amir Khan's 'Satyamev Jayate' truly turned out to be a trendsetter of sorts. While the chat show didn't really whip up fantastic TRPs, it managed to redefine weekend viewing in a big way. Taking a cue from the pretty above average TRPs of 'Satyamev Jayate', Hindi entertainment channels are now revamping their weekend programming slot in a big way. Traditionally seen as the weak spot in viewership, weekends have always been reserved for blockbuster Hindi films and the odd maha episode of a weekly soap. But all that's in the past.
Star Plus has an entire weekend band ready - 'Teri Meri Love Stories', a vignette of episodic romantic films starring Karan Singh Grover, Karan Wahi, Shilpa Anand, Keith Sequeira, Viraf Patel et al premieres on August 11, 9 pm. A weekend thriller, Arjun starring reality show find Shaleen Malhotra in the lead role is slated to be aired. 'Lakhon Mein Ek', a series of dramatic representation of real life good Samaritans, replaces 'Satyamev Jayate' from August 19. 'Nach Baliye', a starry dance show, might premiere on the weekend band by late August.
Colors has already pegged 'Jhalak Dikkhhlaja's new season on the weekend band (Saturday-Sunday, 9 pm), followed by a fresh season of 'Aamne Saamne'. Zee TV's 'Dance India Dance Lil' Masters', being aired on Friday-Saturday at 9 pm is already a TRP-tripper week after week. And then at 10 pm, is the scary fest, in 'Fear Files', based on true stories. From August 11, yet another edition of 'Ramayan' will air on Sundays at 11 am. Sony shifted 'Indian Idol 6' to the weekend band (Friday-Saturday) at 9 pm. The law thriller, 'Adalat' airs at 7.30 pm, followed by 'Comedy Circus'. Life OK's weekend band has 'Humne Li Shapath', a crime thriller that airs on Saturday-Sunday at 9 pm. Also in the pipeline, a Ravi Ojha show for which Ratan Rajput is being considered in the lead role. The laugh riot, 'Laugh India Laugh', airs on weekends at 10 pm.
Why is the weekend viewer suddenly being wooed with a vengeance, after being treated to a series of re-runs (popularly termed omnibus editions) of daily soaps, the odd special episode of a soap, and a Hindi movie? In 2011, Hindi GECs saw a 6.5% fall in viewership. The Hindi movie channels, according to the same study saw a 15% viewership, which is really nominal. The TRPs reveal that most weekend shows (CID, DID and even Adaalat) have consistently maintained a lead slot. Zee TV's weekend shows like 'DID Little Masters' and 'Fear Files' are growing stronger by the week. These two shows have helped the channel cross the 250-mark. Reason enough for other Hindi GECs to take a cue and try and rework their weekend programming. After all, nothing matters more than winning numbers. Even if it means tweaking the weekend!
