I have been spoilt rotten by Diya aur Baati Hum. A daily soap presented on a cinematic scale with an awesome soundtrack, a little toy story street,a smashingly interesting house, a cozy room for the lead pair and a balcony that presents many possibilities. Cvs have proved me wrong enough times for me to know not to second guess. I have zigged and they have zagged.
So permit me to zig again.
Sandy has turned into a caricature of her own flawless self. What is all this scampering around from one family member to another. All I heard was Sandy. All I saw was Sandy. She stands just the right distance from Bhabo and Meena. She catches a falling Meena as if she expected that 1 full minute before it happened. She orders Chavi to call the doctor. She sits with Meena and gives her another chance to bail out of a lie. She escorts doctor in and then carries the doctor's bag while escorting her out...I thought that only happened in old black and white movies. She's overjoyed on hearing 'Badhai Ho' from the doc. Goes into happiness overdrive. Lectures Bhabo, a mother of 4, about the joys of motherhood and the need to welcome a new life. Serves everyone sweets and when she finally shared a laddoo with Sur, I really felt that this couple are the old old couple and caretakers of the Rathis.
Is this what Sandy is going to do now? Be the bahu and excel at it? Nothing wrong with that, but if that's the case, tone it down just a tad before people laugh her out of their living rooms. (okay I said I've been spoilt and expect a lot).
The backbone of this story is supposed to be Sandy's success outside the home. I realise that success at home is first necessary. But I ask that CVs don't spend too long basking in this, because we need to get a move on. All her vitality and energy needs to be harnessed properly. She needs to act her age as well. So maybe this S'pore trip, if it ever gets shown, will bring their youth back into focus. There are careers,visions,goals to think about. There's a marriage to work on and take to a stage where they don't feel there's something lacking. SurYa need to be working together as diya and baati. I'm still not seeing that.
Today Sur was standing well away from the action. Observing and reacting. But I didn't get much out of it. So he admires his wife. Who wouldn't after today's performance. She's got everything so neatly in hand, that he can now retire. He looked like a Dadaji himself on that balcony, towel round his neck, taking an age to put foam on his face. Haven't we all seen our grandads do this? And that praise of her and mini lecture was so father-like. I think it was also her posture in the balcony. Crouched down below and talking to him. I just got all these strange vibes.
So I hope CVs freshen them up, remind them that they are still newly-weds.
On a positive note - this episode brought everything back to earth with a thud. Story has been rewound. Meena put in her place for now. Bhabo starting again from scratch with her beendni#1. There was no time for eye locks and shy smiles. Even being uncle and aunty was only accorded a brief laddoo and then it's back to watering plants and being screamed at by Bhabo. I liked that. So superwoman Sandy can pack away her superhero costume and start learning/doing some cooking as well as take an interest in Chotu's education. That should give her just the right amount of things to get connected to Suraj again.
I wait to be surprised. I wait for the zag.
