Saas-bahu: The saga continues-DC article

The bickering between a saas and bahu seems to be the mainstay of most family dramas on TV. And Imarti Devi's tantrums have taken this chemistry to an altogether different level in the serial, Kairi Rishta Khatta Meetha. Hema Singh plays possessive mother Imarti Devi, who keeps both her daughters-in-law on their toes.
"In real life, women happen to be complex characters," says Hema, an alumnus of the National School of Drama, adding, "They can be polite, satirical or evil. My character is very attached to her son. She has faced a lot of struggle while bringing him up, so she behaves hysterically with the bahus."
Does she also endorse this possessiveness? "No. Imarti should come out of her shell and give some space to her son and bahus. This is just not fair," she says in a polished manner, a far cry from her Awadhi accent on the tube, especially her signature word 'humbay'. "My fans are shocked when they see or hear me off screen. Since the serial is set in Gwalior, we had to pick up the local nuances," says the theatre actress.
How well does she get along with the actress who plays her second bahu Mala, the one who is always rebelling against her? "She is a young and sweet person in real life." It has been fun working with her right from the first day," she says.
