'Fame Gurukul' (Sony) is back on SAB with a whole new look and a new name to boot. Titled 'FameX', this show promises to be modern and spunky.

Announcing this initiative, the senior VP and business head of SAB channel Vikas Bahl says "A large part of this show will have reality based content. We will focus on honing the talent rather than changing it over a period of time. It will be more cutting edge than the earlier show."

The channel has been airing shows like 'Left Right Left' and 'Twinkle Beauty Parlour' with a view to attract younger audiences. "'FameX' is another show that will bring in younger viewers to the show. The 'X' in 'FameX' stands for the potent X factor that is so talked about in India nowadays. We will be looking for this aspect in participants in their performances, singing talent and in every little trait of theirs that makes them connect with the viewers," says Vikas.

The channel will be conducting auditions across select Indian cities from October 10 and will span over a period of three weeks.

The judges, principal and hosts have yet to be finalised for the show. The show is expected to go on air in the second week of November.

Vikas concludes by saying, "The timing of the show is perfect. The winner will sing a song for the Indian cricket team and it will aired during the World Cup.

There are several reasons to move FG now named Fx to SAB. Sony has seen it's ratings drop significantly for reality based shows. It's show Deal ya No Deal flopped. Indian Idol 2 had disappointing ratings and Fame Gurukul was vastly criticized by the critics and the ratings were not what Sony had hoped (they had paid a very large rights fee to the Spanish producers of the original series).

SAB is Sony's junior station with a niche audience. You can equate it to something like MTV2 (junior station to MTV). It caters to a very specific demographics with a very narrow focus. In this case, with FameX they are targeting the teen audience i.e. school and first year college students. I think this is a smart move. Their research showed them that Fame Gurukul was mostly followed by this crowd. The show did not have a universal appeal thus now they are revamping the show to focus exclusively to this crowd (previously they had attempted to cater to a wider audience).

If they are able to rope-in Himesh Reshamiya (as speculated) then I think the show will do quite well. Himesh is extremely popular amongst the youth today and he will not mince words during the show. You will see some real fireworks with his criticisms and analysis of performances. Additionally, Himesh has that X factor that is the "core" of this show. He knows what the audience will be looking for and he'll help the contestants focus on it.

Don't look for great singers to come out of this show. The show will try to focus on "performers" with significant emphasis on look, stage presence and audience interaction. The faculty chosen will also reflect these goals.

With it's specific focus I think the show will do well. It will also help SAB raise it's awareness and profile. This makes it a win win situation for both SAB and the targeted audience.
