well just like the rediff review that was posted by nush; here are a few reviews that i read before i went to watch KANK

http://www.indiafm.com/movies/review/12514/index.htm
">
and that review said:"In KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA, the actors get a chance to shine and no one shines brighter than Shah Rukh Khan. Let's just state one thing here: This is SRK's finest work after D.D.L.J. His sequences with Preity specifically, when the couple has their spats, or in the climax, when he just stares at Rani from inside the train, proves that he's undoubtedly the best in the business. The ferocity with which he delivers his lines and the restless energy he imparts to his character electrifies every scene that he's in".

and might I add that Taran Adarsh knows more about movies and box office success and has been a critic for faaaaaaaaaar longer than the guy from rediff;

another review:
KARAN JOHAR HAS KEPT HIS WORD…..4 years ago karan johars stated that " kick me in the butt if I make anything like K3g next time I direct". Well kudos to the man who kept his word 4 years later when his third directorial venture Kabhi alvida . .comes out .he was criticized for making the same old melodramatic rona dhona , karwachauth diwali kinda stuff in k3g. though the film was a super success im sure somewhere in his mind he was determined to do something drastically different and shock the audiences. And boy does he shock you and what not? 10 minutes into a theatre and you know that the 26 year old director has finally become 33 year old man. Kabhi alvida na kehna is refreshingly different and what makes it different is its script ..yes finally it is great to know that we have some great story writers who know how to win the audience . full marks to shibani bhatija and niranjan iyengar for writing such bold and hard hitting dialogues…the basic premise of the plot makes you wonder that really what happens if you meet the love of your life once you are married to someone else? Finally!!!!

now it wouldnt be right or fair to read just the rediff review would it????? 😛 😛 😛

and as for the overhype DHOOm 2 has a huuggeeee overhype;i saw the promo and YES HR is looking good but i already saw the good looks in Krrish and i shall see them again in Krrish 2 and in Jodha Akbar😕 he signed onto dhoom 2 after DHOOM was a hit--> what happened to risking it mister????HR shall neverr everrr risk it and shall star in daddy dearest's movies made for beta dearest for life!!ash is looking toned BUT "RISE ALL for here comes the ICE QUEEN";and the only reason that i shall watch Dhoom 2 is ABHISHEK BACHCHAN;and krrish had a huggee overhype when compared to KANK it's like a movie for kids; kank is everything that K3G; KHNH; KKHH; are NOT; yes the sets are elaborate; the clothes are expensive; the shoots are expensive but the basic storyline is completely different there is no bubble gum romance and there is no family drama; KJO has matured and how..

2 homes are wrecked; right or wrong; that is left to the audience; but makes you think twice; who is wrong and who is right?should marriages be undertaken just because the guy's father brought the girl up??because two people are friends??should the woman be wrong because she wants to make her magazine#1 and is not content with #5 and a smaller paycheck?should the guy take out his frustrations on his wife and son??is abhishek's character realistic??would a guy deal with his wife's issues just because he loved her to no end??should the Big B's character be flirtatious at this age?should a mother-in-law see flaws in her son and her daughter-in-law; and not just her daughter-in-law as would be common BUT remain beind for her grandson when her son leaves the house??what IF one finds love after marriage??should one go after that LOVE or stay in a loveless UNHAPPY marriage??is it right for sam to tell his daughter in law to go free??should they have broken up their marriages before they met each other??is such a movie right for an audience that cribs about the popcorn/bubble gum/feel good romantic/family drama/emotional genre;accepts a movie such as gangster; murder;has remix vdo-s and item #s on tv out the wazoo and respects the RDB/fanaa/sarfarosh/mangal pandey genre that is also in the saaaaaaaaame patriotic genre and does not question AK; however GOD FORBID that SRK does KKHH; DTPH; CC; KHNH; VZ; GOD FORBIDDDDDDDDDDD; and then when some1 give them a story like this and the audience turns around and questions what the director made and if he knew their sensibilities???the same sensibilities that give KZK and KSBKBT the highest TRPs???that make certain movies like julie a hit??is the audience's hypocrisy justified???oh and isnt bwood about song & dance and 3 hr long musicals; i mean if i wanted to watch realism i'd be stuck to CNN; is it KJo's fault that he celebrates BWOOd and then does a movie that might be for hwood sensibilities and ppl still stay on his case???

oh and IF someone can find the mumbai mirror review of kank plz post it here; i can't find it; alllll these good reviews VERSUS one rediff review to judge a film!!!HMMMMMMMMMMMM....lots of questions to ponder; and a few stoopid unnecessary scenes as well; characters can be grey and not just black or white;the white character = RISHI(baby B)

sorry for the loooong post😆😭

I thought it was good...very entertaining, emotional, funny, and very very reality based. And I felt that it was definitely better than KHNH. The best part of the movie is its strong message, which basically is that one shouldn't take marriage so lightly and do it just for the heck of pleasing someone.

I can totally see many people not liking this movie for the obvious reason😆, afterall it does picturize on something that our society doesn't look upon so lightly...In the middle of the movie, I too was abit dissapointed at Rani&SRK's character but at the end you learn to forgive them. You feel bad for Abhi and Preity but you can't really hate Rani and SRK. Their unhappiness was understandable but their approach of taking care of that unhappiness was just wrong. Watch it Abs, you will like it. If you don't like the kahani, atleast you can see srk with his shirt off...and seems like someones been working out😉

What I personally got from this movie is a big scare😆...If marriage is something like this, then I am not in any rush to tie the knot anytime soon

👏👏👏 wel sed cudnt hav sed that n e better.i thort the exact same. finally i actually read a review that actually understands the movie!!!!

Here is the Mid day review of KANK!

Bold and beautiful

Have a rocking time: Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherji in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna * * *1/2
Dir: Karan Johar
Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan

What's it about: Welcome to the world of extravaganza. Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is a classic example of a big screen bonanza. It's films like these that make watching movies a multi-dimensional experience.

And this time, it's not just about the grandeur — Karan polishes it off with his boldest subject to date, spiked with emotions that linger on with you, long after the film is over.

The young director weaves a spellbinding tale of love that breaks all boundaries. KANK is about two married couples, Dev (Shah Rukh Khan)-Rhea (Preity Zinta) and Rishi (Abhishek Bachchan)-Maya (Rani Mukherji), who're happy with each other but not hopelessly in love.

Dev's booming career in soccer comes to an end after an unfortunate accident, leading him to become a coach for kids. Rhea, on the other hand, is a successful career woman, heading a fashion magazine. The difference in lifestyles is slowly taking a toll on their relationship. Then, Dev meets Maya, who's going through a similar marital discord. Rishi is great hubby material and loves his wife to death; only she doesn't love him as much.

Their common dilemmas bring them together in a love that's forbidden, dangerous, passionate and yet, very real. Karan then takes you through an emotional journey that changes the lives of these four protagonists.

What's hot: The young boy has finally evolved, and how! Karan Johar makes the screen come alive with his vibrant settings, high-powered emotions, glitzy look and a sweeping tale of unrestricted love. KANK is a difficult subject because Karan breaks all barriers — there are no feeble justifications for the way his characters react — and that's the film's greatest triumph.

What's commendable is the way he handles the most sensitive moments without getting verbose or melodramatic. There's nothing really wrong with either Rhea or Rishi, but love still happens to Dev and Maya. And at no point does Karan make you feel apologetic about it.

The screenplay shines — Karan excels in both, the entertaining as well as the emotional quotients. The confrontation scenes between Dev-Rhea and Rishi-Maya are the highlights. And the film's climax is its crowning glory — expect the unexpected.

Dialogues by Niranjan Iyengar are refreshingly delightful; perhaps the best we've heard this year. The settings are awesome — New York has never looked better, even in a Hollywood film. For the interiors, Sharmishta Roy will probably bag all the awards without doubt.

The musical score by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy elevates the film to a new level and Manish Malhotra's outfits (particularly for Amitabh, Shah Rukh and Preity) redefine fashion. Karan also manages to extract the best out of all his actors. Amitabh Bachchan has never been in better form — no other actor could've added so much dignity to the character.

Watch him in his introductory scene — in the bedroom with handcuffs and a young girl in tow. Abhishek delivers his career's best performance — he's super in the lighter scenes and strikingly poignant in the emotional ones.

Look for him in the scene where Rani confesses to him about her love for Shah Rukh. Preity could've been more restrained but makes up with her glam appearance. Rani continues to dazzle the screen with her histrionics — she's casual, she's underplayed and yet, she lights up the screen and her complex character.

But of course, the soul of KANK is Shah Rukh Khan. It must've been a tough choice to accept the role of a loser, but SRK proves why he's called King Khan.

The angst of Dev couldn't have been portrayed as well by any other actor. Dev's sardonic approach, his flair with words and his impulsive mood swings — Shah Rukh adds a new dimension to the character, taking it leaps forward. Be it his interaction with his kid, his wife, his girlfriend or his mother, Shah Rukh takes charge of every scene, making every moment memorable.

What's that: Wonder what Arjun Rampal is doing in the film? His character needed to be established better. Also, what was Saira Mohan doing in a blink-and-miss role? And I won't even mention John Abraham.

What to do: Beg, borrow or steal — but this movie experience is a must. Watch it for its bold and beautiful content; watch it for the maturity of Karan Johar; and watch it for Shah Rukh Khan's ever-lasting performance. KANK is the biggest celebration of this season.

Here goes the mirror review😛

Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta in KANK

Film Review

A step-up for Johar
Saturday, August 12, 2006 | Entertainment

Mayank Shekhar

Kabhi alvida naa kehna
Director :
Karan Johar
Actors : Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherji, Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta
Rating : ***

For the past few years, in the press, or in random conversations about dozens of films, I have been quite befuddled by a phenomenon known as the "Karan Johar flick." Presumably that implies a variety of movies that are more yin than yang; that revel in a rich, breezy old-world Never-land of duplex bungalows with long, twin stair-cases, where it's all about loving and living. And no one needs to make a living.

It's not that I suggest Johar as too over-rated a talent to deserve the sobriquet of a 'school of cinema. It's just that until yesterday, the 34-year-old director had two films to his credit (Kuch Kuch…, Kabhie Khushi…). This may be too short a resume to be unfairly ascribed as a genre of films: whether to be ripened for ridicule; or for the filmmaker to be burdened by precincts of his own previous works.

In that sense, Kabhi Alvida… is, and is not, a "Karan Johar flick". It is; in the sense of romance that sticks to the idealism of soul-mates, and impassioned love at first sight. It isn't; for the relationships and roles are less simplistically defined. And popular, settled notions of unconditional, matrimonial love are at least put to sober questioning, if not entirely antagonised. Given the large set-up, the uninspiring soundtrack (but for the winner 'Mitwa') disappoints most, and occasions you to fidget over the worrying length of an otherwise decently-paced picture.

The ably-enacted movie, in order of appearance, stars Khan, Mukherjee, Bachchan and Zinta. Khan's uncharacteristically frail, fallible hero, Dev Saran, is a former football player, left limp because of a road accident; nursing wounds of a short-lived, victorious career. He primarily projects his frustrations on the go-getter, successful wife, who has little time for home (Zinta; vaguely modelled on Sarah Jessica Parker from Sex In the City); and their little son, who unfortunately prefers the violin to the violence of his father's favourite field-sport. Mukherjee's Maya has no one to blame but herself, for a confused, dull, mismatched marriage. She is with Abhishek's Rishi, her closest friend, who, purely by that inference, is now her husband. As she puts it, when friendship occupies too much space, there is little left for love.

Love is of course defined by destiny: two people made for each other. Which, as is obvious, is the case with Maya and Khan's Dev. Circumstances constantly bring them together; they share mind-sets apparently unique to their immediate world; and they both seem to wallow in a particularly low self-esteem (Maya, for the babies she can never have).

It's interesting to watch a story on love-outside-wed-lock carefully play out without falling into one-dimensional traps of a blame-game, where either partner is entirely villainous (scores of films). Or the actions are justified by a sweet, innocent, unrequited, but eternal love from the past (Silsila, and several of its clones). The film doesn't perceive monogamy as an impossible human attribute either, so I didn't see the moral status-quo on marriages being rocked (Mike Nichols's Closer; or its many predecessors). The discussion centres on how if you're not with the one you love; you need not be forced to love the one you're with.

A purely character-driven point (Shibani Bhatija, Johar), with neat dialogues (Niranjan Iyengar), that remains remarkably sympathetic to both sexes, none of the spouses being shown as a cipher. Though I thought Abhishek's Rishi must have been the unhappiest of them all (He loves the woman he's with; his marriage is going nowhere).

By far the weakest link though has to be Amitabh Bachchan's "sexy Sam" (Rishi's father), an old wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am. It's one thing to enroll an amusingly flirtatious, funny father (borrowed from Raj's dude-dad in DDLJ) to accommodate humour (most of which is well-timed and deliciously risqu here). It's another to have the supposed conscience of the screenplay hook up with a new whore every day of the week, in a film that takes its adult-relationships, love and sex so passionately. He is unlikely to be understood or taken seriously, even as he proposes that when an unhappy couple doesn't separate, they only deprive each other of true love. The other voice-of-reason, (Kirron Kher; Dev's mother) being that when limits outlined for a relationship are too strong, they bear the risk of being broken. This is cinema about interesting conversations, best when it's intricate, intimate and relatively intelligent. A step-up for the supposed "genre". A step-up for Johar too!
