we are not punjabis ..but even in our region in Andhra pradesh .. going bald means (somewhere other than a temple) when some one in the family is dead ..

but there is another religious thing that u can go to a temple like Tirupati and give ur hair and go bald ..when ur wish is fulfilled .. u offer ur hair to the Lord in Tirupati... if u give ur hair in a temple that is considered as auspicious and fulfilling ur mannat or wish ...

thanks for the info.. i never knew punjabis have this tradition ...

You Are right, I think it's everywhere in India that hindu's go bald when someone in the family passes away.
OFC there are religious exceptions as well, like people offer their hair to Lord Tirupati...
I was going to post it but good I saw your post.
Also, the hue and cry is not so much over the haircut as over the reason behind it...

its just old wives tale or should I say superstition.. Like if black cat crosses your path you will have bad day.. Breaking mirror is bad luck and if some one calls you from behind while you are going for work it never happens and other blahs .. Just like that going bald without death in the house is like inviting bad omen to happen.. Which obviously the new generation does not pays any heed to.. But the old people who are too conservative make a big issue out of it.. As you all know that Vadheras are so conservative.. Agar woh aisa drama nahi karte toh main surprise hoti.. LOL

@ Jaskabarun, Mahak221, heeriyehh, Kirann, ms.jazz... Yaar its not necessary to go bald when someone dies.. people used to do so in old days.. Like in old days they said that after husband dies it is necessary for woman to wear white and go bald, should not wear bindi or glass bangles and should not apply Mehendi i.e., Henna and nail polish and all.. But now the women whose husband dies are allowed to wear color clothes, they apply bindi on their forehead and also apply nail polish and wear glass bangles.. the tradition changes acc. to the times.. People who are liberal does not make scene out of it.. But people who are traditional, conservative and superstitious create a huge scene out of it.. It simply depends on people's thinking and mind set.. There are no set of rules its just people who make such rules and impose it on others
