So, I read a post on the forum today, and I felt the need to add my own two cents about the show. I consistently watch four soaps. Out of these four, Madhubala is probably my favorite. The first episode I watched was the episode in which RK forces Madhu to marry him. I'm not going to lie... I was not immediately hooked. It took me a few weeks to really get hooked on the show, but when I did...I couldn't quite explain exactly why I liked it so much. It felt like the show just kind of creeped up on me. But, after reading this other post, I think I can finally explain it. Madhubala is explosive; explosive in terms of characterization, plot lines, romance, everything. I love that Madhu isn't the typical Indian bahu. She hates her husband... or at least used to hate... and she lets it be known to the world that she isn't fond of him. She challenges him and she is the perfect person to do so because she stands her ground. She won't let RK dictate her life. This show is NOTHING like the typical Indian soap and I think that this is the exact reason that this show makes such waves. I love that RK is such a broken, twisted character. And, I love that Madhu is portrayed as the only person to challenge this disposition. They are perfect for each other, but they are not individually perfect. RK is, obviously, a rude, arrogant man who resorts to any tactic to get what he wants, no matter how low that tactic might be. Madhu, on the other hand, is also not perfect. Sure she comes pretty damn close to perfection, but she still resorts to off-handed ways of proving her point and challenging her husband. She blackmailed him with those pictures just to get her way and she takes low blows at RK when she feels it is her place to do so. No other bahu on television...or at least only a few of them... act in this way. I love how neither character is idealized as the perfect bahu or husband or wife or whatever. And, I love love love the bittersweet, love-hate relationship between Madhu and RK. I love that you never know in any given moment whether they hate each other or love each other. And, I love that underneath all their anger and hate lies this need to take care of each other. But, most of all... I love how Vivian and Drashti portray the characters. I don't think I could come up with any two actors that I would rather see in place of Vivian and Drashti on this show. Their chemistry and their acting is mindblowing!
