Chapter Nineteen: Winking
Maanvi opened her eyes for the bright morning ahead. For a second, she thought she was back in Hrishikesh but then realised that she was in fact in Chandigarh. She sighed and jumped out of bed. Looking at the clock, 7:30am she saw that she had only half an hour to get dressed and shower before coming downstairs to eat. That was on of the customs of the Vadhera's, food has to be eaten at certain times.
I wonder what happens when a baby wants to eat at another time, will Dadaji get angry even then? She thought and then giggled at the thought of Dadaji lecturing a two month year old baby.
Quickly showering and freshening up, she skipped down the stairs with a positive attitude. She saw that the rest of the family bar Jeevika was already sitting down.
"Good morning." Maanvi said politely.
"Good morning Maanvi." Vanshika replied whilst the rest smiled.
She took her usual seat opposite Viraat, and mouthed a hello to him. "How was your dinner yesterday?" She asked to the rest, making conversation.
"It was good. I wish you all were there." Swamini said, Maanvi couldn't help but notice a disappointed tone in her voice.
"Sorry… Because of me…" Maanvi watched as everyone looked on at her.
"No no, beta. It was nothing. Don't worry about it." Vanshika reassured her, Maanvi smiled. Vanshika reminded her of her own mother.
Just then Jeevika came in, "Sorry Dadaji. The kitchen was a mess so," She started to say.
"Jeevika, come on. There are servants for that, the oldest bahu of this house doesn't need to do jobs like that." Swamini lectured. Jeevika took her seat in between Maanvi and Viren whilst Dadaji commenced breakfast.
"Bauji I was thinking that we should hold a family reunion, I mean look at this, it has been ages since we had a get together and especially with Jeevika's maayka." Swamini said.
Dadaji nodded, "Yes, that's true." Turning to Jeevika, "Jeevika what is your opinion about this?"
"Dadaji, I think it's a really good idea. It'd be good seeing mama and papa again."
Swamini smiled, "then it's sorted. Me and Vanshika will sort out the food, Kadambari can sort out the theme and entertainment and you and…" She looked at Maanvi, "You and Maanvi can help with the invitations. Is that okay?" She asked.
Jeevika nodded.
"Don't worry Buaji, I will help choose the best invitation cards that Chandigarh has ever seen." Maanvi grinned.
"Are you an psychic or something? That whatever you choose will be the best." Viraat joked.
Maanvi rolled her eyes, "Are you a parrot that you'll say anything?"
"Parrot? No. I'm 100% human but maybe in my past life I was a parrot, just like you were a Bandariya." He grinned.
Maanvi mouthed a 'whatever' and went back to eating her breakfast.
A while later, Jeevika and Maanvi sat trying to choose a design for their invitation card.
"This one?" Jeevika asked holding up a pink themed card.
Maanvi shook her head and picked up a rainbow coloured one, Jeevika shook her head.
Suddenly they came across a black and white themed card, with elegant patterns, fit for a Vadhera party. Holding each side Jeevika and Maanvi shouted, "THIS ONE!" and then giggled at how their favourite card was the same.
"How our choices are similar." Jeevika noted.
"Of course, after all you are my sister. Our paths have to be intertwined." Maanvi winked.
"Have you started doing that as well?" Jeevika asked.
Maanvi raised her eyebrow, "Do what?"
"This." Jeevika gave her a massive wink and then laughed. "Looks like Viraat's winking has rubbed off you!"
"Yeah Yeah, your devar isn't that amazing that I have to copy him. It may be that I just wanted to wink. His name isn't Viraat winking Vadhera."
"Okay baba, I was only joking. But I will support my devar, he is the best devar I can get!"
"That's because he is your ONLY devar." Maanvi teased, "Don't you get bored of him? I mean every time in your ear saying stupid things."
"What things? What ear? Look Maanvi don't say things against my devar." Jeevika threatened in pretence whilst smirking.
Just then Viren arrived with Viraat behind. "What's going on with the two sisters?" Viren asked.
Maanvi took this moment to take her jiju on her side, "Look Jiju, Jeevika di is lecturing me not to say anything about her devar. But what can I do your brother is like that, that I just have to say something."
"Oh really?" Viraat asked raising his eyebrow. "Bhabhi what was this Bandariya saying?"
"Look Jiju!" Maanvi moaned at Viren.
"Bhai is on my side dedfutiya." Viraat said holding Viren's shoulders.
Viren didn't nudge, "Nope today I am on my darling Sali's side." He sat beside Maanvi, Maanvi gave the most widest grin.
Viraat started to protest but then stopped, "Okay fine. Have my bhai, I'll have your di." He pulled Jeevika towards his side.
"You can have di, I don't want her anymore." Maanvi said smirking.
Jeevika faked a gasp, "What?"
"No Bhabhi, chill maro. We don't need that dedfutiya. Nor do we need the betraying bhai." Jeevika laughed at Viraat's words.
"By the way, Jeevika." Viren said, "Have you seen my shirt?" Jeevika was confused until Viren winked at her and gestured her to play along.
"Nope, no I think it's in the room." She said.
"Really? Please help me look for it." He said whilst getting up and holding Jeevika's hand and pulling her away leaving a shocked Maanvi and Viraat.
"He took her away?" Viraat and Maanvi said together.
"What just happened?" They said together again.
Maanvi tsked at him and Viraat shrugged at her. They then 'hmped' and walked away in opposite directions but then stopped and turned around. They walked towards each other and laughed.
"Your bhai is funny." She said.
"Nope, I think your di is funny." He said and then winked.
Maanvi replied, with a wink.
