gomatidj: I think you are making two faulty assumptions here --
1. that the collector only does work and has no personal life.
2. that the time spent with anandi and the singhs is frivolous.
I feel that these are both faulty.
First, a collector is a human being, and in addition to his work life ... he also has a personal life and personal time. Like everyone else, he has to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. He has to sleep. He has to go and pee five or six times a day. He has to have a social life too.
I dont see any harm if he hangs out with the singhs and has his dinner with them in the evenings -- he would have to have dinner anyway in the circuit house if not at the singhs. It is perfectly okay if he has tea and pakoras with anandi, at some point he would have to have evening tea and snacks anyway. Even in Jaipur, he had two meetings lined up... and he attended both of them... he was not present at anandi's divorce hearing or anything of the sort. In between his first meeting (which they showed him in) and his second meeting he went and released jagya from jail... that doesnt mean he is constantly hanging out with the singhs. He was not at the divorce. Even the skype call with sumitra was done early in the morning -- on his own personal time -- at maybe 7 or 8 am ... then he went to work during the normal office hours -- and the singhs went to court. Infact, he would not have seen them for the whole day, had releasing Jagya not been an issue.
He is free to do what he wants with his personal time.
His professional engagements are irrelevant to the story and IMPLIED. His job has no bearing on his role -- this is not the story of the district collector who revolutionized a district administrative process -- he is the love interest of the balika vadhu who is in the title role. His job only had relevance to bring the two of them together initially -- beyond that it would be wasting viewers' time to show him having meetings on a daily basis on matters of no concern to us -- we really dont give a damn about the roads of Jaitser or its plumbing systems.
Second, my interpretation of the tone of your original post is that you feel that these interactions with anandi and her family are frivolous in nature -- but everyone has leave time in their jobs -- and what people choose to do with their leave is their personal business and a choice made on the basis of what they perceive to be important.
If shiv has 30 days leave in a year, then how he utilizes it is his business ... if he has taken four days off to be present at anandi's mom's funeral and other related activities, that is perfectly okay.
Are we to judge him for this? Is it that doing other things with his personal time or taking leave for the singhs are 'less important' activities? I dont think this is correct.
His workload is implied. It is not that he is 24/7 not showing up at work, and playing hooky from work with anandi or her family.
