MAHABHARAT: old and new?

Okay, this might sound an old topic but just wondering if someone can explain why they decided to make another version of the mahabharat serial? Several years back, I remember watching the original by the chopras , which was well done, seemingly well researched and looked to be made with diligent care. Now there seems to be another version airing on satellite with different faces in the character roles with Mandira Bedi as Drauphadi (she ain't that good).... can anyone explain why oh why they decided to remake mahabharat---the same story with different people??----doesn't the story stay the same? a director can only change so many different ways!!!

thanks
