Subadra and Arnav were standing feet apart, watching each other closely, waiting for the other to speak. The tension level was high in the empty room. It was so thick, it couldn't be cut with a knife. Unspoken conflicts stayed on both persons' minds, not wanting to start, but knowing they had to resolve everything before the wedding happened. Both stubborn as hell, both wanting to protect their families, both willing to do anything to keep their families happy, but both having opposite ideas.
"Anjali betiya needs her husband. She will be having her baby any day now, and damadji is nowhere to be found. A woman needs her husband with her at this point in time." Subadra finally said, starting with the most important issue to her.
"No Dadi. That man is no longer the damad of this family. And he will never come back to this house." Armav retorted, not willing to let the two women he cares about most be hurt again.
"He will always be a part of this parivaar. He is Anjali's husband and my great-grandchild's father. You can't change that, Arnav. I will bring Anjali her husband back."
"No Dadi. I will not allow that man to hurt Di or Khushi again! He has caused this family enough pain. No more! If you bring that man back, you can forget you ever had a grandson." Arnav said, trying to control his anger.
Nani, who had been in the room, gasped. "Chote, what are you saying?! Yes Sumi is wrong, but you can't say that. Sumi, Chote is right in not letting Shyam back in this house, please don't do this to Anjali betiya. She went through so much after that whole situation and she is finally her old self again." she tried to reason.
"Khushi? So she is the reason you threw damadji out? Because of that characterless girl? Because of her, my granddaughter lost her husband. Again, you are blaming the innocent and saving the guilty. Arnav you have to stop listening to your heart." Arnav listened as he heard his grandmother use the same words she had once spoken about his parents and he felt pain.
"ENOUGH DADI! I was right then, and I'm right now. You want to know what happened? I will tell you everything." he yelled.
"Chote, don't..." Nani started in an attempt to stop him from saying anything.
"No, Nani. She is going to bring that man back to our lives and ruin it. I'm not going to let her mistake ruin this family's happiness again." he said to Nani. He then turned to Dadi and just as he was going to start, she interrupted him.
"It doesn't matter what you tell me, Arnav. I'm bringing back damadji."
"Stop calling him that. He isn't this family's son-in-law anymore. What type of damad lives off his brother-in-law, says he loves his wife and then tries to get married to another woman? What type of man, despite knowing how much a woman doesn't like him, still tried to get close to her, tries to force himself upon her? What type of man tries to get close to his brother-in-law's wife? What type of man tries to kill his wife and brother-in-law? What type..." he ranted and stopped when he felt a hand in his shoulder. He froze when he heard the voice.
"Arnavji, stop."
Everybody looked towards the owner of the voice in shock.
"You! What are you doing? Don't you know better than evesdropping on private conversations?!" Dadi yelled at her.
"Dadi, mujhe maaf karna, liken, what you are saying is wrong. Shyam cannot come back." Khushi responded. "Arnavji, please don't bring up the past, but no matter what, Shyam can't come back." she said to her husband.
Arnav put his arm around his wife, "Dadi, Khushi is my wife, she can go anywhere she wants, she can talk whenever she wants. And don't worry, Jaan. Shyam is not coming back." he replied.
"Magar kyun?! What did he do that you kicked him out of the house? How could he hurt Anjali? He loves her. He would never hurt her." Dadi replied.
"Dadi, why won't you understand?! He never loved Di! He only loved her wealth. He was cheating on Di! He was hitting on other women. He was running after other women. He kidnapped me for weeks and tried to kill me. If Khushi hadn't been there, I wouldn't be here! And neither would you. He was planning on taking all my wealth and running, you all would be homeless and penniless! He tried to get Khushi. He tried to force himself on her. He forcefully engaged her. ALL WHILE HE WAS MARRIED TO MY DI!" he screamed. He couldn't hold it in anymore. He ignored Khushi trying to stop him, he ignored his Nani's attempts to interrupt him. He was not going to stop. He was going to make sure his Dadi knew exactly what kind of son-in-law that man was.
Dadi gasped in surprise at Arnav's words. Nani looked on in horror as her grandson retold the doings of their son-in-law. Khushi looked at her husband with pain in her eyes as she thought about all the past pain.
"If you still want to bring that man back into our lives, don't bother. Because you won't be able to enter this house if you leave for him." he said in his deadly ASR voice.
"Chote" Nani cried at the same time Khushi said his name, "Arnavji."
"No. Nani, Khushi, don't stop me. She came here after 14 years, not once calling how we are, not once accepting to come out the many times I visited her and she expects us to treat her the same way, allowing her to do whatever she wants in my house? Allowing her to hurt us and leave us again like she did all those years ago? No! Dadi, this isn't Sheesh Mahal, this isn't the Maalik Mansion that you have complete control over coming and going out of our lives. You can either stay here and support Di through this time or you can go after Shyam and will never come back here." he said and took Khushi's hand as they left the room.
Arnav took Khushi to their room and closed the door, stayed with his back towards Khushi, not wanting to turn around. Not wanting Khushi to see his tears, his weakness. Just as the first tear fell, he felt a soft hand on his shoulder. He stiffened, trying to stop the tears, trying to put his ASR mask on, but failed miserably. Khushi turned him around and saw the real him. Not the real 28 year old Arnav, but the 14 year old boy who lost the most important person in his life.
Arnav always stayed as that 14 year old boy in some ways. Once he got close to one person, hell would freeze before he let that person go. He would die if something happened to the persons he loved. And that was exactly what happened the day his mother die. He felt himself freeze. He felt that same way again. With Khushi. She couldn't leave him now. His life depended on it. He wouldn't be able to survive a second loss.
Khushi saw a tear fall. She couldn't bear him feeling this way. She threw herself on him, hugging him, letting her scent, her warmth calm him. She held her breath, waiting for the feeling of his arms around her. Finally she felt the familiar presence of his arms go around her waist and pull her tightly to him. She heard him sigh as she felt wisp of air on her neck. She felt him put his head in the cook of her neck.
Arnav didn't even realize when he put his arms around Khushi and pulled her tightly against himself. He didn't notice the instant relief he felt that being in her arms brought. He leaned in and put his head on her neck, feeling the pulse in her neck, letting her fragrance intoxicate him. With Khushi hearing all that, he had been afraid that she would leave too, just like his mother left them. But the instant he gave himself up into the hug, he felt the relief take him over. With such a small act, it spoke volumes. In this one hug? Arnav got his answer. Khushi would never leave him. She was his forever and she would stick by his side forever.
Dadi watched as her grandson took his wife and left, she watched as Devyani, her childhood friend, leave, his words replaying over and over in her mind. She realized then, that she had lost the respect that Arnav once had for her. That by going away after her son and daughter-in-law's deaths had driven Arnav farther away than Anjali. She had to make everything right. She had to show Arnav that she was still the same Dadi that used to always shower him with gifts, the same Dadi that loved him. She had to bring back the happiness of the family. And there was only one answer to that. She was going to give Anjali her life, her happiness back.
After thinking everything through, she walked out the door and little did she know, out of their lives. She called and told the person on the other end where they would be meeting. Half an hour later, she had just gotten out of a rickshaw and was walking purposely towards the meeting place. When she arrived, she sat on a bench, waiting.
"Dadiji...?" she heard a familiar voice call her name. She turned around and smiled. "Damadji, I knew you would come. Thank you. But we have to talk." she said.
"Of course, Dadi. How could I refuse you?" he said with a smile and he sat down.
"Damdji, I know what they are saying against you. I know you would never do anything like that. You love Anjali too much to hurt her and go after another woman. It's all that Khushi. She is angry that you and Anjali live with Arnav." she said. "I don't care what they say, I am bringing you back. You and Anjali need to be together, she needs you at this time. You need to be with your wife." she said.
"Dadi, please don't say anything against Khushiji. You are wrong. Arnav was right about me. But I don't care about that house anymore. I just want Khushiji." he said. He watched as dadi's face changed from confusion to shock.
"Damadji, what are you saying? You just said Khushi. You mean Anjali, don't you? And you don't mean you don't care anymore. Come with me. I will take you home. They will listen to me." she tried.
"Dadi, I didn't make any mistake. Arnav was right. I'm in love with Khushiji. I don't love Anjali. And the baby, I don't care about it either. I just want two things. Arnav's money and Khushiji. I would have gotten both, but you ruined everything. You let the wedding happen and that ruined everything!" he screamed, the true Shyam coming out. He stood up and took something metal out. "Dadi, I only brought you back for me. So I could go through with my plan. But, now... I don't need you anymore. And when I don't need someone anymore, I get rid of them." he smiled.
Nani saw the item in his hand and stood up. "Damadji? What is this? You can't do this!" she said.
"I can and I will" he said as he watched her face drain from color. He indicated with a nod from his head that she should run. And right then, Shyam watched the elderly lady run as fast she could away from this man. He laughed quietly to himself and started walking towards her. He watched in amusement as she made her way to a small patch of trees. There was no way she would get away from him, there was a railroad track and the train would be coming in a bit.
He followed her to the trees and shot off one bullet, hitting her in the arm. He heard her cry out in pain, but continue running. 'She has will.' he thought to himself. When he looked up, he noticed she was nowhere to be found. He cursed himself and started looking around. After a couple minutes, he gave up and left. He knew she wouldn't say anything, that he didn't have to worry about her.
Subadra felt a pang in her arm as she ran away. She cried in pain as she was jerked forward from the force. She looked over her shoulder to see Shyam walking towards her when she lost her footing and feel in a hole. She landed on her back and felt something moving under her. She reached under her and pulled something cool out. When she saw what it was, she threw it against the wall. She looked around to see the hole filled with many snakes. Just as she was about to scream, she heard a soft rustling of feet and knew that Shyam must be looking for her. She covered her mouth and waited for the footsteps to go away.
Once she knew he was gone, she started moving around trying to find a way out. She took out the small cell phone she had kept tucked in her sari and called Arnav and told him what happened. Not knowing, by moving, she was irritating the snakes. One of them started slithering towards her as she struggled around. Slowly, other snakes started moving towards her. Just as she sloped behind her, she felt a sharp stinging pain shoot through her foot and up her leg. She screamed as she felt a second bite. She fell to the ground as snakes surrounded her and a third one bit her on her upper leg and a fourth one on her arm. Suddenly she felt someone pull her up.
She looked up at the two young-looking men and sighed in relief. She had been so afraid that it was going to Shyam, back to finish her. But it wasn't.
"Hai baghwan! Thank god it's you. Not someone else. Can u help me? I've been shot and bitten. I need help." she started, holding on to them, walking out of the woods. When they stopped and their lack of reply, she turned around towards them. "I need to go to the police, can you please help me?" She asked.
When she mentioned the police, the men knew they couldn't. And since she was shot, the police would want to question them. They couldn't allow her to go to the police station. One of the men then spoke up, "We are sorry, but we can't let you go to the police station."
Subadra gasped, "What do you mean? I have to tell the police about him. I have to tell my grandson. He will be here. I don't care if you are going with me, I'm going no matter what." She said determinedly. As she started walking backwards. One of the men grabbed her and pulled her forward while she started struggling. The other man soon joined in and when she wouldn't slapped her. He then took a knife out from his shirt and stabbed her in the stomach over and over. Finally the first man pried his friend off her and both ran away.
Subadra was now bleeding from his shoulder and her stomach. She had forgotten about her shoulder. She staggered backwards a little before she realized where she was. On the train tracks. And she soon saw the headlights and heard the horn. She was frozen to the spot as she saw the train get closer. And suddenly she felt a sudden pain hit her chest, and she was thrown backwards. Seconds later, the train sped across on a bump and nothing was seen.
Arnav saw Shyam walking away as he put his gun away. Arnav started towards him and grabbed him by the collar. He brought his head down on the car repeatedly. He then brought him up and started punching him and threw him on the ground. He kicked him in the stomach and punched his face, making the man on the ground lose consciousness. He got up and wiped his hands, feeling better that finally he was able to give that bas***d what he deserved. He took out his phone and dialed the police inspector.
Within minutes, the police were there. They surrounded Shyam and picked him, carrying him to the police car as the inspector talked to him. Arnav told him how Shyam had forced Khushi into an engagement, how Shyam had almost killed her father, extorting money from his sister, kidnapping him, almost killing him, kidnapping Khushi, and causing Anjali to have a miscarriage, killing their child.
"Well, Mr. Raizada, don't worry about him. He won't be getting out anytime soon. It will be a long time before he is even offered bail. I will personally ensure he is given a life sentence at the least." the inspector said and left.
Arnav walked to his car and sighed in relief. He got in and drove home, the whole time thinking about Shyam. He couldn't believe it was actually over. He arrived at home a half an hour later and ran to his room. He opened the door and saw Khushi standing at the French doors, facing the pool, her back to him. He slowly made his way across in 5 steps until he was right behind her. He wrapped his arms around her and rested his head in the crook of her neck, sighing deeply.
"Arnavji, you are back?!" she said in surprise. She looked down at his hands and saw them red in blood. She turned around and saw blood smears on his face. She quickly took his hands from around her waist and held them in her hands, examining them. They had open wounds on the knuckles, and were covered in blood. She took his face in her hands as she asked what happened. Arnav then told her everything and how he had found his grandma talking to Shyam. How he left before she did and came back later and found Shyam alone. How he beat the bas***d into unconsciousness and the police took him away. He told her how he didn't find his grandma and figured she had gone to the ashram again. But he didn't care, he told her, they didn't need her presence here to ruin things again.
Khushi stayed quiet until Arnav was finished. When he finished, she threw herself into his arms, offering the comfort she knew he needed, but would never ask for. She then got up and headed for the bathroom when she felt Arnav grab her hand.
"Please, just let me..." he said. Khushi sat back down and held him, understanding what this meant. She sat there, with Arnav in her arms for a change, the silent understanding passing between them. She let him shed his silent tears, the tears that he hadn't been able to she'd for years. The tears that would finally let him start his life over. Over with new memories and free of his past burdens.
