Foods to avoid during the monsoon

Though the rainy season comes as a relief to the scorching summer heat, monsoon showers also bring with them health perils like infection, allergies and indigestion. While roadside food is a complete no-no during the monsoons, did you know that even certain raw foods are best avoided. Our favourite STAR Plus characters suggest precautions while eating food during the monsoon.

Khushi says, "In the monsoons, we all keep a check on the food we eat, let it be at home or outside food. But what I usually avoid eating is raw and cut fruits, kept uncovered outside for a longer period". "I even avoid eating other watery fruits like musk melon and watermelon whenever I can. The main reason is that such fruits can be easily attacked by bacteria due to their moist nature, during this season."

Sandhya adds, "It's always a challenge to learn cooking, but thanks to Bhabhoo, I am getting to know how to be careful in the kitchen during this season. Like the other day, she told me to put fresh herbs and spices in the glass or plastic jars. Adding to it, she said that during monsoon, the temperature drops and the damp weather causes the spices and herbs to spoil sooner. Thus jar and plastic helps in keeping the fresh spices and herbs dry."

Ask Tejal, and she says, "I love street food especially paani puri and chaat. But I avoid eating it in the monsoon as thriving bacteria in the environment could harm the immune system. Plus during monsoons, our digestive system is at its weakest, and doesn't have enough strength to digest raw food enzymes. So avoid roadside food whenever you can."

"I am very conscious about my body and health" shares Viraat. "Though I don't like eating roadside junk food, I even avoid salad served in restaurants as, during monsoon, the raw cut ingredients get adulterated fast. And even the food products that contain yeast have the tendency to decay quicker due to fungi."

Hope you find these suggestions useful. What food do you think should be avoided in the monsoons. Do share your tips with us too. Be fit and stay healthy this monsoon!.
