Ever wondered why issues like Contaminated food and water fail to move us? Isn't that a reflection of the general apathy that ails the society at large? Or is it because there are no clear cut well marked out villains? We can't blame anyone else, because we ourselves are guilty of contributing to the mess - so it's easy to shrug our shoulders and say "What can one do?"

I was hoping for some good discussions around water conservation and organic food - when both these episodes were telecast but failed to see any enthusiasm here. Quite disappointing.

Could it be that we are so used to the "Breaking News" sensationalism that outraging one woman's modesty gets so much support - but a slow and steady killing of the entire population fails to evoke any response.

I admit I didn't watch the organic food one...I didn't want to be put off by one of the things I look forward to when visiting India.
I know I will be careful, like usual.

But, I admit. I did not want to be disgusted at every bite I took...because food in India is unbelievably yummy!

I would like to join in the water discussion though.

But yes...water doesn't get you eyeballs. No masala in it.

Food in India is contaminated no doubt and so is the water, but food contamination is a problem that assails the entire world. Remember Erin Brockovich? This is an issue that most countries are grappling with.

Another thing when we talk of trade treaties etc - the first thing Developed nations ask for is that they be allowed to invest in Farming, Pharma and Infra sectors. The idea is that since they can no longer experiment on their own countrymen, they look for developing nations to treat as guinea pigs. BT Brinjal anyone?

We need to be more aware and realize the threat and counter it at every step.

Yes it is not sensational - but would it take another catastrophe like Bhopal to awaken us to the danger that is all but poking us in the eye?

I was thankful for today's episode. I've been urging all in our building for the last two years to consider water harvesting. No one paid any attention, not even my parents would take me seriously - they are kinda used to the quirks I keep getting, I guess. Anyway after today's episode finally they were like can you get us some details o water harvesting. Yiiipppee finally the conversation starts.

I respect the wisdom af posters HERE so I'm going to put forth a problem and I'm sure one of you will have a doable solution.

Brief back ground-we bought our land pretty much equidistant from two picturesque lakes-Surajkund and Badkhal. We are in the middle of the "protected" Aravali hills.NO MINING ALLOWED.No construction of the second floor, This was 15 years back. When we started construction the Supreme Court took cognition of a PIL about the devastation illegal mining was wreaking on the fragile Eco-systems in the Aravalli hills and banned all construction within a five mile RADIUS of either lake which are about 10 miles apart. Our roof was cast but being law abidind citizens we stopped construction for 18 months while Faridabad MC & Batra Hospital went to court since they fell within the proscribed limit.

What DIDN"T stop was the illegal mining! The operation is run by two brothers-one a Congress MP the younger one an BJP MLA and they are the SOLE suppliers of red bajri for Delhi's MAD and
ENDLESS construction spree.

Now the Surajkund Lake is dry as a bone-there was a hare brained scheme to cement it and turn it into a recreational area for off road bikers, which was fortunately halted but after half the area was cemented. Badkhal is a dirty puddle where druggies and mosquitos rule.

Then the MP brother set up a water bottling plant in our village, bottled it and sells it under the brand Kailash Water to the railways, all ministries,Habitat Center & IIC.

Our water table was at 20 ft when we moved in-its now 80 ft. The Factory is illegally situated but the rape & plunder goes on. None of the dept we have approached are willing to take on the fearsomely powerful brothers. We;ve met them repeatedly-they are infernally polite and after feeding us delectable snacks, send us off with a request to bring a written order and promise on the souls of their dead parents to follow the orders!

SOLUTIONS,please?
