His eyes opened to sunlight n her face. Fleetingly, he let himself delve upon the perfection of it all then quickly sprang out of the reverie. What it seemed from outside was just the opposite of was it actually was. He had dreamed of the situation many times, they both married n he waking up to her face every morning in a world full of love n affection. His eyes brimmed with tears for which he lamely blamed the sun casting brightness over him but his heart knew the real reason.
He looked at Geet who was sleeping beside him clutching him as if her life depended on it. Whisking a strand of hair from her face n tucking it back behind her ear, he thought about her words from last night... it didn't made sense though, no matter how much he tried to understand they remained an unsolved puzzle. He thought if the letter she had written contained the truth n not just an excuse to get rid of him. But then she should have held on tight on him just like she was doing in her sleep, didn't she trusted him a tid-bit. He would have fought for both of them against whole world even god only if once she would have a asked him or gave him chance.
No she didn't mean any of the words she wrote; it was a lie, a way to blame everything on him. She left him that was the fact, truth in its purest form. The women in his life only betrayed him, leaving him alone. His mother, his love n the women he previously married, but he was no fool anymore. He knew the face of veracity now; nobody could hurt nor could affect him. He didn't give a damn.
Maan grabbed Geet's hand that was lying over him; strangely she winced at the contact. He held it softly this time n rolled the sleeve up to find the reason of the pain; scratches of every size greeted him n though there was no blood he knew they were fresh. It pained him to even imagine that this was because he shouted on her yesterday but what kind of behaviour was this, was she trying to torture or blackmail him. He turned the hand gently to examine the damage, the next thing amazed him even more... from behind the gashes he could see the pallid scars. Thin lines horizontal on her wrists, healed yet dreadful to sight, did she cut her wrist in suicide attempt? Or was it some sort of creepy way of having fun?
Slowly coming out of her hold he walked to the cupboard n brought a soframycin tube. With extreme care, he applied the cream over her little gashes, a part of him didn't wanted her to feel the pain more while another-the logical one-didn't wanted her to wake up n assume he cared, he was doing it... out of humanity. Yes that was it, a reasonable enough excuse to pacify himself.
Next he called the doctor the things he saw her going through were no way normal.
The doctor after check up gave her a injection n told that she was very weak, it looked as if she had not eaten properly for like ages. Also she showed symptoms of depression about which he needed to see her file from the previous doctor. He was sure she would have consulted some psychiatrist because her depression apparently was not in early stage.
Maan was not understanding anything she behaved so bizarre first n now she was not eating properly n she was a depression patient. Geet the girl who could evaporate other's tension n worry with her single smile was now in this condition. What could have happened to her? The more he knew the more he seemed ignorant, the more he tried to understand the more he became puzzled.
A small moan from Geet n Maan was on the bed to check if she felt good.
Her eyes opened n surprisingly her head didn't feel heavy; even there was no morning sickness. To see the time she turned her head towards the bigger surprise that awaited her. Maan sitting beside looked... worried, for her? Soon the worry disappeared from his face n she credited her sleepy mind for the imagination. Still what he was doing there? She vaguely remembered the all so familiar dream then all the screaming n madness. Was Maan there when it happened? Did he know she was not well, that she was slowly going insane? Or did he already think that she had lost her sanity?
A doctor came for check up? Your medicines are there. He signalled towards the side table.
I already have my medicines with me. Geet said absently. So much she wanted to clear her doubts but stayed mum she didn't wanted her fears n assumptions to turn into reality.
If Geet had questions Maan also had several queries in his mind though unlike Geet he was determined to reach the end. He would confront her, he decided but not now. Not because she was unwell but because he himself needed time, his mind concluded.
Dadimaa returned at afternoon n Maan told her about Geet, of course skipping the major details n telling just about her fever n doctor's information about her being a depression patient. Dadimaa when called Rajendra, he confirmed the news but he also told she was doing fine lately. With proper treatment n meds she nearly came out of it, it had been almost a year she showed some depression traits.
Dadimaa took the number of Geet's psychiatrist n assured Rajendra there was no need to worry. She gave the number to Maan n told him everything to which he just nodded contradicting his inner conflicts. Dadimaa herself was a bit bothered but was also happy that Maan was showing at least some concern.
Later Jia came to Geet's room; she was in balcony n she stayed there hiding from her.
Mommy!! Let's go we will do drawing. She said skipping into the room excited to use the new crayons with her mother. After getting no response she again called.
Mommy... Thinking Geet was not there, Jia left the room dragging the stuffed puppy in hand with her. It seems mommy is not here. I tink we should ask Nan, come fuffy.
Since Geet was better n also didn't vomited the whole day, she decided to prepare dinner.
Rarely did it happen that all were at home n had dinner together, today was the day.
Bua you will watch movie with me tonight? Jia asked pleadingly.
No Bua, Jia. Annie chided lightly. I told you call me Annie. Which movie you want to see?
Princess wali. Jia said with a smug smile while Annie n Dadimaa rolled their eyes breaking into a smile themselves.
Geet after serving everyone sat on the chair n started eating. Except for the occasional chatter of Jia everyone ate silently.
Maan observed Geet intently, how she was eating slowly as if just for formality, to accompany everyone. Every time she put a tiny morsel in her mouth, he clenched the spoon tighter.
Geet felt eyes on her to be more precise Maan's eyes on her n she felt suffocated. She didn't spoke to Jia the whole day even at the dinner table whenever she spoke to her she just smiled keeping her eyes downcast. But still Maan's gaze made her nervous n conscious, it was as if he was making sure she behaved herself, as if she was a serious criminal under strict surveillance.
With Annie, Geet also left for her room relieved to no limits.
Everyone had already gone to their respective rooms while Jia was in Aniee's room to watch movie. A thousand thoughts crossed his mind while he climbed the stairs with the food plate in hand.
Geet was sitting on her bed looking at the patterns on bed sheet with utmost concentration, when Maan entered her room she didn't even raised her head. He stood there for complete 5 minutes looking at her but she not once noticed his presence.
Ahem. He cleared his throat n only then Geet realised he was there with a plate in hand.
Ji aapko kuch chahiye. She asked confused n nervous not knowing what his intentions were.
He kept the plate before her n stood crossing his arms. Your dinner. He said with attitude n Geet was more confused now.
Mai kha chuki hu. She said making him angry. Why was she lying, she ate almost nothing... couldn't she just do what he said.
Maine dekha tumne kitna khaya. Maan said through gritted teeth. Chup chap khana kha lo.
Now he had started bossing her even over food, why he even cared? The thing was, she didn't want to eat n so she wouldn't. He could order her for other things but her own self remained hers n she won't listen to his each n every word. I don't want to eat.
It angered Maan how she defied him, it was not like she would do him any good by eating, it was for own self. Being so stubborn was her childhood habit then at least something from her matched to his toy girl. He quickly shoved these thoughts at the back of his mind.
I am asking you to eat. She pretended not hearing n turned her head to the opposite side.
Now his anger was on the top. He sat before her took a morsel n grabbed her cheek turning her face towards him. Look at yourself Geet. I don't want Rajendra uncle n others to think that we are mistreating you or something.
Tears came to her eyes hearing those harsh words; still she didn't eat from his hand. Pushing it away she started eating by herself. He stayed there while she finished her food, making every bite for her hard to swallow. She drank her tears n it pierced him that she was crying because he was there.
Finished with the damn food she kept the plate aside n drank water. Khana khatam ho gaya ab aap please jaiye.
It's my house n I will decide when to come n when to leave. Yeah how could she expect some mercy from him. She was on verge of crying but she didn't want him to see her like that.
How did you get that? Maan said eyeing the scratch on her palm.
I fe...ll in the... garden. She meekly answered.
He shifted closer n pushed her sleeves up, his brief touch giving her shivers. N these? Now she didn't have an answer. What should she say... she wanted more because enjoyed the first one. Again why she had to answer him, it was her body n her hands to scream out loud. Not your concern. She snapped pulling back to avoid the close proximity though her back hit the head board n it didn't allow her much space.
Maan temper was rising each second; she was not telling him... hiding from him n denying him time n again.
Where did you stay while I was in London? He shot the question n she closed her. Why so suddenly he was all interested in her? Okay he called the doctor n knew she was sick but she didn't need his sympathy. She was enough to take care of herself n if he was doing to mock her, she wouldn't give him that satisfaction.
I was with Rajendra Uncle. He knew she would lie.
Don't lie. I know you were not there. He informed looking into her eyes. The way he towered over her, made her squirm like a weak mouse desperately trying to hide from the scary lion, who knew she wasn't enough to satisfy his hunger but was just in mood of some amusement.
So what if I was not there. Though intimidated Geet retorted, her lashes making a veil upon her eyes, she didn't dare look at him knowing he would read her like an open book.
I am asking, where were you? He asked heavily.
I am not going to tell you. That was it he grabbed her hair pushing her closer to him. Her lips parted while she looked into his furious eyes. He clutched her hair tighter n she held his hand on her head. His eyes travelled to her lips which were pulled apart white teeth peeking from inside. His throat went dry; unable to stop, his eyes went lower to her breasts that were flattened against his chest. Geet followed his eyes as they travelled over her freely but didn't know if what she was thinking was true. He looked into her eyes again; they were filled with confusion, pain, fear n the hurtful denial.
Toh tum mujhe nai bataogi?
Nai. Her eyes showed her inner resolution n Maan wanted to break that shell.
Don't test my patience Geet. He grumbled his mind on the edge.
She tightened her jaw n tried to jerk her head away from his grip. But instead Maan slammed his lips over hers. The moment their lips met he felt electrocuted instantly his whole body hummed with pleasure. His hand on her hair kept her in place pushing her closer n closer. He himself tried to shift more into her.
The act which was meant to be a punishment for her slowly started turning into a passionate, loving kiss. His lips moved over her nibbling gently n it was more than just bliss. Her touch was so soft n soothing. His tongue made its way out licking her petals making them wet with his overflowing desire.
Geet was dumb founded; one moment he was screaming n threatening her n next she located his lips above her own. Her heart thudded like never before, breathing uneven n thoughts blurry partially with confusion n partially with something else.
He nipped her lower lip n she would have gasped if she could but instead she just opened her mouth thus giving him the entry he so much wanted, needed. His tongue scanned the insides it was as sweet as before. He felt so strange like he was breathing after 6 whole years. Contentment filled him like sunshine enlightening a dark room, he felt alive in real sense after an eternity. He crushed her body into his making her sit on his lap while his other hand went lower caressing her back, giving her goosebumps n him immeasurable fulfilment.
Her hands lay on his chest nor pushing neither holding, she had mixed feeling... her body liking his approach as he faded the ache she had for over 6 years of separation while her nearly numb mind was sending alarm signals as the end, she knew, was disastrous for her. Maan totally submerged in her moved his hand under her kurti, he wanted more n more. He had craved for it so much these past years n now he wanted her all.
She felt his warm fingers touch the cold skin of her waist, she snapped her eyes open n pushed him away. When his senses came back he found her crying n a tornado of pain crashed him.
Geet... He said in his softest voice trying to wipe the tears but she again snapped.
W..why? Wh..y.. do y..ou care where I... I stayed? She asked between sobs.
Did he disgust her so much that she had started crying so badly? He pushed the thought away while the anger was surfacing back.
I care Geet. He answered confessing himself probably after years, unknowing making himself vulnerable again. Of all the people you don't have to ask why I care. You know why.
No I... d..don't. If he thought she was crying hard it was nothing in front of the heart she was holding inside her chest, it was bleeding tears. I... don't know.
Because I love you dammit. There he said it. N it was all her fault, she rendered him weak that's why he stayed away but after last night... he couldn't see her like that. His defences faltered n he fell into the same pit again.
Her heart missed a beat n several others, for a moment Geet looked into his eyes but fears, doubts n years of wrong belief blinded her n she remained ignorant to the sincerity n love reflected there.
No yo...u don't. Geet retorted. If.. if you would have loved... she felt sick pronouncing the word 'love' from her tongue, it was not meant for her. me... then you wouldn't have married Shreya n... Jia. New tears sprinted out from her hazels.
She didn't believe him, she never did. It was enough to tear him apart into two distant pieces. She thought he loved Shreya... n Jia? He almost laughed at the irony of it all. Couldn't believe he just confessed his love to her n made a fool of himself... again.
He stood up, there was a limit of how much stabbing a person could take in a day n he was no more capable. Before leaving the room he stopped at the door. Where did you stay?
Motel.
Which one?
Th..e one on... the ring road. He left n she cried.
