Chapter 25
"Now and then it's good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy."
-- Guillaume Apollinaire
He looked at them licking away at their respective ice creams.
They were so much alike. No doubt they were sisters.
He watched as both of them dunked their noses in the chocolate chip ice cream that dripped seductively down their cones.
He couldn't help but laugh.
Kankshita looked at him like he had lost his mind, which was basically how she looked at him all the time. So nothing new there. Sharon, on the other hand, still looked a bit lost and distant. She had been like that ever since she had heard that news.
For the first time since he had met her, he was unsure of how she felt.
He saw her casting occasional, furtive glances at Kankshita and then the tiniest of smile would appear on her face, which would immediately be overrode by worry and some sort of...guilt?
Kankshita was unaware of those secretive glances just like she was unaware of the fact that she had just gained herself an elder sister.
He once again recalled what had taken place in that dingy, little office.

"Are you sure?" she asked the woman.
"Yes." Said the woman, a little offended. "She was given up for adoption by a Mr. Raiprakash."
By now, Sharon was quite literally crushing the bones of his hand. He already couldn't feel the blood flowing through the veins of his left arm.
He decided that she needed a bit of a fresh air, so murmuring a soft thanks, he led her out.
The lobby wasn't much of a help so he continued to drag her till they were out in the open.
Once the fresh, crisp air, unobtrusively hit her face, she began taking in lungful of it.
"Swayam" she said, "Kankshita is my sister."
"I know Sharon, but that's no reason to fracture my arm." He said, gently stroking her shoulders.
"How do you feel about it?" he continued.
"I...I...I don't know how I feel!" she said, looking a bit blank.
He was about to say something, when a tinkling voice rang from behind.
"Sharon didi! How about that ice-cream you promised?" said Kankshita, looking over her shoulders every few seconds, as if waiting for someone to come up and take her away.
Sharon looked at her like she was seeing a ghost.
"Umm...Sharon didi?" asked Kankshita, biting the inside of her cheek.
Sharon still had the dumbfounded look on her face. He decided that he needed to take matters in his own hands.
"If I may make a humble request," he said majestically, bowing down a little like he was some sort of a court jester, "would Miss Kankshita mind if I took her out for an ice cream?"
"I don't care who takes me as long as I get an ice cream in the bargain." Said Kankshita, for the first time smiling a little at him.
She then looked at Sharon uncertainly and said-
"She is coming too, right?"
"Of course! Look at her!" he said, with mock horror, "She would be lost without me."
That got him yet another smile from Kankshita.
"You know, you are not as stupid as I thought you were!" she said, catching hold of one of Sharon's hand.
"And I thought you'd never say that!" he said, holding Sharon's other arm and propelling her towards the car.
"What happened to her?" asked Kankshita.
"Life." He said, cryptically, shaking his head the tiniest bit.

She was doing much better now, thanks to the soothing quality imparted by the chocolate ice cream. At least she looked in her senses now. Well, almost.
With one swipe of his index finger, he wiped the chocolate stain from Kankshita's nose, laughing harder as her green eyes turned inwards to squint at her nose.
Unthinkingly, he turned towards Sharon and began wiping her nose with his thumb. His laughter died as he saw her looking into his eyes, confused and shocked. His thumb, however, continued rubbing at her nose.
A small, little cough from somewhere outside their world, broke their eyelock and they looked away awkwardly.
Kankshita smirked at him knowingly. He had absolutely no idea why.
"Kanks," said, Sharon, suddenly. "I need to talk to you."
"Hmm?" said Kankshita, still licking at her ice cream.
Sharon looked at Swayam, who nodded encouragingly.
"Um...I'm...I'm...your sister." She said, looking intently at her for her reaction.
Kankshita stopped mid-lick and looked at her, her eyes going round with surprise. After a small pause, she asked-
"For real?"
Sharon nodded, still unable to interpret her emotions.
Kankshita shrugged a little and went back to licking her ice cream.
Sharon looked at her confusedly.
"Don't you wanna ask anything?"
"Not really." She said, simply.
"Well, how do you feel about it?"
"I'm glad." She said, finally looking up. "I'm glad it's you."
Sharon couldn't help but smile at that.
"Don't you wanna know anything?"
"Well, I knew this day would come. I had to belong to someone. I was waiting for the day my parents would come to pick me up. Where are they, by the way?" She asked innocently.
"They are...dead." she said, looking away.
" Oh, I'm sorry for you." She said, stroking her cheek.
Sharon looked at her surprised.
"For me?"
"Yeah, I didn't know them at all. Except as faint, mental images. You knew them. You loved them. Of course, your pain is much more."
Sharon felt a tear drop from her eyes, even as her lips turned up into a smile.
"It's getting late." Said Swayam, "We should head back."
Sharon reluctantly nodded in agreement.

They parked the car in front of the building, just as the glowing, beatific sun hugged the Earth in a passionate embrace with its tinted cloak trailing behind it taking with it the last light of the day.
They climbed out of the car and walked through the gates only to find a group of people huddled near the entrance of the main building.
Among them was the woman in the office, who as soon as she saw them shrieked and came running towards them. Kankshita looked scared as hell as the woman caught her by the arm and bodily shook her, anger burning on her face.
"Where were you, you foolish girl?" she asked, spitting the words out and hitting Kankshita on her shoulder.
Sharon, previously confused at this behaviour, now had had about enough.
"Hey! How dare you talk to her like that? Don't you know how to talk to children?" she asked, as Swayam pulled Kankshita out of that woman's clutches.
"Excuse me? I'm incharge of this orphanage which makes me incharge of this imbecile girl. Who by the way went out of the orphanage without permission! All of us had been looking for this stupid girl since god knows when. Like we have no other work than to look for this miscreant!" she scoffed, her face contorted to ugly proportions.
Sharon moved closer to the woman, a dangerous look in her eyes.
"First of all, if you ever talk to my sister like that or even touch her for that matter, ever again, you will live to regret it!" said Sharon icily.
"Sharon..." said Swayam, cautioning her.
But she paid no heed.
"And second of all, my sister is not going to live in this hellhole any longer. I'm taking her with me." She said, resolutely.
The woman smirked a little.
"You can't take her." she said.
"Of course I can!" said Sharon, indignantly.
"How old are you?" she asked.
"I'm 18." She fired back.
"Well, as per the laws of this land, you can't adopt unless you're 21." Said the woman, smugly.
"I don't care! Nobody's going to stop me from taking my sister with me!" she said.
Turning towards Swayam and Kankshita she said, "Let's go."
"You know what? Fine. Take her with you! Less burden for us!" said the woman scornfully.
Sharon turned back and said, "Screw you, you evil bitch!"
She turned back and headed towards the car, leaving behind the shocked woman staring angrily at her.

She felt his arm on her shoulder and she turned around to see him balancing two mugs of coffee in one hand. He offered her one and she took it gratefully.
He sat beside her on the edge of the porch, with their feet dangling down, almost touching the ground.
"Where's Kankshita?" he asked, taking a sip of the coffee.
"She's sleeping in the guest bedroom. She had a long day." She said, staring at the faint light emitted by the streetlamp, as it glowed gloomily.
"And you didn't?" he asked. "Drink it before it gets cold."
She sighed, before she gulped down the coffee in one go, never once removing her eyes from the lamp.
And then, still in a daze, she dropped her head on his shoulder as the hypnotizing glare of the lamp threatened to put her to sleep. He shifted uneasily.
"You make good coffee." She said.
"Thanks." He managed to say. She felt his ragged breath on her forehead, soothing the worry lines that had been lining it and she felt his torso rise up and fall rapidly as his heart rate increased. But she made no attempt to move.
It was a while before his breath evened out. When it finally did, he asked her-
"What are you going to do about Kankshita?"
She had almost fallen into a stupor when his voice jerked her out of it.
"I'm not going to let some stupid orphanage take her away from me. She is my sister. And as far as the whole adoption law goes, in case you haven't noticed I now have immense wealth and a family lawyer at my disposal. I'm sure he will find a solution to this." She said, smiling.
"So now there's going to be two of you?" he asked, laughing.
"What's that supposed to mean?" she asked.
"Nothing." He said, smiling.
They sat there till she fell asleep. He once again picked her up as he had done last night and put her on her bed, covering her up with blankets. He stood there for a minute looking gravely at her.
I can't let her come close to me. This isn't going to end well. None of it ever does. He thought, as he recalled the news he had received earlier today.
