This post has nothing to do with KTLK. At least not directly.

It is about phrases like career woman and woman of substance that are being so loosely used.

What does it mean to be really empowered? To fight against odds and achieve what you will on your own merit? To stand up to a male professional colleague and then end up having a romantic relationship with him.

I love KTLK for the love story that is. I love Ashu and Nidhi - okay Ashu a little more maybe!

But, if these people were really attempting to make a show and include things like professional conflcits and turning into a woman of substance, I wish they had seen a show like Udaan that was on air many years ago. A show about a young girl called Kalyani who aspired to be an IPS officer. How she became one, her struggles in the process, her romantic relationship with her colleague who is the DM of the district that she works in...it was a truly beautiful and inspiring show...

A must watch for anybody who wants to watch a show about a woman's professional struggles!

Hope Udaan is from door darshan. Never heard about it. Whatever be the real meaning for woman of substance our Ktlk certainly does not have one. Here the heroine is depicted as the one who could not differentiate professional life from personal one. A woman who expects concessions from her dean husband. And to add insult to the injury it is indirectly suggested her achievement is due to her husband and there is a short cut method for success. One more lesson.Esp for a woman . Marry your boss and your transgressions will be tolerated and you will be given responsibilities you don't deserve . We don't go for logic. But a serious and noble profession like medicine should not be treated with irresponsibility. It is better t maintain the basic decorum.

Good post Sujatha... it made me nostalgic

@Radhika,
Udaan was a DD show in late eighties..between 88-89... a very inspiring one.. A middle class girl aspiring to be an IPS officer...

I distinctly remember two things... in the office, her subordinates address her as 'sir' / 'saab'... IPS is such a male dominated area and the subordinates donot know how to address a female boss even

next, Shekhar kapoor (IAS officer) loves her and proposes her... She is a girl afterall... the internal conflict to say yes or no was so simple yet elegant... she stands on oneside of a path and crosses the path... you have to watch it.. I am unable to put it in words...
and as she goes out on a drive with Shekhar kapoor to tell her yes, before she said anything, they come across a village scene where, a mother/father beating their teenaged daughter for something... Heroine (i think her name is kalpana) is disturbed and jumps from the car to stop the parents...

That was very good show... for that matter, I love almost all the shows of that era...
