Dumping Style
Ranbir and Deepika were the hottest young couple on the block. That is until the wheels came unstuck. Sources say that Deepika's possessiveness and her desire to be married, plus his parents' rather cold reception of Deepika into their lives, eventually led to Ranbir dumping her. Of course, there was that link-up with his Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and Rajneeti co-star Katrina Kaif as well! Soon after the rather humiliating break-up, Deepika went into hiding for a while – only to return bolder and stronger (read Masala! issue 325).
Shahid and Kareena looked like they'd last all the way to the shaadi mandap. And then after four years of togetherness, on the eve of their first big hit together, they broke up. No reasons were given, although many were hinted at by 'friends' of both parties. Since then it has come to light that it was Bebo who pulled the plug on this relationship after catching Shahid red-handed with his then co-star Vidya Balan.
Relationship with the exes
Ranbir may have broken her heart badly but Deepika is able to talk about him with equanimity. In fact, there are talks about the two having at least revived their friendship for now and Deepika has even gone on record to say that she and Ranbir are open to working with each other. Wow!
But Shahid has not fared so well. He was completely blanked out of her life by Kareena after the break-up. In between there was also a war of words in print where Bebo accused Shahid of trying to gain mileage for his films by referring to her. But finally, things appear to be thawing when K-Jo played peacemaker (again) and got them talking civilly to each other at a party at SRK's home. Shahid's other exes, however, are not in such a forgiving mood, with Priyanka refusing to acknowledge his sms congratulating her on winning the National Award!
Vidya has even gone to the extent of saying, "I have lost a lot of weight. I am feeling healthier and happier. Till Kismat Konnection everything was fine… but if someone who matters to you talks you down, it can break you. That someone, whose approval mattered to me, started to constantly find faults with me. It started reflecting on me. At that point, it was important to walk away from that relationship. I don't want to take his name." When told that Shahid has said he will never work with her, Vidya retorted, "Did I say that I want to work with him? If someone doesn't want to work with me, so be it. It's his loss."
Mama's boy
Both are devoted to their families, but Ranbir is the absolute mama's boy, although Neetu Kapoor did mention at a recent award function that Ranbir has, in the last one year (that recent?!), ceased to be one. Hmmm… Too late for Deepika we guess!
Shahid, on the other hand, has always been an independent young man. He moved out of his mother Neelima Azim's house a few years ago and stays on his own. To his credit he maintains great relationships with both parents and their current spouses.
20 years from now
Both will definitely be married (to a gorgeous actress we are sure) and be proud papas. But will they be devoted husbands like SRK or be dogged by rumours and / or divorces like the rest of B'wood's leading men – only time will tell. But we see Ranbir Kapoor sticking through with his marriage (happy or otherwise), as it is the whole Kapoor reputation on line. While we don't see Shahid staying married unless he is truly, happily married. He is his own man, while Ranbir is, first and foremost, a Kapoor!

RANBIR! While Shahid is more his own man and way too good looking for his own good, we have to say that Ranbir comes toppers for us cause he just has a far better track record with the girls… or maybe he is just better at hiding his flings (wink**wink). Also, he has that indefinable X factor that screams 'Born To Be A Hunk'!
