Iconic characters on television are dead
Smriti Irani
Years may have passed since they last appeared on screen, but some television characters are still fresh in public memory. They have become iconic and we remember them only by their screen names.

Here are some examples: Khopdi (Nukkad), Basesar, Nanhe and Chhutki (Hum Log) and Lajoji (Buniyaad) in the 80s'; Mihir and TulsiVirani ( Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi), Parvati (Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii) and Prerna and Rishabh Bajaj (Kasautii Zindagii Kay) in the recent past. "Even after a decade, people still call me Mihir Virani," says Amar Upadhyay, who played the role. But how many telly characters today have made such an impact? Well, not many.
Samir Soni may be a popular face, particularly after his appearance on Bigg Boss last season, but his character, Kunal, in Parichay Nayee Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka, hasn't established an identity even after a year. "These days, we have more drama-driven shows rather than character-driven ones. One fine day, there is a 20-year time leap, but even the clothes do not change. Anything happens. The mother looks younger than the daughter. The audience can't relate to such characters and forget their names," says Samir.
Agrees producer Rajan Shahi, "In most cases, the characters, their looks, acting style and costumes are similar. When you cannot differentiate, there is no recall value. Today, we don't discuss characters." Anas Rashid, who plays Sooraj in Diya Aur Baati Hum, says, "We are killing characters to generate TRPs. Iconic characters on TV are dead."
Producer Ekta Kapoor blames superficial characters for the problem. "My earlier shows like Kyunki... and Kahaani...had a lot of drama, but people still remembered the characters. These days, the characters are usually superficial. Also, the shows don't run very long," she says. "Today, there are many channels and shows. When they see Samir in Parichay..., they identify him with Bigg Boss. After Manav and Archana in Pavitra Rishta, none of Ekta's characters became popular," says Anas.
According to Rajan, characters played by actors who debut in landmark shows become popular as they don't carry any baggage. "Parul Chauhan and Sara Khan became popular as Ragini andSadhana, respectively, their characters' names in Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai. Mona Singh is identified as Jassi from Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, though she did many shows after that," he says. "It was easy for me to replace Mohnish Behl with Sharad Kelkar in Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, because the character of Dr Ashutosh was larger than the actor," he adds.
Larger-than-life characters are more memorable, says actress Sakshi Tanwar, who played Parvati in Kahaani... and currently plays Priya in Bade Achhe Laggte Hain. "The attention an actor got from a single character is divided now — the same actor can be seen in reality shows and various news-based programmes. This makes the audience get to know the actor as a person. This was not possible 10 years ago, when actors had to make public appearances in their screen avatars. Once, when I was playing Parvati, I went out in a T-shirt and jeans and people were shocked. But this time, I visited Lalbaug Ganpati as Sakshi and not Priya Kapoor (her character in Bade...)," says Sakshi.

LOL, haven't seen BB but heard that Samir was a nice guy there, knew the difference b/w right & wrong & stood up for what he believed in.

Would rather think of him in that light than the cardboard caricature he's been turned into here.

Funny , the Soap Queen is blaming the 'superficial' characters? Really , this from the person who conceptualizes them?😕 How can I blame a character for turning out a certain way when it's creator seems to be zonked out herself?🤢

for me Kunal Chopra is my iconic character no matter how much flaws he has in himself...SiNal the ideal couple...i feel anas is wrong though ekta characters are not iconic like tulsi...parvati...prerna...rishabh bajaj...but they are popular n we have one such figure call kunal chopra...we had abhay raichand from pyar ki yeh ek kahani...we have arjun punj from kitani mohabbhat hai...they did stole million hearts...i can list a number of characters who might not be iconic but popular due to their characters...

i don't watch BB...sorry i hate that disgusting show...but i know sammy when he was doing films...JJKN...i always use to like him but now when he is doing Kunal Chopra...he stole my heart completely...noone can give soul to kunal chopra rather than SS only...vice versa to siddhi chopra...the characters kunal chopra and siddhi chopra is only made for SaTi...

Are you kidding me Ekta?
You are blaming "superficial' characters? Wow lady, have some shame.
Never seen BB, heard Sameer sir gained wide recognition as most decent human being.
But Kunal Chopra sure is very well recognized character. That is the reason we are here yelling on top of our lungs when EK & her damn CVs mutilate him like crap.
Lady your earlier characters were annoying, no one comes close to KC. Now you are on path of destroying KC so people forget him. Too bad, my memory is damn good.

Serioulsy I have never seen BB with Samir. Heard a lot about him but still not a big fan of BB. Still have no desire to watch it.Seriously Ms Ekta, the only reason I see parichay is because of Samir as KC and coz for SINAL. If not for these two guys, do not want to even imagine the status of the show. Samir does lots of good work for his role as KC , and so does newcomer Keerti.Shows has lots of potential to run long, only if the producers, CVs are consistent , focus and conceptual future track plan with story without getting sidetracked , taking care of the leads by giving them importance.
Samir Soni and Keerti should be optimized well for their talents more productively, than wasting time on unwanted tracks and focusing too much on villains. Feel parichay can be explored more on emotional level between SINAL for they are the USP of the show. Also on KC and his professional heights.

I am surprised that BV was not mentioned in this article. It has been an iconic show of current times and the character Anandi (Avika Gor) is popular even today!!!!

Also I am not sure why the articles idolize BB. I never watched the show when SS participated in it even watch Parichay for SS... and I do not relate Sameer to BB

Isn't EK the one who is turning awesome real life genuine characters into superficial ones? What is she talking about.. as if it is not her fault! And I never saw BB and never knew SS before KC. I fell in love with the character KC and then came to know about SS. But KC has been butchered and sliced down to a mere carcass by none other than the queen of soaps!
