Ah well I couldn't help but think why I was constantly reminded of this poem by Vikram Seth-The frog and the nightingale
For those who haven't read it - basically the nightingale was stupid and the frog was manipulative and selfish[Reminds you of someone?] In the end the nightingale burst a vein and died all because she believed the frog.
Right after the poem,my teacher went like "Do you feel bad for the nightingale?" and our WHOLE class said NO.
And my English teacher said- Aww! Such a cruel lot you are!
I was among the ones who didn't feel bad for the nightingale, purely because in practical sense-It was her stupidity which led to her death.Even though I hated the frog, I didn't feel sympathy for the nightingale too because throughout the poem it had implied how naive and stupid she was.
Yesterday I saw a pregnant woman bleeding and receiving an electric shock.I saw a song from my favourite-st of movies being butchered.I saw a cliched scene of a cliched storyline playing in front of me ,on a serial which I swore to every was "different".And then I questioned myself- I felt bad for the poor baby.I didn't feel as bad for Anjali as I should have. Why?
Maybe because I am the cruel lot.If you imply the stupidity of a person for a million times in a row and then tell us to be sympathetic for her-it doesn't work.Atleast it didn't for me.
Trembling, terrified to fail,
Blind with tears, the nightingale
Heard him out in silence, tried,
Puffed up, burst a vein, and died.
Said the frog: "I tried to teach her,
But she was a stupid creature -
Far too nervous, far too tense.
Far too prone to influence.
Well, poor bird - she should have known
That your song must be your own.
PS- Just in case I am just connecting a literary piece and I do not mean to imply anything except the resemblance in the characters.Oh and if you want to tell me I am a basher and I should get out.Thanks.But no thanks. You are not in any way bound to agree with me on any point :)
