Closer home, Aamir Khan's wife, Kiran Rao was recently spotted at a film premier, looking her chicest best dressed in a pair of distressed cargo three-fourths and a simple tan-coloured T-shirt replete with her geeky glasses perched on her nose, giving the term 'Geek Chic' a whole new flip. Actors like Kajol and Rani Mukherji are also known to dress down — wearing the simplest of kurtas teemed with a no-fuss pair of jeans, the glasses completing the plain-Jane look — yet managing to look their moviestar best. Even 'King Khan', Shah Rukh Khan prefers to wear his glasses pertly on his nose and is known for his penchant for simple, yet stylish T shirts. With the emphasis on casual comfort lending a relaxed laid-back look, it sure looks like both Hollywood and Bollywood has gleefully embraced geekdom, leaving us to ponder: Is Geek Chic here to stay? "It sure is here to say," says an emphatic Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The designer's past collection titled 'The Nair sisters' and his creations for Rani Mukherji in Black have paid tribute to the geek chic look which he says is very endearing. "It's all about being comfortable — even if you are frumpily dressed — and not blindly following the diktats of fashion. A little awkwardness can be so sexy. I think Kiran Rao epitomises this look and has contributed immensely to bringing geek chic to the fore," says Sabyasachi, who adds that he considers Kiran to be one of the most stylish people around.
When Mona Singh took on the title role of the nerdy Jassi, little did she know that the boring dull salwar kameezes she sported would become such a rage. "It still amazes me how people took to the whole Jassi look. I believe a lot of girls would ask their tailors to make them similar suits," says Mona.
How to get the geek look
Don't be afraid to hide your eyes behind oversized glasses — the bigger the better!
Girls, just dab a smudge of lipgloss and blush to complete the look.
