Part 2
Next morning at Priya's apartment
Priya stood in front of the mirror to check her appearance one last time before heading out the door. She had been unable to sleep the night before as expected. Her night had been spent reliving the past and fighting the demons that threatened to send her running instead of facing what was to come.
She touched the scar on her right cheek it, was time to take back what was taken from her by the devil himself. She had decided to not hide her scar like she usually would have when meeting new people for the first time, but this would be no ordinary meeting; the two of the four people she would meet today knew her. While one didn't know what had taken place on that day the other, along with Swati, had helped her get over the emotional trauma of accepting the incident.
Priya once again glanced in the mirror to make sure her dark slacks and teal green blouse were sufficient for first day of work in a new office. She opted for her comfortable boots to finish off the look.
Even before her face was scared she never cared about how she looked. Her average height made it easy for her to shop for clothes without any hassle. She wasn't model thin but just right for her five feet five inch height. She had always been active and led a healthy lifestyle so she had never had to diet like the other women.
She had never cared about what other people thought of her; her only aim in life had been to fulfill her father's dream of seeing her as a police officer. She had achieved her goal but in the process she lost much more. If only she had been able to voice her feelings things could have turned out differently.
"Put your doubts aside Priya, just remember that you are only here because of Sameer and that too for only short time. Once Sikandar is dealt with, you will return to your own world where there are no expectations or dreams.
Two week before
Priya was just finishing up the reports on her last case when her phone started ringing, she answered it while still focusing on the reports, "Priya Banerjee, how may I help you?"
"Priya you have a visitor," the receptionist in the outer office informed Priya.
Priya immediately forgot about the reports and frowned, wondering who would come to visit her. "Send them to my office," she told the receptionist and gathered the papers on her desk.
There was a knock on her door within few minutes, Priya called out for the person to enter as she put the file away.
"Hi Priya," her head snapped up when she heard the familiar voice of Sameer Rathore.
"Sameer, what are you doing here?" she said as she stood up to hug her best friend who she hadn't seen over a year.
Sameer looked at his friend closely and decided she was still the same Priya yet there was so much that is different about her. She no longer looked at the world with rose tinted glasses and he was not surprised at all considering what she has been through in her young life.
He waited for her to take her seat then sat down across from her, "I have come to see you specially," he hoped she agrees with his request.
"How can I help you Sameer?" Priya asked without hesitation.
"You can help me by transferring to my ETF office in Mumbai." He immediately responded to her question.
Priya frowned and wondered why Sameer was asking her instead of having his bosses request her bosses for her transfers.
"There is something you should know first and you should also know my reason for asking you to move," he said before she could ask.
Priya was getting an uneasy feeling about Sameer's request, "I am listening," she said then waited for him to continue.
Sameer took a deep breath, "Arjun is also part of my team," he held up his hand when she immediately shook her head no. "Hear me out first."
Sameer clasped his hands in front of him and leaned forward, "Three months ago one of my officers died while on a case, her name was Riya Mukerjee." He realized Priya was already beginning to see the significance of the name.
"Arjun joined our team six months ago after he was requested to help on a human trafficking case. At first I was not sure that it was a good idea, the Arjun that we knew was no more, this Arjun was on a self-destructive path and I did not want to be there when he finally succeeded in destroying himself. I couldn't see my friend lose everything he worked so hard for because he couldn't control his temper anymore." Rathore felt ashamed at turning his back on his best friend when he needed him the most but at the time he couldn't bring himself to destroy his friend's sanity.
Priya curled her fingers in her palms to keep from telling Sameer to stop for her own sense of self preservation but at the same time she wanted to hear more about him to know how he is doing.
"Anyway after a while I started to see him mellowing; he wasn't the old Arjun we knew yet but I saw that Riya was having an influence on him. I started to relax and thought Arjun just needed someone to ignore the invisible no trespassing sign he wore and Riya was breaching through every one of his barriers. I didn't realize how close she had actually gotten to him until the day she died." On that day Sameer had seen a glimpse of his old friend.
"Has he gone back to being rude, arrogant and I hate the whole world mode again?" Priya asked.
"Worse, he has withdrawn completely; he doesn't say anything but Riya's death has affected him much deeper than he is showing. When he is not working on one case or another he is constantly searching for Sikandar and I am afraid if something isn't done he is going to destroy himself before Sikandar is even found." Sameer finally voiced his fears.
"Sameer my joining your team could send him over the edge." Priya thought this could end up harming him more than helping him.
"I know, but I have discussed this with our boss and he and I both think it is time for Arjun to face the truth about his past." Sameer said without taking his eyes off of Priya.
Priya shook her head adamantly and stood up in agitation, "no Sameer, it will destroy him. You can't do that to him."
"We have run out of options Priya, you always knew that this day would come sooner or later." Sameer tried to reason with her.
"Why does it have to come at all Sameer? Let him have his illusions and take revenge for his wife so he could move on with his life." Priya shouted.
"Priya just think for a moment, what if Sikandar is the one to tell him when Arjun catches up with him? How do you think he will handle being told the truth by the very person he wants to kill? He will be devastated to realize that his friends had hidden such a big truth from him." Sameer's spoke quietly.
"In other words we are screwed one way or another." Priya said as she sat back down in her chair and placed her head in her hands.
"Priya I know that this will be much harder on you than any of us-." Sameer trailed off when he saw the pain in Priya's eyes at the reminder of what all she had lost for her love.
Priya sat up straighter and sighed. "So you want me to join your team and basically get him prepared to face some harsh truths." She concluded as she tapped her pen against her palm.
"Well I need a good research specialist, come forensic expert with background in criminal profiling too." Sameer said.
Priya couldn't help but smile at Rathore, for him duty to his country always comes first but his sense of fairness did not allow him to take advantage of people either. He knew what he was asking of her but at the same time he also realized that if he didn't do something about Arjun now it could be too late later.
Present
Priya paid the taxi driver and made her way to the ETF building. She had thought a lot in the two weeks she had asked Sameer to give her to decide what needs to be done. She had also contacted some key people to get the information she needed before deciding on what to do. In the end what she had found out left her with no choice but to join the ETF team in Mumbai.
She made her way up to the top floor and waited for someone to buzz her in but to her surprise Sameer opened the door and greeted her. "Priya come on in; no one else is here yet so that will give me time to give you the tour of the place and catch you up on our current case."
Priya was glad for the small reprieve and followed Sameer to his office. "This is really nice Sameer."
Sameer looked around his office and shrugged, "I suppose it is, I never cared one way or another."
Priya grinned inwardly, she was glad the success hasn't changed her friend at all.
"Are you all set with your new place?" He asked next.
"Yeah I am." She replied quietly.
One hour later
Arjun was in his usual seat in the conference room, sipping his cutting chai as he went over the background information that Shree had gathered the night before on the two murdered victims when he heard Rathore talking to someone as he walked into the conference room.
Arjun's hand clenched on the glass that he was holding when he heard the familiar feminine voice. "It can't be," he thought. There is no way that Rathore would have recruited the one person he knew Arjun would refuse to work with. He slowly turned toward the duo and came face to face with the person he hoped he would never see again in this lifetime.
He clenched his jaw when he saw the familiar heart shaped face, long dark hair and the hazel eyes of the girl who he thought would never do anything to hurt anyone, most especially him. "What the hell is she doing here Rathore?" he asked angrily making Shree and Chottu look up in surprise.
*~+~*
Okay as most of you may have guessed that Priya's presence in Arjun's life is going to trigger some memories that he has blocked from his mind due to what happened with his wife. We will have to wait and see how he deals with things as he remembers certain things.
First of all I'm sorry sorry sorry for the late edit
