lOur Storyl
Maanvi ran down the steps towards the water, not caring about the people who were staring at her now. She needed to be at the place where she belongs. The place near her parents. And her Beeji had told her that they were in the water. In every drop of water.
She had always been naughty but also had managed to be everyone's pet. But what has went wrong now? Why did her teacher scold her? She just poked Aman with a pencil.
When she asked him how her new dress looked he had said that it was very bad and that whoever got it for her had to get glasses. Without a second thought she had poked him with her new Apsara pencil and got a high pitched squeal as a reward.
Her Di had chosen that dress for her.
So when he told that it wasn't as if she could ignore it. He had insutled her Di. And he paid for it.
Being a twelve year old was hard work.
She sat down at the bottommost step and watched her face play and sway on the water. She could only catch her reflection for a fraction of a second but she cherished it. Truely we only realize the value of something when it is snatched away from us. An example would be the contents of the water.
When Beeji told them that they were going to immerse mummy papa in the water she had not liked it. I nfact she had wanted to keep it with her. She remembered how upset Beeji was when she saw Maanvi keeping the pot of ashes near her bed every night before she slept.
But then Beeji told her that her dad had always loved this place and that he had also told beeji that he wanted to show her mother the places where he had enjoyed his childhood. Maanvi frowned. She had given in. After all papa had wanted to show mummy around.
But what she didn't understand was why there had to be other people too. Mummy and papa should be alone right? Wouldn't that me more peaceful? But everyday she saw more people getting mixed with the water.
She just hoped that they were friendly enough with her mom and dad.
"Nahi!!" she heard a voice roar in laughter.
"Virat! "Another voice roared.T hat voice was laced with concern and fear.
Suddenly she felt something crash against her. She screamed anticipating a terrible crack as her head hit the stone steps. But all her fears were unnecessary.
She looked up to see a pair of wild looking eyes. There was no daze or shock in them. They were somehow laughing and apologetic at the time. He was about her age, she decided. She tried to ignore those eyes which were making her feel strangely uncomfortable. She decided to focus on why her head wasn't hurting at the moment. She turned her head slightly and saw a hand under her head protecting her head from harm.
"Virat!"
"Mannu!"
The voices spoke at the same time causing both Virat and Maanvi to look up in shock.
Viren was looking at his brother with shock. He could have slipped and feel into the raging water. He was running on the last step. Anything could have happened. He had lost his father when he was six. And now at the age of 15 he had almost lost his brother due to his own carelessness.
He ran to complete the distance between and them and pulled Virat from on top of the girl checking him for injuries. His eyes scanned his forehead and range of spikey hair of any sigh of injury.
"Im fine bhai" Virat said, noticing his brother's scrutiny.
"Dekho.."
Viren looked down at the girl, whom his brother had pushed down to see her covered by another girl. She was pale and thin with waist length strait brown hair. One look made Viren decided this girl must be about his age. He tried to see her eyes but they were filled with tears.
"Maanu..tu theek to he na?"
"Haan di..Im fine. Don't cry please"
"Im sorry" Virat said.
Mannu's sister nodded at him and gave him a small smile. Virat beamed back at her and faced Maanvi.
:"You can thank me now."
Viren and Jeevika gaped at Virat, not knowing where this was going. Maanvi's face turned red.
"For making me fall?"
"For saving your pretty little head you bandarriya"
"I think we should leave" Jeevika decided as she tried to pry Maanvi's hands from Virat's neck.
"Leave me Di! What does he think of himself??!Chep!!"
Virat merely looked amused as he saw Maanvi try and miserably fail at strangling him.
"Yes Virat. Ma is waiting for us"
"Oh..ok fine then"
The two pairs of siblings turned away from each other, the setting sun making the sight a beautiful one.
But suddenly the moment was broken as Maanvi squealed.
"My button! Di the fancy pink button that you added to my dress! Its gone!'
Virat smirked hearing her squeal and moved his hand to his pocket feeling the button right there.
*******
"So that's how we all met" Virat concluded, watching his niece play with the button by twirling it on the polished table top. He watched her as she considered it. For a second she seemed convinced and Virat congratulated himself for it. But too soon, she looked up at him, a giggle leaving her lips.
"Not believable Chachu. Better luck next time"
Hmm..12 year olds are so difficult, he whispered in Maanvi's ear.
She laughed.
