.. as far as I understand technology. This used to be the case about 8 years ago. But with digital transmissions now available all through out India, TRP calculations can now be done via the set-top boxes we have at home (and I think that is how they are done). It is very much possible to know for each box which channel it was tuned-in to at any particular given time. And this helps in calculating TRPs. Keep in mind also that TRPs are mainly used by sponsors and advertisers.

Having said that, IPKKND's slot is 8:00 pm which means it needs to fight against Balika Vadhu to garner better ratings. This, as you all know, is a humongous task. Balika Vadhu is still extremely popular with majority Indian population who watches TV around 8:00 pm everyday. On the other hand serials like Diya Aur Baati Hum have to only fight with serials like Pavitra Rishta, which has lost its popularity to a great extent. There is no other serial at 9:00 pm which is even worth mentioning.

Add to this the fact that IPKKND is the only serial for which both the telecast timings are pretty decent (8 and 11:00 pm) and hence viewership gets distributed. I dont think TRP calculations consider such things. So yes, due to these points IPKKND has much less viewership and hence low TRPs. Balika Vadhu is targeted towards typical house wives, MILs, daadi-naanis etc. But IPKKND is more younger generation kind of show, people who prefer to watch either recorded versions later or prefer to watch on laptops etc.

Hope this helps.
