Maan was a man of few words, had always been that way. Vicky had been the talkative extroverted person in their group, while Maan got the attention without needed to talk. Geet was also the quiet and shy type, talking only when needed.
They always talked to each other, had deep conversation while Vicky added the humour and jest. But today the person who used to put energy into their conversations wasn't there and instead they were left with their silence.
They stood in front of the glass doors that looked out into the garden of the Khurana Estate. Both stared out into the garden but neither truly saw anything. Other mourners were in the main hall, while they had gone to the back of the house, wanting some peace from other people.
Maan turned to stare at her, watching the expression of despair over her face. She was wearing all white, her widow's clothes, yet she looked like an innocent child instead of a woman mourning her husband. That was till you looked into her eyes and saw the pain that had aged her beyond her time. She tugged at his heart strings, but then she always had.
"Aren't you going to tell me that it is good that he passed away?" Geet whispered as a single tear slid down her cheek, "That he is freed from the pain?"
Maan reached out to touch her head and gave her light pat, "No" He didn't add any words filled with false reassurances or regrets that would not hold meaning, instead he let out the truth, "I can never be glad that he is gone from this world"
Geet finally turned to him and the tears came out of her eyes, unable to be held back. "He didn't deserve this...he didn't"
Maan felt his own throat burn with emotions as he thought of Vicky as well as Geet, "No he didn't, he should have lived" He had more to live for than me, Maan thought with sadness.
Geet leaned her head against the glass, closing her eyes against the pain. "I want to disappear, go to Vicky"
Maan closed his eyes at the pain her words brought him. But he replied sternly, "Never say that. It insults the way Vicky felt about you and all of us who care about you"
Geet sighed, a sigh that seemed to be filled with such helplessness. "I am sorry but how am I to spend the rest of my life without him?"
Maan clenched his fingers, fighting against the urge to hold her in his arms and to console her till the pain would disappear. He wanted to hold her so close that nothing could get to her and brush all her tears away. He would have given his soul to sooth her, die to bring back her peace and even sacrifice his world to restore her world.
But then again, that is what loving one meant and Maan had loved her for a long time. Maybe even before Vicky had. Yet he didn't have the right to sacrifice himself for her, only to help the small ways.
"These words may sound meaningless but the truth is that you have the strength to live on. Your very love for him will help you to live without him" He promised and he knew that they were the truth having lived through them himself.
-------------------
She was stunning and Maan couldn't look away from her. Maan was used to seeing beautiful girls because as the captain of the football team as well as the house captain he was used to them flocking around him. But she was different.
There was something elusive about her that made him stare like no one else had. He didn't know whether it was the innocence that cloaked her or the serenity about her presence but he wanted to get closer to her.
"Maan this is Geet, a new student." Mr Mehta, the school principle introduced them, "Could you please show her around?"
"Of course" He readily agreed, trying to hide how eager he was to get to know her but he couldn't help returning her tentative smile.
They walked in near silence but exchanging quick glances as they walked down the corridor. Maan opened his mouth to say something but his usual reticence prevented him from opening up quickly.
"Maan darling" Sasha, one of the cheerleaders came rushing to him and tugged on his arm, "How are you?"
Maan got a lot of attention from women but he never flirted with them, instead dated them or just remained friends. He was the brooding type that seemed to attract everyone. "Good" He gave a monosyllable response to Sasha before tugging his arm away from her and walking away with Geet, who seemed slightly amused.
Maan was about to explain that he didn't like Sasha or wasn't friends with Sasha, when he suddenly heard the softest giggle imaginable. Turning to Geet, he was mesmerised by her laughter. Her eyes sparkled and her skin glowed with life.
"She likes you" Geet giggled again, causing Maan to frown then to give a small smile.
"Kinda but not my type" Maan brushed a hand through his hair before laughing lightly, "I don't even think I am her type, she just likes the popularity"
Suddenly out of nowhere, someone came running and bumping into Maan, on purpose.
"Hi bro! How is everything?" Vicky flashed his infectious grin before turning to Geet with an interested smirk, "And who is this stunning woman?"
Maan rolled his eyes, while Geet blushed at the compliment, "Vicky this is Geet and Geet this is my annoying cousin Vicky. Ignore him" He advised with a shake of his head.
"Just cause you get all the girls, doesn't mean I am not allowed to talk to a beautiful one" Vicky retorted and winked at Geet.
"Let's just have lunch before you embarrass Geet anymore" Maan rolled his eyes. But that was the beginning of their friendship group.
----------------------
He had loved her from the moment he had seen her, on her very first day of high school. She had walked into his life and changed it forever. They, along with Vicky, had been the very best of friends. She had never known that he had wanted her from the very beginning but instead she had fallen for Vicky and Vicky for her.
But that hadn't changed the way he had felt about her. He had felt his heart break as he had watched them together, holding himself back. He felt tinges of jealousy and envy for his cousin but had also been happy seeing the happiness on their faces.
He had never wanted this for Geet, he had only wanted her to be happy.
"Beti you will live with us, in this house from now on" Savitri Devi, Vicky and Maan's grandmother spoke gently to Geet. Despite being in deep grief herself, she wanted to console her grandson's young widow.
Geet and Vicky had moved out into a small house near the mansion once they had gotten married, wanting some privacy as well as independence for the start of their married life. Also Vicky hadn't wanted his family to see him suffer from his illness.
Geet shook her head, "No Dadima, I'll stay at our house"
"But beti, akeli kaise reh paogi?" Gauri, Vicky's mother and Maan's Chachi tried to convince her. "If you live here, we will all be with you and help you. It will be difficult for you otherwise"
But Geet was adamant, "Nahi Ma. I have all my memories of him and our married life there" She felt the hot tears burn her eyes but she held them in, "How can I leave them all? They are all that is left of him and our marriage."
Geet couldn't picture living anywhere else, not being around where he had lived and breathed with her. She was scared that in some way she would lose him again if she went far away from the life they had built together.
Gauri sobbed, "I understand beta but please! We want to help you" Seeing the determination as well as the haunted look on Geet, she turned to Maan instead, "Maan please convince her! She will listen to you"
Everyone in the family knew that Maan and Geet had always been closest of friends, in some ways closer than Vicky and Maan or Geet or Vicky had been as friends. Geet was the one who could always convince Maan and vice versa.
Maan stared at Geet for a while, trying to find the right words to say to her but when he saw the absolute sadness in her eyes he knew that there was nothing he could do.
"Geet" He spoke in his usual soft but deep voice, "Can you manage by yourself?"
Geet looked down but whispered, "Yes"
"Then stay here for a few weeks and then go to your place" He stated, not requesting. He knew that he had to be firm with her but also knew that she had a point. "I agree that, if that is where you want to stay, stay there but for now be here." Turning to Gauri, Maan then tried to explain to her, "Chachi ma, she has been living there for years now, we can't suddenly expect her to leave everything"
Gauri looked between the two but then sighed, knowing that they had a point.
Geet walked up to Gauri, "Sorry Ma...but I have to do this"
Gauri kissed Geet's hand, "I understand Geet" She patted Geet's face, "I just want the best for you because for me you are the last connection to my son."
Geet nodded and started to walk out of the room but not before going to Maan. She reached over and squeezed his shoulder while whispering to him, "Thanks Maan"
Maan just nodded, trying but failing to not feel the effect that even the most innocent of touches from her elicited. But then again he had been used to ignoring or burying it for years.
