back and ended too soon.

feel so bad about it.

I remember watching "Rang badalati audhani" . But unfortunately that is the only thing I remember about it -- watching it and not anything else ...
Whereas all of us will remember IPK "watching it" and "feeling it " ...

Yes IPK will be special...the chemistry between the leads even in the most mundane situations stood out...the scene need not be romantic...it could be sad, angry, comedy...anything...IPK also started of so well...with the layered characters...but ended with us sticking on just for the chemistry.,...
I did watch the PHs earlier show which is also Romantic...but felt nothing abt the chemistry...I know it was popular but I didnt feel anything and stopped watching...but IPK ki baat hi kuch aur thi...wish it wasnt ending😔

Shamil same pinch. I was in my 9th when Kashish was aired. Loved the story and loved sudesh berry portrayal of angry man. I think it was a pretty short serial only 13 episodes or that but it was a perfect M&B story. Then I saw Trishna too because we had "Pride and Prejudice" for the 10th English and our teacher got video tapes and played it for us. Oh good old school days. Somehow I feel we should go back to what we had during Doordharshan time - a serial with set number of episodes.

sarada, I feel the daily soaps shud end in around 100 episodes. That way the srory would remain crisp and more interesting unlike now adays where unnecessary tracks and characters are brought in to stretch a show like a chewing gum.
Pak shows follow our old dd format. They are weekly shows and end around 25-28 episodes.
