Dance is not just in the air, with the beginning of the Navratri season, but dance is also on air. After Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, on Monday Star One unveils the second season of its celebrity couple contest Nach Baliye 2. As the rehearsals reach a peak and with the launch episodes already canned, we match steps with some of the celebrity contestants on their moves and grooves.
Be it the self-confessed owner of "a triple left feet" (Hiten and Gauri), the "cute and youngest" (Sharad and Keerti) or the senior-most, "high on rhythm and expressions" (Ketki and Rasik Dave — everybody seems to be geared up to putting on their 'shoes and dance the blues' (with apologies to David Bowie). Here's how six out of the 10 couples are
HITEN TEJWANI Your USP: Gauri and I have good onscreen chemistry, courtesy our many successful onscreen pairings. That's what I think will see us through. Who is the better dancer? We both have a third left foot! Your dance idol: I don't have any dance idol in particular as I am not a great dancer, but I like watching Hrithik Roshan and Shahid Kapur onscreen. Favourite dance track: Any song with a lot of energy like Bole choodiyan bole kangna (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham) or Chaiyyan chaiyyan (Dil Se). Dance to me means… joy and fun. Your favourite dance venue: Home and alone.
GURDIP KOHLI Your USP: Arjun and I like to experiment a lot with everything in life. So our dances will bring in something new every time. Who is the better dancer? Both of us are equally bad and equally good, so in a way we complement each other well. Your dance idol: Madhuri Dixit. She is a great performer with the perfect smile, face and expressions. Favourite dance track: Mere haathon mein (
Chandni). As a child I used to dance a lot to this song. Dance to me means… fun! Your favourite dance venue: The dance floor, but definitely not the stage.
SHARAD KELKAR Your USP: Keerti and I have been told we are the contest's cutest jodi. Together, we hope to bring a lot of smiles. Who is the better dancer? We are more or less equal in our dancing abilities. Your dance idol? Hrithik Roshan. He's a rubber guy and has mind-blowing energy. Amongst international dancers, I like
Shakira. Favourite dance track: Khaike paan banaraswala (Don) – this is one song I have been listening and dancing to since I was three. Dance to me means… joy, fun, happiness. Your favourite dance venue: Anywhere where I have my wife for a partner. I also love dancing at weddings.
TANAAZ LAL Your USP: Bhaktyaar and I are going to bring in something new, every time we come on the stage. Our performances will have honesty and zero complacency. We are hardworkers, but we don't believe in eating more than we can chew. Who is the better dancer? Everyone knows its Bhaktyaar, since he's been dancing for a long time. Your dance idol: Madhuri Dixit, for her versatility and for introducing so many innovative dance steps into Bollywood. Favourite dance track: My current ring tone… Pyar karke pachtaya (Pyaar Ke Side Effects) Dance to me means… feeling fresh, excited and being myself. Your favourite dance venue? Anywhere where there is good music and a great dancing partner.
KETKI DAVE Your USP: Rasik and I may not be great dancers, but we will bring in some great expressions and emotions to our performances. Who is the better dancer? Neither of us is very good, but I have a sense of rhythm, while Rasik is great at expressions. However, I think I am the better dancer. Your dance idol: Sridevi for being able to turn even the most ordinary of steps into something seductive and sexy, and for never looking vulgar. Favourite dance track: O haseena zulfonwali (Teesri Manzil) with Helen, Shammi Kapoor and fun unlimited. Dance to me means… expressing your feelings through your body movements. Your favourite dance venue: I love going to discos, though i prefer to dance only in the company of friends.
MANAV GOHIL Your USP: Shweta's and my USP may not be the best of dance steps but our USP will be our chemistry. Who is the better dancer? I am told it's me! Your dance idol: Though I don't have any idol, I quite admire Prabhudeva. Favourite dance track: All the songs from Saturday Night Fever. Closer home, I like all the good old Amitabh Bachchan dance numbers like Jahan teri yeh nazar hai (Kaalia) and Dekha na, hai re (Bombay to Goa). Dance to me means… the purest form of body impulse, a great stressbuster. Your favourite dance venue: I am quite a sucker for good music and once that's a guarantee, I can dance anywhere — in the car, at home, parties, naturally and even in a queue.
