Part 1
It is said that you should marry a person who loves you, rather than a person whom you love. But whoever said this never gave a definition of love. He never explained what love indeed is. It is easy to say something, it is even easier to read about it that but it is enormously difficult when it comes to implementing that particular theory on your own life. This same dilemma was face by Geet Handa.
I know he loves me. I know that this was bound to happen. Then why am I still unable to accept this reality? Then why do I still feel that some miracle would happen and I would be able to escape from this marriage? Despite the fact, that I know he loves me, why am I unable to eradicate this dread and uncertainty that is killing me right now. Geet thought as she glanced at the person sitting right beside her, in the mandap, in front of the sacred fire. That person was Karan, her childhood friend and fiance. They were about to get married in a few minutes but still she was divided and unsure.
Karan loved her but still she was unable to reciprocate. She knew that he would always take care of her but still her heart was not at peace, still there was a fear that something was not right - like something essential was missing and yet she failed to pinpoint it.
It is said that love is everything and it is everywhere. But today she realized that sometimes love is not everything. Sometimes you do want a place where you can hide and be immune to it.
She failed to fathom the reason for her restlessness and her sweating palms. Her eyes were fixed on the sacred fire in front of her.
This flickering fire is called sacred but after all this is also a fire. Are there any different types of fire other than this sacred one? She thought. Least did she know that very soon she was going to be exposed to a different kind of a fire - a forbidden fire.
Geet had only one brother in her family. Her parents had died when she was young. She lived with her brother Brij and his wife Naina and their son.
Her betrothal with Karan was fixed years ago, when her parents were alive. Brij wanted her to settle and marry from a long time but she always refused. For some reasons, she couldn't make herself ready for the marriage.
But in the end, there was no other person in her life and she had no sane reason to refuse and hence she had to consent when Brij really pressurized her. She had tried numerous times to explain that she was not ready yet but every time she got only one answer that this anxiety was a result of wedding jitters and it would be over once she got married.
But even now her heart lurched and throbbed violently as she started breathing heavy due to an unknown fear.
Something bad is going to happen. She thought as Naina helped her to stand so that they could walk seven times around that sacred fire.
"Relax Geet," Naina whispered in her ear and Geet nodded. But maybe she was not wrong in her suspicion. Something bad was indeed going to happen today.
She had barely raised her foot to take one step when she heard chattering and murmurs among the people. She lifted her head and found a person advancing towards her.
For a moment, she forgot to breath. Baffled, she stepped back and knot on her dupata that was tying her up with Karan got loosened.
The person advancing towards her was clad in black and his eyes were spitting fire. He stood 6 feet tall and carried an undeniable air of virile masculinity and charisma. Although she hardly knew him but his demeanor only spoke of destruction and demolition. He was like a hurricane that would destroy her right there, right then. He was Maan Singh Khurana, number one business man of India, who was famous for being ruthless and cruel.
Strangely, everyone was quiet when he passed by them. Not even a single soul said anything or tried to stop him. He looked lethal and indestructible. Either everyone was intimidated by his personality or they knew that it was too dangerous to mess with Maan Singh Khurana. Despite the fact that more than hundred people were present there, she felt alone and exposed to him.
His guards were all dressed in black and were surrounding him. He didn't look around as his gaze was fixed on her - like he had already targeted her. And his stare only instilled a fear that was hard to suppress. His azure gaze searched her face with an easy seriousness so like him. Everyone was rooted in their places, not being able to say or move.
Without breaking the eye contact, he reached her. Geet took one more step and finally the knot that was tying her up with the Karan got opened. Her lips shivered before she opened her mouth to say something. She tried to look into his eyes but then instantly lowered her eyes when she saw so much hostility in those dark brown eyes.
Why is he here? What does he want? How does he know that I would be here? She was confused and unable to comprehend reason for his presence.
To her utter surprise, she felt ground slipping from under her feet. He swept her off from her feet and put her on his shoulder. Before walking, he snatched the dupata that had been tying her with Karan and threw it in the fire. He then turned around and started walking out of the hall, without saying anything, at a steady pace, sure of his intensions.
The guards were encircling them, holding their guns as he walked at perfect ease in that circle made by his guards. This was one and the only Maan Singh Khurana, a person to be feared.
No one dared to stop him. No one dared to question him. Even the groom kept standing at his place, least bothered about her bride who was being taken away.
"Where are you taking her? It's her wedding. Stop it. Leave her." Brij tried to intervene. But he couldn't even get near Maan since he was surrounded by the guards. He failed to reach even within the few feet radius around Maan. Maan kept on walking, aloof to his surroundings and struggling Brij who was trying to save his sister.
"Please, don't mess with him. His men won't hesitate to kill you. I think Geet also want this. That is why she has been trying her best to back out from this marriage. We should think wisely and settle this issue alone, since Geet is also willing." Naina stopped Brij, holding his arm so that he could act wisely.
On the other hand Maan just kept on walking. Within a minute, they were out of the hall. She had been abducted by him on her wedding day, in front of hundreds of people and no one even moved or even tried to protest.
"Leave me, I said leave me." She protested, hitting his back with her tiny fists but he dumped her on the car seat and came around to sit by her side. She was numb and shocked but the adrenaline coursed through her as she realized that her whole life was going to get spoiled after this.
"I won't go with you. What the hell," She yelled as he sat right beside her.
"Yeah, this is hell, and I am your devil. WELCOME TO THE HELL." He said in a deep tone as he gripped her wrists in his hands to pin her against the car seat. His voice was first threatening but then it turned low and deep.
"I am already burning, baby. Now it's your turn to burn in this forbidden fire."
