Madhubala Rishabh Kundra : Damage Weds Damaged
" Maine tumhe iss zanjeer mein baandh diyaa hai, hamesha hamesa ke liye."
He showed the'Mangalsutra' to her as though it was his stamp and seal on her. And what was the viewer thinking? One sec, creatives! Are Rishabh and Madhubala married? Or is it some kind of a joke or half a screenplay of life hanging in middle of nowhere?
Maybe they are not married in the conventional sense . Maybe they are not man and wife in the sense of rituals. Like Rishabh teased poor Maddy ' "Abb saari zindagi sochti rehnaa ki tum shaadi shudaa ho ya kunwaari". But if you look at both of them, beyond Rishabh's septic-turned-into-sankee-antics and Maddy's lifeless form, isn't it obvious? Rishabh and Madhubala will never be separated. Marriage or a half marriage , hatred or love , passion or numbness , feelings or ignorance ' they will always be one. Rishabh may detest Maddy with his life , with every fiber of his existence. Maddy may be a surrendered showpiece all set to endure Rishabh's everyday sanakpanaa. But that is not how it is meant to be. Stonewalls always believe that they are lifeless . Until flowers and leaves find a way to go through their gaps. Its impossible for the stonewall that something soft and alive can grow from within it. Its an ordeal for that flower to grow through the crevices of a stonewall but it does. It's the law of universe. The softest win over the harshest. And Rishabh cannot and doesn't dictate the cosmic codebook.
In today's episode, while Maddy shows a parallel between life and lifelessness, Rishabh only goes to reiterate it emphatically that he is way too damaged , almost damaged beyond repair. Maddy is leaving her old life behind , still numbed by how she brought about her family's devastation ' she is still in a transition phase where whatever Rishabh said , whatever Rishabh did , didn't even register with her most of the time. Its like, she has closed her eyes and taken a secret pathway where she doesn't know, doesn't care what is waiting for her. She is committed to her word of consent to Rishabh and she has considered herself sold to Rishabh for life for an amount of 40 lacs. For her , that is crux of her story as Madhubala Rishabh Kundra and no matter what this new life brings , she will deal with it ' with endurance , with strength , with a first aid kit for herself and Rishabh.
As for Rishabh, more than being an egoistic megalomaniac parading Maddy as his most prized possession , he comes across as an extremely hypersensitive man who takes everything to his heart , not his ego. Look at him. Drunk to the extent of being sloshed , his inability to get those slaps out of his mind even for a second, his declaration ' " Madhubala slapped me with these hands ' now, her hand is in my hand and she is mine for life." As in, he conquered the one who hurt him. He reacts emotionally to everything ' and since he has serious emotional disorders and psychological barriers , his reactions are illogical, ridiculous , nonsensical and dipped in fury and ego.
Anger is not always a vice. Sometimes, anger is a result of your internal revolt against your emotional hunger and rejection which was not tended to when you needed that care. His reaction to the very mention of 'parents' today shows that he has nothing and nobody to fall back on.
We all need something /someone to fall back on . We all need roots to know where we belong. We all need to be hugged and held by our loved ones in order to deal with life. And when we have nothing and nobody to keep us standing , we become like an electron out of orbit ' lost , insane, unpredictable, damaged and dangerous. Rishabh is that category of 'damage'.
Rishabh was always lonely and a tad insane. Living a superstar life feeding his ego because his heart and humanity were hollow ' filling up a huge house with beautiful things because he could not fill it with the sounds of people ' focusing his energy on pottery and treating people like his slaves. And then, Maddy walked over that bridge to meet him. Whatever Rishabh was made of , whatever he could give ' he centered it all on this woman who became his punching bag to complain , to grumble, to cause pain , to be at his worst. The journey from becoming his punching bag to his comforting silk pillow is long and heartbreaking.
Rishabh has nothing to give except hate because that is what he is composed of. Maddy has everything to give because she is composed of love. Think about it.
As for the half marriage, these moments stood out:
1. Rishabh putting his hands over Maddy's during the 'aahuti' because he didn't want to be below her even in a ritual. It showed his bratty side that doesn't want to go ' he is the center of his universe and he doesn't understand or even acknowledge the existence of anyone else.
2. Maddy's hands being joined together by Rishabh in prayer for a happy married life . Rishabh literally making her stand up like a doll for pheras. It symbolizes that irrespective of what he feels , he will always take care of her , even if its in the meanest ways. His internal vows in contrast to the vows being chanted by the priest reflect his centralization of Madhubala as the focal point of his whole life.
3. Rishabh looking distressed and angry at the very mention of respecting Maddy's parents as his own. In Rishabh's life , his parents are an open wound.
4. Maddy's non reaction , tolerance and perseverance to Rishabh's cutting words , the Mangalsutra and sindoor dishonor, the forceful mithaai feeding, the suhaagraat threat. This is not her weakness ' this is her honesty to the business arrangement between them.
5. Rishabh parading around Maddy to the unit people who had laughed at him when Maddy has chadaaoed kantaap to him. More than an egoistic sankee, he looked like a hurt and humiliated child who was bragging to you how he made his teacher say sorry.
6. Rishabh's reminder to Maddy that they need to go to the hospital because he had promised her. A man of his word , he will always keep the commitments that he makes to Maddy ' good, bad , ugly.
All in all, an episode that inspite of a ridiculous half marriage promised you that Madhubala Rishabh Kundra or Rishabh Kundra Madhubala ' they are and they will always be one person.
