Hi Hammie, me back with my comments 😊
Jagtap is a character that symbolises the free spirit of the forest, a primordial force, raw and unaffected by the limitations of values superimposed by society. One with nature he has chosen to live as an inherent native exposed to the elements, taking guidelines from the instinctive force of survival.
In appearance he is uncouth, unconventional devoid of the fineries of grace and etiquette. His semblance thus camouflages him into his environment quite effortlessly. He is a man of meagre needs, an owner of a humble self erected shack who survives off the yield and fruits of the earth.
Interestingly enough despite the first image we receive, that of him holding Dutta at gunpoint in an unknown territory we later on discover he is man of expert knowledge of plant species and their properties.
We also determine in due course that although to the two trespassers, he appears a solitary man, yet he discloses to Nakusha during the brief herb collection sequence, that alone is not for his wife Paakhi is besides him, around him in his surroundings. He symbolically declares that he is enveloped by this love for his wife, which we later on find out is deceased. He epitomizes an eternal bond between a man and his wife.
Agreed ! Jagtap has from the very beginning showed his place and intelligence. He was the king and they the trespassers...but like you have said he had more depth within him...greater meaning to life...one that came in the form of love and lived on regardless of the physical absence of that one whom he loves...
Jagtap is an eloquent man who is unafraid to speak his mind. He is articulate in his use of vocabulary and has the gift of speaking metaphorically, he is not hesitant to call a spade a spade.. as we note in instances where he refers to Dutta as kadhoss!
He is able to use his words of wisdom to get these two to see that there is something great that lies between them and in they end it is them who need to seize the feeling and let it work its magic...
There are moments when he turns to being a court jester and gives an array of comical expressions which contrast Dutta's angry scowls. One such scene is when he brings his visitors into his house and sarcastically suggests that Naku give her husband some bitter tea to purge him of the existing embitterment in him, which in turn would allow him to consider matters with a cool mind.
Oh his expressions were the cherry on top...it was like hit his ego LOL...the man so used to being above and beyond was like nothing but a simple man with anger issues and a stubborn perspective on life and love. I absolutely loved the way his passes got to Dutta 😆 he was very much needed as a guide in their lives...
Jagtap is a fairly good judge of character, he is able to see that although he Jagtap, considers himself the king of his jungle, Dutta too possesses the quality of projecting himself larger than life. He can deem that Dutta is man who is seldom challenged, for whosever dares, apart from Naku, becomes his enemy. Jagtap thus is the first man to actually disagree, question and challenge Dutta about his thoughts, words and actions.
It is stark reality that Jagtap in terms of age is more on the mellow to mature side if compared to Dutta. This then too compels him to consider that Dutta inspite of being a powerful young don, is almost a child whose moods and sulks, readily provokes his amusement. Such moment is when he entraps a helpless Dutta in the camouflaged trap.
Jagtap is a man well versed in the custom and practices of life, as opposed to Dutta and Nakusha. This knowledge of the ebbs and flows of existence than permits him to exert power via his words of wisdom to them in various sequences of JMM1.
Yes, like you have said he was a man who judged character well and knew exactly when, where, and how to make his moves to trap dutta...he knew the guy needed a reality check...one to get him to see what he refuses to see...and him being the more experienced, mature, knowledgeable of the two..he shed some light in the form of words and behaviour. Jagtap was able to gain some understanding of this man who was proving to be a younger version of someone he once was...someone he finished for his love...
Jagtap alongside his hard exterior is also a man with compassion. His initially coarse relationship with Dutta does change into a closer bond wherein he provides advice, guidance and counsel to Dutta and Nakusha, for he can see the prevalent love between these two strange visitors of his.
Recognition of what these two shared, the unconditional love from Naku's side and the stubborn view that life is filled with betrayal and the way he doubts at every given chance made him want to share what he knew...he wanted Dutta to see that he is missing much and one day he will realize it...and he wanted Naku to take her stance and tell him her feelings...he was almost desperate to help these two...whom he surely felt was sent to him with purpose...
Finally he also is the force that sets right chaos and restores order, which he does by granting an enlightenment that comes about only after a person performs a self evaluation of ones self.
I feel maybe Dutta recognized the similarities hearing Jagtaps words...and some where it etched in his heart...some truth in the words and his tone ...possibly could be seen by him but he certainly warmed to the person...his words...he reflected and did listen...and a tear even threatened to drop for the man who gave his life for these two...all in all his influence...his character...was much needed and very vital for these two...esp in terms of developing their love...
I conclude this brief summary of Jagtap Dutta's character, which by no means is the complete picture, as I would like you to consider further the following...
~ Jagtap empowers Nakusha, and extends Dutta.
I would definitely agree with this ...that's exactly what he did...
~ Jagtap is the absent father figure that Dutta is devoid of in his vulnerable growing years.
I would say that could be but I felt it was more of the connection to him in terms of person he is...they were almost like mirror images of the other...the age was the difference...but essentially the stories similar...
