I think it is more of a social custom and the director took his liberty on it. My aunts do not sit next to their BILs even though they are all close. It is just a social custom that is common back home. Actually it is cute because it shows their respect for each other and also allows the family not to be at being ill at ease.

I noticed it ..Ahem;s chair moved away from Rashi's i loved it..as harini mentioned.. it was more of showing respect , at least in our families. this is how it is 😊
