would you like to interview her too?" *snigger*

Given that today's episode in Satyamev Jayate dealt with Domestic Violence, I thought it would be interesting to see what would come out of an analysis both SMJ's points on the issue as well as what has been seen in DSDD so far.

The above quote was from one of the one-line interviews taken by the SMJ team around cities, asking a number of men whether they thought 'maar-peet' of their wives was justified. As far as my interpretation of this episode goes, I felt the crux of Aamir Khan's argument had to do with doing away the notion that the husband is a god-figure in the family; that what he does is condoned because he is automatically deified. That what he does is allowed because patriarchy does not allow the woman to feel that she is an independent being - she is a subject at the mercy of whichever male figure is the head in her family -- be it her father, her brother, her husband or her son.

In a lot of ways, I do see this attitude in Viraaj often. When Jhanvi has memories of Viraaj, it's the terror and the humiliation we see. When Viraaj sees her in his memories, Jhanvi is a subject who bends over backwards doing things for him, fear written in bold letters on her face. She fears him the way she would fear an angry god. Hearing the Patidev argument, I was reminded in a lot of ways of Viraaj's conversations with the god in his puja room: especially of his anger that God dared to take Jhanvi away even though he was her Parmeshwar, as well as his description of the Viraasleela, which I laughed at and felt disturbed by, because it amazed me that he could punish Jhanvi for what he thought was interest in another man, but didn't mind speaking of a 'raasleela' with another woman so soon after her supposed death.

The other thing that struck me was a point that SMJ didn't highlight, but that I realized later...how other forms of media - ads, literature, movies, songs, daily soaps - help shape the way people think on this issue. How condoning eve-teasing through a 'ladki-chedna' song in a romantic film finds its way into the streets, how stalking is brushed away by the statement 'but it's true love'! How does a soap like DSDD-SB fit into this? I think of this question, remember some of the vitirol I see towards Jhanvi, and the starry-eyed fascination with Viraaj, on the LifeOk facebook pages, and shudder. That's all I can really say.

@ Anna kamini ... I wrote so much and tune ek line likh daali! Zulmi aurat ... Sorry I keep up with my rants hun ... And thankyou for always listening. 🤗

Lizzy funnily enough I was going to post something about today's episode of SMJ ... I even spoke to Anna about it. khair what broke my heart was that woman who said her son had become depressed. . The consequnces of seeing a father abuse ... I don't know, where do I even begin to find the words.

Remember Viraj in that room with Jaanvi talking about him wanting his son to be " fearless " ...

yesterdays SJ was a thought provoking one..each time a woman came up with her life of torture!!!i could see a jahnvi in them!!!!all of them like her...put up with their abusive hubby..in some cases for yrs!!!shocking that 1 of every 2 womwn in our country undergoes DV😲 as our show is based on DV..i have to say...the show does nothing in terms of spreading a messg..i think the next thing v have to see is jahnvi go bak😡 i was shocked at many ppl praising Virajs"love " for jahnvi..even comments like"no one can love like VD"...in SJ there was the moment where aamir mocks the statement"husbands beat their wives beacuse they love them"..n will they say the same if jahnvi gives 2 slaps bak to him justifying it as her love for him???NO..we live in a society..whre men are considered above everything else! the glee n pride with which certain men said they beat up their wives was disgusting🤢 no woman wants a parmeshwar..every woman wants a dosth in the form of life partner!

as of the stalking part..i couldnt agree with u more..where the guy comes behind u..saying he loves u so much..trying to butt in everything u do..trying to do everything for u to such an extent that u gt irritated n politely ask him to quit..but for yrs n yrs it goes on..n the society n the ppl around u come n say"wat a cruel gal u are??the guy loves u so so much..n luk at ur disgusting attitude" making u feel guilty of urself..as if u r at fault!
this society needs a change!🤢

was going to create a post on it liz...great u did it...

the first thing that came to my mind wen i saw yesterday's SJ was SB
i will not go into the viraj details coz i'm sick and tired of it...but i would like to point on something on the lines of patriarchy...
one DCP who was interviewed...confessed that his own force(the police) suggest the victims to go back to their abusers...assuring them that they will change...
from where does this suggestion come from?
it comes from a man...who is very much a part of this society who believes in the fact that he is superior...and has the right to inflict pain...
u know liz...i don't feel this show will do any sort of justice to the "domestic violence"...jahnvi/sia will always remain a victim and we will see her going back to her abuser...get abused/raped again and again...and suffer...thats her destiny...
reason is...the whole team which works behind the screen...is a male dominated one...who do belong to this society which believes in patriarchy...and who can never ever dream of thinking of giving an equal status to women...
the statistics are shocking...84% women suffering from domestic violence???
it should put us all to shame...each one of us out here...
and its not just the males i'm talking abt...we as women should be ashamed coz somewhere down the line..we have encouraged it...the victims who were interviewed...all had one same opinion.."i wish the day i was abused for the first time...i should've turned back,...hit him in the same manner and made him feel that i feel the same pain"
liz...do u feel jahnvi can set an example???
i really do not think so...the cvs and the team which is a male dominated one...will never let her set an example for women...

Sadly by making people idealize characters like Viraj by glorifying him (intentionally or unintentionally) this kind of behavior is exactly what this show is encouraging ... sad but true!!! Read many similar comments by men and even women on FB pages of Life Ok an DSDSB where people defend acts of viraj saying he did it to protect her ... he beat her up to teach her discipline ... this kind of behavior makes me sick. When you make eveil larger than life, glorify it unfortunately you end up encouraging this kind of behavior rather than helping reduce it

As for Sia i do relate to her mostly except few things ... won't a woman be terrified to even go near such a man specially when she took a step and ran away? Here Sia has no problem being near him and even feels bad for him ... whenever i raise this point i am told women do go back ... but I just don't relate to it because what Sia has faced is much worst than domestic violence alone!!!

great post lizzy.👍🏼..
i m glad dat such shows air on tv 2 promote awarness on such issues, nd on d oder hand our show was also thought 2 b d same, but look at d condition now, they r promoting new ways of evilness nd torture, nd even justify it by telling about silly illness ??🥱...No matter wat , why nd hw is Viraaj evil??...d fact is dat he is evil, a destructor, a fear dat has supressed Jhanvi's life, nd he has 2 b removed nd not glorified, he has 2 b fought nd taught a good lesson, nd not given sympathy or justification.

no..
the audience does not want that
had they wanted sia to go back to her abuser...they would've never participated in the bell bajao movement and ask jahnvi to run away...
no woman of today will want that
the fact that wen the 3 victims of domestic violence on the show said that" they wished they had slapped their abusers...anmd made him feel the same pain..." and the fact that it was applauded by loads of young men sitting out there proves that the audience wants a change!

I wish they made this show as any other show without calling it a voice against DV then it won't matter if they glorified viraj or did what ever
