Mr Darcy is one my most favourite literary heros...and he was full of imperfections and contradictions...he was arrogant, proud, rude, downright insulting etc but he was also all man...it can't get worse than telling the woman you love that you do so inspite of yourself, inspite of the fact that her station in life is way beneath yours...and yet, one could never hate him because he was never a puppet, he did and said exactly what he pleased...while he was arrogant and insensitive even ( some of the qualities that Ashu is being accused of), he did whatever he did of his own accord...he never allowed himself to be manipulated...
The reason why one is not able to love Ashu just as much is because he is a weak man...susceptible to emotional blackmail and manipulation and not willing to take a stand on occasion...I know this is what makes him imperfect and human but, as a woman, a strong man always holds greater appeal..
As to why he is not hated, even while he is hellbent on committing harakiri, it is because his love for Nidhi comes through, even beneath his ridiculous behaviour of late...All of the points mentioned in the list are true...but beyond all this, in my opinion, what makes Nidhi, and us, still continue to love him is his unstinting love for Nidhi...something that he has never given up on...
I know enough people reacted badly to Nidhi's decision to dump Ashu owing to parental pressure...Nidhi was not exactly most popular then...you don't like one half of a favourite couple hurting the other...so you react on the hurt person's behalf...earlier, it was a reaction to Ashu's pain and now, it is Nidhi's pain that is evoking this resentment vis a vis Ashu...
So, I love Ashu because of his steadfast love...this is why Nidhi still loves him and puts up with his rubbish too...
Apropos point 3 on loyalty, it is my belief that the house had become a bit of a non-issue...When Ashutosh returned after the house fiasco, he had already shed his OCD vis a vis the house...it had ceased to be the be all and end all of his existence...his love for Nidhi had clearly replaced his obsession with the house...Mallika miscalculated there...somewhere she did not realize that this shift had taken place...regaining the house was supposed to be a means to regain his lost past, his identity, his happiness and so on...but, given that Nidhi was now the most important part of his life, his present and future having outweighed his past, the house held no meaning without Nidhi...the house was no longer his dream...Nidhi was...so what was the point of the house anyway...why would he marry Mallika for it...? He was polite and made all the right noises when Mallika returned to him...it was probably a solace to him...but, forget the house, even Baba's return did not compensate for the loss of Nidhi...technically, he wouldn't even have been disloyal to Nidhi if he had accepted Mallika's proposal...they had broken up after all...and yet, even the thought of giving Nidhi's place to Mallika was unacceptable to him..there I think, KPji's usoolvadi and shareef insaan came to the fore...if you remember his lines, he said he did not want to be a bad husband, lover or friend...so his prinicples were also a guiding influence in making that choice as much as his love for Nidhi...and Mallika could not emotionally blackmail/manipulate him on the house simply because his emotions were now centred on Nidhi...
I think this is reason why Ashutosh, even while being touched that Mallika had sold her house to fulfil his dream, didn't seem particularly overwhelmed...
The house, in my opinion, ceased to be a significant issue after Ashutosh's return post visarjan...but it might still become an issue when Ashutosh realizes that Mallika, in the past, had used his OCD vis a vis the house as a weapon in to hurt Nidhi and her family!
