VirMan – Their Journey Against Cancer [Part 8]
He knew now the truth that was hidden in her eyes. The reason why she dared not look him directly in the eye. The reason why she avoided his gaze. She loved him. Almost as much as he loved her. So he tried to coax it out of her, softly, gently. Hoping that his sugary words would melt her resolve.
'Pyaar kehne ki nahi, mehsoos karne ki cheez hoti hai. Jo iss waqt main mehsoos kar raha hun. Because I know. You love me.'
When she remained adamant, he tried to play hardball. He slid close to her, knowing that her heartbeat was bound to falter at their close proximity, hoping that his closeness with her would wipe away her every other thought about society and the rest of world and allow her heart to speak out.
'Main itni door se tumhari aankhen band nahi, knolne aaya hun. Apne dil ki baat baahar nikaalo partner. Kehdo ki tum bhi mujhse pyaar karti ho.'
She slid away from him, afraid to look him in the eyes. If he knew what was in her heart, surely he could read her eyes as well. So she closed her eyes altogether, hoping that he wouldn't know what he couldn't see. But the fierce beating of her treacherous heart gave her feelings away.
'Main jaanta hun. Tumhaari zabaan jhut bol sakti hai, lekin tumhari aankhen nahi. Tumhara bartaaw jhut bol sakta hai, lekin tumhare dil ki dhadkan nahi.'
So he gave up on trying to get her to confess. He knew she loved him and it was just a matter of confession. So he challenged her, like the good old times, knowing she would lose to him like she always did. He put before her, the 7 day challenge.
'Main jaanta hun ki tum bhi mujhse bohot pyaar karti ho. Lekin ab main tumse ek baar bhi nahi kahunga ki tum apne pyaar ka izhaar karo. Kyunki agle 7 din mein, tum khud apne pyaar ka izhaar mujhse karogi. Tumhare muh se I love you sunne ke baad hi main Chandigrah waapas jaaunga. Yeh mera vaada hai tumse. Aur apne aap se bhi.'
He didn't do anything he hadn't done before. He didn't need to. He had already shown to her, the extent to which he could go to keep her happy. He stayed there, taking care of her, looking after her, subtly reminding her that no matter how much she tried to ignore the bond between them, it would always remain. Their relationship wouldn't go away just because she had decided to ignore it.
'Agar main jeeta, toh yeh jeet meri nahi, hamaari hogi. Aur agar main haara, toh kam se kam mujhe yeh toh khushi hogi hi ki tum jeet gai. Dono soorton mein main yahaan se kuch na kuch toh lekar hi jaunga.'
When the pain in her legs bothered her mind, he cheered her up. Whenever she felt breathless, he was there to give her air. Whenever she felt too weak, he was there to give her support. In his little ways, he made sure she knew what she meant to him.
'Koi tantrik toh nahi hun, par ek mantra hai mere paas. OM MAANVIYA NAMAH.'
He brought her boring medicines in a smiley face and he bought her cute slippers. He did whatever it took to make that smile remain on her face. He even visited her parents, to convince them of his love for their daughter. He didn't need to; they already knew for they had been watching him from above. He had their blessings with them always.
'Mujhe aapka aashirwaad chahiye. Taaki main aapki beti ko hamesha hamesha khush rakh paaun. Aur hum dono ka saath kabhi na toote.'
She couldn't take it anymore. She was tired of running away from him. She was tired of trying to hide from him. She couldn't be strong for much longer. So she tried to beg to him. She pleaded to him to let her go. She knew he would never leave, but she had to try. She wouldn't give in. No, she loved him too much to do that. So instead she told him what was really in her heart.
'Tum jaante ho partner main tumse jhooth nahi bol sakti. Aur meri feelings mujhse yahi kehti hai ki tum mujhse pyaar karke kabhi khush nahi reh paoge. Jao, aur kisi aisi ladki ka haath thaamo jo zindagi bhar tumhara saath nibhaa sake.'
He wasn't convinced. He loved her. He knew she loved him. Then why this drama? Why couldn't she just say yes? Why couldn't they stop wasting all this time running away from each other and live every moment together before it all came to an end?
'Phir hum ek kyun nahi ho sakte Maanvi? Kyun nahi hum partner se life partner ban sakte Maanvi?'
He knew she loved him. But he had never considered the fact that maybe she loved a little more than he loved her. Yes, that was exactly the problem. She loved him too much. If it would have been simple, selfish love, she would have become his and spent what was left of life with him. But her love for him was much stronger than he had imagined. It was utterly selfless. So she gave him one last push before she turned away.
'Please partner. Mat karao mujhse yeh paap. Tumne mere liye kitna kuch kiya hai. Mujhe bhi toh apna farz nibhaane do na. Maan lo meri baat? Please chale jao Viraat. Please chale jao.'
