Hey guys, thank you for all the nice comments. Sorry for updating after so long, I'm actually currently on my summer holidays. Just going to tell you guys that this FF has nothing to do with vampires as most people think that SRK is one. So hope you do enjoy reading, and please do comment. Next update might also be a bit late, sorry about that.
Chapter 2
A Year Later
Eyes downcasted, I kick a pebble in my way as I walk out of class with my friend.
"Are you litening to me?" I hear her faintly ask. I nod, still keeping my eyes on the ground. She sighs, and then stops in front of me.
"Shivani, I was litening to you," I try to defend myself. She raises a questioning eyebrow and then pushes my hood away from my head.
"Oh really?" Shivani sarcastically says, glaring at my headphones. She then pulls them out of my ears and lets them drops around my neck.
"Hehehehe..." I try to lighten up the atmosphere.
"Hehehehe... If you were really listening then what did I say?" She questions me. I gulp trying to remember what she said before I turned my iPod on to tune out the voices.
"Erm... about you getting a haircut like an actress you like..." I guessed putting my hood up again.
Yes, well she's become my role model. Diana Penty is so pretty, she's my favourite character in Cocktail," Shivani carries on babling. We walk into the Canteen and sit in our usualy table.
"Hi girls," Karan greets us. I smile at him and then place my headphones back into my ears. Shivani rolls her eyes.
"Your so obsessed with your iPod. Don't you ever get bored of the songs?" She asks me as she gets out her 'lunch box' taking out her regular cupcake.
"Nope, I download songs every week," I state, turning the volumn low enough to hear them.
"How many songs do you have on there?" Karan asks me.
"Hmm... about 600," I tell him.
"Well that explains it. Must take you forever to go through them all," Shivani says. I shrug watching her slowly eat the icing on the cupcake. "Anyways, how did your basketball match go Karan?"
"Don't get me started," He moans.
"Why, what happened?" I ask, looking at him. He played around with a napkin, not sure on how to say it.
"We lost... I fell..." he said embarrassed.
"T'aawh, he's blushing," Shivani states.
"It couldn't have been that bad..." I say trying to cheer him up.
"No, it's really bad," He says, rolling uo his left sleeve up.
"Woah, that doesn't look pretty," Shivani says. We all look at the scar running down from his elbow to his wrist. Then he quickly pulls his sleeve back down.
"Okay, that is bad," I admit, wincing at the image which still remained in my head.
"So are you guys still coming to the school dance next saturday?" Karan asked, changing the subject.
"Yes, but I'm still waiting for someone to ask me to the dance," shivani tells us, sighing.
"What about you Madhubala?" Karan asks me hopeful. I look back at Shivani's cupcake which was half eaten.
"Nope."
"How come Madhu?" Shivani asks.
"Erm... my cousins are coming for a reunion," I lie. THey seemed to buy it.
"What a shame," Karan says sighing. "Maybe we could catch a movie tonight?" He looks at me hopeful again. I look up to him and he smiles, and I try to smile back at him.
"Maybe another time. I'm busy today," I lie again.
"Oh okay," He says disappointed. "What about you Shivani?" I look at her and her face lights up with a smile.
"That would be great," She says. I smile at them both before looking back at Shivani's cupcake which was nearly finished now. She pops the last bit into her mouth as the end of break bell starts ringing. I sigh as I get up from my seat to go to the next lesson. Karan then comes by my side, matching his strides with my pace.
"History?" He asks.
"Yeah," I say, adding a goan.
"Same here, let's hope we both come out alive."
"First to fall asleep buys the other an ice cream sundae."
"Deal," He says with a grin. He tries to shake my hand but I avoid it.
"Good luck."
"You two," he replies back and we both walk into Mr. Verma's class.
I go to my desk which was at the very back. It was a relief sitting at the back where nobody would stare at me. Sitting in my seat, I quickly grab out my notebook and a pen and then chuck my bag under the desk. Then I turn up the volumn on my iPod a bit so I could block out everyone's voices. Hiding my iPod in my pocket, I scan across the room and I find Karan looking at me. He gives me a thumbs up and points to the door. I follow his gaze to the door and then Mr. Verma walks in. We all stand up, respecting him, and then we sit when he tells us to do so.
He then starts talking and I doodle in my notebook pretending to take notes. Karan was starting to get too hopeful recently, I didn't like it. I knew Shivani had a crush on him; it would ruin our friendship. I sigh as I write some random notes, even though I didn't need it. Sighing, I look over to Karan and he looked like he was dozing off. A couple of minutes more and I would win the bet.
I look back at the front of the class expecting to find Mr. Verma but he wasn't there. Everyone was looking at me and I turn my iPod off.
"Madhubala?" Mr. Verma asks, shaking me.
Then all of a sudden his whole life flashes past my eyes. His love for a girl was denied by not only his parents but also by the girl's family. She was then forced to marry a childhood family friend and Mr. Verma then had to settle down with an arranged marriage. Poor guy, he had been humiliated for fighting for his love.
'This girl is weird, why did I go picking her?' he thinks. I look at him shocked but then recover as I realise that I was the only one who could hear his thoughts.
"Sir, the English came to India for land. They had a powerful empire at that time," I answer his question.
"Yes that is right. And that then leads us to Tipu Sultan and the fights against the English," he says, retuing back to the front of the class. I decide to pay attention now that there was only a few minutes left until class ends.
"For tonight's homework," Mr. Verma starts to say but is interrupted by a chorus of moans. He pretends to ignore that and carries on, "I want you all to research more about the British Empire. You will need varied research on different areas as you will be working in pairs nex week to produce a project."
Then the bell goes off and I pack my things up again and walk over to Karan's desk.
"Wake up sleepy head," I say.
"Wah- wait mummy. School's in an hour still, I'll wake up in 15 minutes," he sleepily murmurs. I get his notebook and hit him in the head, making sure on not to touch him. "Huh? Madhu? Don't tell me I fell asleep!"
You feel asleep!" I say, grinning. He quickly gets out of his chair and packs his backpack.
"Ugh. That means you won the bet," he says annoyed.
"Yep, now hurry up or we'll be late for the next class," I tell him. We walk out of the room and towards my next class. Karan follows me, and then pauses outside the door.
"Do you want to tell me something?" I ask him. He ruffles his hair with his hand.
"Urm... Madhu, are you sure you won't be able to come tonight? You know how awkward I find it when I'm with Shivani," he confesses to me.
"Karan, I can't come today. I think you should go, Shivani likes you. You will have a good time with her, and maybe you should ask her to the dance too," I tell him. He hesittes and then sighs.
"I guess it wouldn't be that bad," He tries to smile. "See you at lunch." He walks off to his next class and I walk into my English lesson just as the bell rings again.
"Madhubala, your late," Miss Kapoor sternly says as I slip into my desk.
"Sorry Miss, it won't happen again," I say to her. She looks at me for a moment and then returned back to her lecture.
After class ends, I walk up to my locker to retreive my lunch. I close my locker door when Monica and her minions, Soniya and Tara, walk down the hall.
"Just great," I mutter to myself. "Here comes the drama queens."
"I try to ignore them as I walk past but that seemed to make them notice me even more.
"Look, it's the hoodie girl," Monica acidly says.
"Yaa, she's too freaky to be a freak," Soniya says.
"Ew... what is she wearing? She looks like a guy," Tara exclaims. I roll my eyes and ignore them, picking up my pace to go far away from them. I trip over Monica's foot and fall to the ground.
"Oops, someone wasn't watching their steps, Tara says. I glare at them as the threesome walk away laughing.
"Hey you okay Madhu?" Shivani asks me, I get up and tidy myself.
"Yes, I'm just annoyed," I tell her.
"Someone needs to teach those plastic dolls a lesson," Shivani grumpily states.
"Yes. It would do them some good," I agree with her. I pick my my lunch from the floor, it probably was squashed now. Good thing I didn't feel that hungry.
"You know I can't wait for tonight. Madhu, you sure you can't come?" She asks me. We sit on our usual table at the canteen.
"I've already told you, I'm busy," I say to her. "Waise, have fun with Karan. I want to know everything tomorrow." The last part seemed to make her happy.
"Don't worry, I will," She promises. I nod, taking a bit out of my now squashed sandwich.
