A lot of my thinking was changed when I saw an interview of Dr. Vandana Shiva on Lok Sabha TV a few months ago. Honestly speaking till then I'd never paid any attention to how the food we eat is grown, where it comes from etc. Listening to her changed something in my world-view.

For instance did you know that saving the seed from their produce by farmers is a crime? The govt. forces the farmers to not only buy pesticides but also seed every year, and most farmers take loans in order to buy one of the two, if not both. This is the reason that the farmers fall into the debt trap, leading to high rate of farmer suicide.

If you want to know more about organic farming and how to avoid pesticide free food, you might want to visit her site.

What has Amir' s personal endorsements got to do with the fact that there is rampant food pollution. Silliness at its height and limited thought process,

Oh perhaps if you want to criticize the actor, you would like to go to other threads that discuss the actor, this one is about Organic Food in case you missed reading the title.

Absolutely right in that. Dr. Vandana Shava actually mentions on her site that in order to utilize the soil to the maximum, a farmer must plant 9 different crops at the same time and this would encourage the minimum use of fertilizers, since each plant releases different types of minerals into the soil, which the other plants can draw upon.

By following this pattern of 9 crops in a single harvest for 2-3 cycles, the soil might be enriched in such a manner that there would be no need for fertilizers.
This is also why her site is called "Navdanya" meaning 9 grains.

However like I mentioned in another thread, that while we hold the government responsible for the sorry state of affairs and the exploitation of farmers, let us not forget that from the time of the beginning of the Green revolution to date, almost every political party has had an opportunity to hold power at the center, and yet the exploitation of farmers continues unabated. We can blame the government, but we can't hold any one political party to blame. It is the entire political system that is the root of corruption.

I do respect other's opinions when it is relevant. I DO NOT support bashing of any kind and all you want to do is turn a simple thread about a relevant topic into an inane irrelevant discussion about bashing the actor.

Also that tone of your is highly objectionable, but then you are here only to create mischief, aren't you? Maybe you might've had more respect from me if you'd posted using your original id, instead of creating an alt.

Hey folks - do you realize that amidst all the drama unfolding in the last two days, we've completely ignored the issues raised in Sunday's episode. Admittedly it was the least controversial one with clear cut lines of black and white.

Anyway I'm reviving an old thread of mine, that I'd ignored due to the attempts by someone to hijack the discussion.

C'mon - let's get back to the discussion on Food Safety and some ideas on what we can do as city-dwellers to ensure that we get pesticide free food. Any tips on what are your personal tricks to ensure healthy food reaches the table?

Organic food is not ..umm.. a easy option unless it is readily available. already our veggies are double the price than they used to be. what difference would it make if i buy a carrot which is say, ten rs more than the pesti infected one.

Also, there is a big chance that corruption would happen in this case as well. WE do not know how to identify which is Contaminated and which one is NOT.

The biggest challenge I find in buying organic veggies is how do we know that they are organically grown at all? How do we know that the shopkeeper is not getting the veggies from the local market and then fleecing the customers by charging extortionate rates under the guise of supplying organic food?

The other option is to grow your own food. When I lived in an apartment with a adequate balcony - I used to grow my own own palak, methi, dhaniya, pudina etc. Now I have a small window which I need to keep closed for fear of bats straying in. Miss my garden :(
