C o n g r a t u l a t i o n s Fatima 🥳 edited:wow the girl in the swing, is that you She's so cute & carefreeOpening was different and we couldn't guess what was coming.Preet whining about everyone's focus is on him to pick on what he's doing wrong 😆 AwwwI love Meher when she is so unfazed by his reaction and she does what needs to be done and also make sure he's ok.🤣 Preet forgot Meher and drove off - highlight of the chapterTeji wow 😲 bickering with G3. Do any of the parents say that in real. It's great Meher cut her off in time 😳wow I love this Prem in your story 😲 He's fun and very caring. Heer is supportive and Chahat is so cute sending her Lucky Charm - This is the 2nd fav. part in the chapter. Family landing in there is a surprise, I thought chapter will be fully focused on just the parents having baby.Wow Meher referred Preet as her Lucky Charm *keeping fingers crossed* her words proved to be true.wow so this projects Preet as v. forgetful guy, it's nice Meher is keeping up with his nervousness and not let it bother her.At the end we could feel the uneasiness and makes us worry along with PreetInteresting dialogues. Good start.👍🏼
It was Preet's cell phone ringing that brought him back from his trance.
"Hello?" he answered stoically.
"Hey Preet! It's me", said Heer. "Listen, I just wanted to tell you that we all came up here in the maternity ward's waiting room. How's Meher holding up?"
"Meher...", said Preet. "They took Meher..."
"What? What are you talking about Preet?" Heer asked worriedly. "Who took Meher?"
"The nurses...the doctor...they took Meher to the O.R.", said Preet, almost choking on his words. "They said there was...a complication in the delivery".
"Oh my God!" cried Heer. "Preet stay there. Prem and I are coming up".
Minutes later Prem and Heer found a dazed Preet still standing in the hallway outside of Meher's room.
"The baby...It's coming out in a breech position", said Preet. "They took Meher to the O.R. I just stepped away for about 5 minutes and they took her away. They didn't even let me see her, speak to her, or hold her hand. I didn't even get a chance to give her Chahat's lucky teddy. What if...What if something happens to her?...Or the baby?"
"Preet calm down", said Prem. "Nothing's going to happen to Meher or the baby, I'm sure of it. The doctor just has to take all the necessary precautions when something out of routine happens".
"That's right Preet", added Heer. "They're not as common, but breech deliveries do happen. And Dr. Davis is a very capabale doctor. She delivered Chahat too. Everthing will be just fine".
"Look, let's go down to the waiting room", suggested Prem. "It's closer to the nurses' station, and we can get updates on Meher's condition more easily. Besides Ma, Bauji, and Heer and Meher's parents are waiting for us. We have to let them know too".
Preet nodded his head quietly and let his brother and Bhabi lead him downstairs. Not surprisingly, everyone was shaken by the news of the complication that had arisen. Both Teji and Gaytri began to fret, while Balraj and Lalit took turns in consoling them and perstering the nurses for information.
"Mr. Juneja", said the nurse.
"Yes", said Preet, Prem and Lalit in unison.
"I'm sorry...", said the nurse, "I'm looking for Meher Juneja's husband".
"That's me", said Preet getting up quickly. "How's Meher? The baby? Can I see my wife please?"
"Mr. Juneja...I'm afraid there's a problem with the delivery", said the nurse.
"Yeah, I know. It's a breech delivery", uttered Preet.
"I'm afraid there's more", sighed the nurse. "There's been a prolapse of the umbilical cord, and the baby's stuck. There's a threat of oxygen deprivation to the baby, so they're preparing your wife for an emergency C-section".
"Oh my God!" sobbed Teji. "Meher and the baby are in danger! Oh God! Please don't let anything happen to my babies!"
"Teji, get a hold of yourself!" cried Balraj.
"Nurse, my wife..." began Preet.
"Mr. Juneja", said the nurse, "I assure you we're doing our best to make sure nothing happens to your wife or the baby. However...the risk of injury or fatality does increase in such cases, especially for the baby. I think you should prepare yourself. Right now we need you sign some consent forms".
Preet suddenly grew numb. He felt as if his entire world had just caved in. Meher and the baby were in danger.
"Mr. Juneja please, we can't begin the procedures unless you sign the consent forms", insisted the nurse.
Preet blindly signed all the forms the nurse was holding out and then sank into a chair in one corner of the waiting room, staring blankly at the space in front of him. A wave of guilt swept over him as he glanced at the teddy bear he was still holding onto. He hadn't been there for Meher when she needed him the most.
Prem came over and sat down next to his brother. "Preet", he said. "We all know Meher. She's a fighter. Everything is going to be alright. I'm going to go call Kulraj Didi and tell her to let the rest of the family know whats happened. I'll also go get us all some coffee, but I'll be right back. You gonna be okay?"
"Yeah PB", said Preet. "I'll be okay".
Preet quietly watched Prem walk away. He looked over to the other side of the room where Heer was still trying to comfort her mother. Maybe I should go over and say something, he thought. He hadn't reached but half-way across the room when Teji suddenly began to scold him.
"This is all your fault, you know", she cried. "My baby girl is in pain, and it's all your fault!"
"Ma!" cried Heer. "What are you saying?!"
"That's not fair Teji", cried Gaytri. "We all love Meher very much and we're all concerned for her and the baby!"
"But he never wanted children in the first place!" Teji cried pointing an accusing finger towards Preet. "This is Bhagwan-Ji's way of teaching him a lesson!"
"Ma please!" pleaded Heer.
"Oh my poor baby! If anything happens to Meher, Preet Juneja, I'll never forgive you!" Teji cried, before storming out of the room.
"Preet, I'm so sorry", said Heer, "Ma...she's just upset...I'll go talk to her".
Gaytri walked over to Preet as soon as Heer left. "Preet, are you okay? You know Teji didn't mean it. It's just very hard for a parent if they think something is going to happen to their child".
"Yeah Ma", sighed Preet. "I guess...I know how she feels".
"Preet...", began Gaytri.
"Ma please...if you don't mind...I just want to be left alone", said Preet.
Preet went back to his seat on the other side of the waiting room. Was Teji Chachee right? He wondered. Was this God's way of punishing him for his initial reluctance about the baby?
Preet recalled the first time he had met Meher. It was during Prem and Heer's sangeet ceremony. He was 18 and she had just turned 16, and was the cutest thing he had ever laid eyes on. But aside from her contagious smile, what had amazed Preet the most was how confident and decisive she was about everything in her life. He, of course, had no clue as to what he wanted to do.
They had met again 2 years later when Meher took up admission at the University of Illinois in Chicago, where he was also studying. She was going to study law. Preet on the other hand had just completed his second year without settling on a major. She probably knew they were in love with each other long before he did. But then that was just Meher. She knew him better than he knew himself.
Despite the fact that their fathers were best friends, and that their older siblings Prem and Heer, were married to each other, Balraaj and Teji Maan had not been too happy about their younger daughter's selection of Preet as a life partner.
She also knew they were ready to become parents long before he did.
"Isn't she the cutest baby you've ever seen?", Ashlesha asked Meher.
"She's very cute indeed", smiled Meher. "I'm so happy for you and Rajveer. Can I hold her?"
"Sure", said Ashlesha, as she turned to hand her cousin a gurgling little pink bundle.
"Are you sure you want to do that Ash?" Asked Daljeet. "I mean she doesn't have a baby you know".
"Daljeet Chachee", laughed Meher, "you don't have to have a baby to know how to hold one. Besides, I've held Chahat lots of times".
"Kitni dair tak doosroon ke babies hi pakadti raho gi?" asked Daljeet. "When are you going to have one of your own?"
"Mom please!" cried Ashlesha.
"What?" Daljeet asked innocently. "You and Rajveer have only been married for a year and you're already holding your bundle of joy. She and Preet have been married for 4 years! Koi problem shoblem to nahin hai?"
"Chachee, you know I still had 2 years of under-grad school to finish when I got married", said Meher, "so how could I have a baby? Besides Preet didn't want to join his father's business, so we had to struggle a bit financially. We weren't ready".
"I'll never understand why your father let you marry that boy", said Daljeet shaking her head. "Nor will I ever understand why he refused to join his father's business. I mean they're filthy rich!"
"Because Preet wanted to prove to everyone that he could make it on his own", explained Meher. "He did, and I'm very proud of him".
"Yes but you had to live in an apartment in that seedy area for almost 2 years", countered Daljeet. "And you had to work".
"We needed the money", said Meher, "besides I like working".
"Whatever", Daljeet said, rolling her eyes. "Anyway, you're not struggling financially now are you?"
"No", said Meher.
"Then what are you waiting for, a sign from God?" asked Daljeet. "Can't you feel your biological clock ticking?"
"I don't know", said Meher, shrugging her shoulders. "I guess Preet and I have been so busy with work and setting up the new house, that we never really gave it much thought. Besides I don't know if Preet is ready to be a father".
"Men are never ready", said Daljeet. "We women always have to give them a little push in the right direction. And with Preet...well...I'm afraid you'll have to give him a great big shove. Meher, you don't want to wait so long that you're too old to run around and play with your kids. I mean look at me, no one would guess, that I just became a grandmother".
"Mom please", interrupted Ashlesha, "leave poor Meher alone. She came to see me and the baby, not get a counseling session on family planning. Why don't you go make some tea?"
Daljeet shrugged her shoulders and got up to go to the kitchen.
"Meher I'm sorry", said Ashlesha. "You know how mom is. She means well, but it just doesn't come across in her mannerisms.
"It's okay Ashlesha", sighed Meher. She smiled at the little baby in her arms, so soft, so pink, and so fragile. It felt so good to hold her. Just then the baby began to cry.
"Oops", said Ashlesha, "I think perhaps she's hungry".
Meher handed the baby back to her cousin, and watched her take her to an inside room to nurse. What's with everyone all of a sudden? thought Meher. A few days ago they had had a baby shower at the office for a co-worker who was going on maternity leave. Everyone had pestered her about when it was going to be her turn. It was her own mother's favorite topic of discussion, whenever she called, and now today Daljeet Chachee had turned on her. She and Preet would have a baby when they were ready. Right? Meher looked down at her empty arms. Suddenly she felt all alone and empty.
Meher tried to talk to Preet about her visit to Ashesha, when she got home, but all talks of how beautiful she and Rajveer had set up the nursery or how cute she found the baby was of no interest to him.
"Aaj mausam bada bayimaan hai, bada bayimaan hai", Preet sang, as he pulled the covers back slightly, propped up the pillows on the bed, and sprayed them with a light dusting of perfume. He then pulled down the window shades, lit a few candles and dimmed the lights.
"Let's see did I forget something?" He wondered out loud. "Ah yes!" He walked over to the table on Meher's side of the bed and picked up a photo-frame with her parents' picture in it. "Mr. and Mrs. Maan, what I'm going to do with your daughter tonight, let's just say parental viewing is not advised", he chuckled. He quickly slid the frame in the table's drawer, and began to strip down to his underwear.
"Meher!" Preet called out. "What's holding you up?!"
"I'm coming Preet!" Meher replied. Minutes later, she entered their bedroom. "Sorry Preet, I just had to put the left-overs away. Did you want something?"
"Meher", said Preet with a mischievious grin, "I'm standing in our bedroom, in my underwear, with the lights dimmed down. What do you possibly suppose I want?"
"Oh", said Meher, her cheeks turning slightly pink. "Okay, just let me go brush my teeth".
"Sure", said Preet. He smiled as he watched Meher walk away. Even after 4 years of marriage, Meher was still a little shy in the bedroom department. She never made the first move. And he loved how she still turned pink at his slightest advance. "Aaj mausam bada bayimaan hai..."
Meher stared at her reflection in the washroom's mirror. She brushed her teeth, changed into her night gown, quickly brushed out her hair, then opened the medicine cabinet to pull out a small packet of birth control pills. This was her nightly routine, but tonight it was taking her extra long. She took out a pill and stared at it long and hard. Daljeet Chachee's words still echoed in her mind.
"Men are never ready".
"Meher!" said Preet knocking on the door again. "Are you alright? What's taking you so long?"
"Nothing Preet", said Meher, "I'll be out in a minute". Meher stared at her empty hand. The pill had apparently fallen from her hand. A sign from God, maybe? She took a deep breath and turned the tap on, letting the water flush the pill down the drain.
"There you are", said Preet, taking Meher into his arms almost as soon as she came out of the washroom. He kissed her on each cheek, before placing a long and lingering kiss on her lips.
"Preet", gasped Meher, "I think...we need...to talk". But Preet wasn't listening. He continued to kiss Meher working his way down her neck as he nudged her towards their bed.
"Preet...", Meher tried again.
"Meher", Preet said, placing a finger on Meher's lips. "No more talking...". He smiled at her before turning the lights out.
