CHAPTER EIGHT
In unknown waters
It had been 36 days since he had last heard her voice, seen her hazel eyes twinkle or her payals tinkle and 31 days since the day she had decided to leave him.
Still he fought.
His love lit the tiny beacon of hope for the rest of the family - his and hers. She would come back to him, she had to. After all, love knew no bounds.
His love exuded a power so warm, every person in the house was drawn to his room. A room that they feared entering once.
The once furnished room decorated in a single hue was alight with a riot of them. From The curtains in a beautiful emerald green, her favorite color, radium stars in different colors illuminating the ceiling, red bed spreads to even a small swing at the poolside.
Everything bespoke his love.
Love had created wonders like no others, be it the ever inspiring stories of Romeo - Juliet or Heer- Ranja, to memoirs that lovers made promises upon like the Taj Mahal. The love that made A woman give up her life, to man willing to sacrifice his most cherished possession and theirs was another such love.
No love was ever alike, even though it had been branded by a single word.
Besides what was there in a name when love defined one's soul.
Theirs was so entwined that none could live or leave without the other. Maybe they had been a reincarnation of one of the souls who had vowed to live together forever.
Maybe, their love would be another tale a kid would learn from his mother at bedtime.
His love broke through the hurdles not only set by nature and the people but also the one set by his beloved encased in a tower created by her own mind.
Khushi now lay awake, awake if it may be said but nothing was around her. Just calm, not serene but still. She did not know what color was the realm that surrounded her, it had no defined shape.
Her slumber she had been granted had been disturbed by pain. A pain that had radiated from her every pore. She recollected nothing, her name or her life.
It did not matter.
The pain subsided she did not know how or when, but it did and she gradually moved around each step at a time. No time to govern her here.
A sudden flash of light illuminated her world and the empty walls around her were thrown into a rainbow of colors she came to associate to. A shadow cast ahead of her, an object she became familiarized with. A companion on an empty road.
With the colors, the shadow and the little warmth the light had brought she decided to explore her surroundings. An open country lay in front of her, no other inhabitant or creature, no walls, no doors, no beginning and no end. Safe in the unfamiliar but warm surroundings her lips curved upwards in a smile.
As sudden as the light had come, darkness enveloped her. The colors and the shadow disappeared like her surroundings and she was enveloped in black.
As far as you may run, everything may go away but maybe fear was such an inherent part of ones self, like their ability to think that you could never escape it.
Khushi experienced something similar. Though, she would never voice the fear that enveloped her that instance, lest it may return, it was nothing she had ever experienced before.
She shivered, rooted to the spot as fear wracked her body. She lost her way, though she was intended to be on none. She fell to the ground, lost in the darkness. Merged it with the black, enveloped in a shroud, trying to make her a part of it.
She crawled on the ground, no energy to stand and face what awaited her. The floor was smooth and cold, she had never noticed, one inch at a time she moved. Afraid of things unfamiliar, the pain returned, it equal intensity if not the same and a shudder ran through her.
Pain, fear, cold, dark each and together made her beg, beg to return to the slumber she had been in so far, to numb, to infinite and colorless, to the world she had been living in before the bright light had changed her life.
She lay there shivering, fighting to reach to an equilibrium for an infinite period.
