Part Three
Prem laid in bed staring up at the ceiling pondering. It was strange to have so many people gone at one time out of the house. He could feel a certain loneliness lingering around in the atmosphere. He thought he would be spending more time with his parents but even they had various events and social occasions they were attending leaving only him and Heer alone most of the time. He wasn't objecting to the time alone but there was just something missing with a house usually filled with people suddenly becoming empty. He felt the comforter move and the bed pressure change and turned his head to see that Heer had moved to her side and was sleeping towards him. A gentle smile appeared on his face at the way she was sleeping; peaceful and without a care in the world. His eyes flexed as he recalled what his sister had said to him on the FaceTime call. They should go out and have fun. But where would he take her? What would they do? They never really went out on a date before. His eyes widened at the thought as he realized if they did do something it would be their first official date alone and away from the family. His eyebrows furrowed as his mind couldn't shake the feeling of what would happen if he took her out somewhere and was reminded of Sanjana. What would he do? It wasn't right to be thinking about someone else while he was out with Heer even though Sanjana had been his first wife. But he couldn't control his mind if it wandered off to some memory. A sudden twisting nausea in the pit of his stomach appeared as a new thought entered. What if Heer thought about Anurag while she was with him? His eyes darkened at that conclusion and he felt uneasy again for thinking of such things like a date. "Maybe she doesn't want to go out with me..." Prem softly murmured to himself. "Do I want to go out with her?"
"Mmm?"
Prem glanced over at Heer and panicked that she had heard everything that he had been contemplating. "Sleep well," he gently said when he saw that her eyes were still closed.
"Okay," she mumbled back. "Go to bed Prem." She lazily moved her hand and softly pushed his arm trying to coax him to sleep.
"I am," he replied. A grin formed on his face seeing the way her lips were turning pouty.
"Lair," she replied with her eyes still closed.
"You need to go to bed," he teased back.
"I would if someone would sleep," Heer answered.
"Night," Prem replied and laid very still hoping to convince her that he was sleeping. A few seconds later, she was slumbering peacefully again. Prem sighed as he went back to thinking about their relationship once more. He turned to his side so he was facing Heer and watched as she slept. She was probably dreaming about food. He had heard her before in the middle of the night ordering Indian food in her sleep. He found it to be quite hilarious. There were times he would hear her complaining about not receiving enough pasta or something or another. Other times she would be making happy noises especially if it concerned ice cream. He had seen the wide grin on her face as she murmured how awesome the chocolate ice cream was. She was quite the foodie in real life. Her sister, Meher was one as well so he mused that it was a family trait. He on the other hand never thought too much about food. But he noticed how his tastes were getting more developed ever since she came to the house. On the weekends her sister would sometimes come over and the two siblings along with his sister Kulraj would experiment in the kitchen. Sometimes things turned out successful other times they had to call for pizza. When the family went out to eat she would always be the first to try a new dish on the menu and then freely offer a sampling to everyone in the family. She was always so giving like that. He could understand why his family loved her so much. She never thought twice about giving her time or attention to anyone.
Prem gently watched as she slept taking note of how delicate her eyelashes were, the soft curve of her face, the cute round tip of her nose, and her soft lips. His eyes lingered on her wondering what it would have been liked to have known her before everything that had happened to them. There were times when he could see sadness in her eyes and sense this unknowing pain. It was something he found himself identifying with; this ache in the heart that someone you had loved was no longer with you anymore. Times like those he knew to give her space. He tried his own ways to comfort her by making sure his mother cooked one of her favorite dishes for dinner or send his brother Preet to the grocery store to pick up chocolate ice cream. He had always wanted to let her know that he was there for her but he never could figure out the way to express it to her. He didn't want to intrude and make her feel like he was trying to replace Anurag. He didn't want to make her feel that she had to forget him because they were now married. He understood how precious those memories of a loved one were. He cherished the ones he had with Sanjana and held them close to his heart.
Prem held his breath when he saw Heer's hand clutch the covers and her head snuggle into her pillow. He was afraid she was going to wake up and catch him staring at her. When she settled back into a restful sleep he decided it was really time for him to go to bed. He closed his eyes and let his mind go blank. It wasn't long before he drifted off into a deep slumber.
Heer walked through the large walnut colored double doors entering the office area of the hotel. The receptionist Sandhya was on the phone taking down a message. She nodded her head acknowledging Heer's presence and motioned with her hand that Prem was in his office. Heer mouthed a silent thank you and walked towards Prem's office. The door was closed so she gently knocked before attempting to open it. She heard his voice giving permission to come in so she entered the room. It was like any normal office; a sturdy desk, a comfortable leather chair, a small filing cabinet, and wooden shelves lining one side of the walls. She had been to his office many times and was familiar with how he decorated. His desk had a few family photos. The walls he hung his diplomas and certificates of achievements. His awards he placed on the shelves.
"Hey," Prem greeted as he looked up from his desk. "Everything okay?"
"Yes," Heer answered. She noted the surprised tone in his voice and added, "You texted me."
"I did?" Prem inquired with confusion.
"You told me to come to the office." Prem reached for his cell phone that was resting on his cell phone stand and started to inspect his outgoing messages. "You didn't text me?"
"I don't remember doing that," he replied scratching the back of his head. "And I don't see an outgoing message either."
"Then why do I have a message from you?" Heer asked showing him the message she had received on her phone. "It says it's from you. The phone number and name is pulling from the address book. No one else is associated with your name."
"I don't know. This is so weird," Prem said looking at her phone.
They were interrupted by Lalit as he entered the room. He had broad smile on his face. "Ah, you're here," he greeted. He took two tickets out of the front pocket of his shirt and handed them to Heer. "You'll need these."
"Bauji?" Prem inquired with his eyebrows furrowed.
"Two tickets to the movies. You mother apparently won some lottery at one of the clubs she attends. Two movie tickets to any Regal Cinemas," Lalit explained. "You know your mother and I don't go to the Western cinemas that much. We won't be using them so instead of letting them go to waste we thought you two should have them."
"So that text was from you?" Heer asked.
Lalit beamed a proud smile. "I figure a text from your husband's phone would be less alarming than one from me." He gave a hearty laugh at the reactions on his son and daughter-in-law's faces. "Don't be so alarmed. I erased the outgoing message from your phone son," looking at his son, "Prem, take Heer out to the movies. There isn't much work left to do today. The project proposal is complete and the presentation will be done next week. Go and enjoy the rest of the day. You have three days left before Kulraj comes home with the kids. I think it's quite appropriate for you two to have a little fun for yourselves before everyone comes back."
"Oh...uh, ji Bauji," Prem replied nervously. He had been fretting for the last two days on how to or even if he should ask Heer out on a date and somehow his father had managed to arrange a date for them. He turned towards Heer wanting to know her reaction to all of this. She simply smiled and nodded her head. "Okay Bauji."
"Let me get my jacket and we can go," Prem said.
Lalit waved as he watched his son and daughter-in-law leave the office together. His heart swelled with warmth at seeing them together. "Nice couple," he murmured to himself. He stood there for a moment smiling at their retreating figures before he walked back to his office to make a few more business calls.
Heer followed Prem as they walked towards theater room number 12. He was holding the large popcorn while she held the two small sized drinks. She had to laugh at the fact that the concession stand actually called them a size small. They were huge and if it weren't for the cardboard cup holder the concession stand clerk had given her she would never have been able to carry the two. She paused in her steps as she saw Prem open the door to the theater and hold it for her to enter in first. She gave a tiny appreciative smile and walked in. She walked forward a little before turning around to make sure Prem was following behind her. She saw that he had held the door open for two teenage girls to enter. He was such a gentleman she thought to herself. Heer waited for him to come through the doors before she continued walking up the ramp to where the seats where. "Where do you want to sit?" Heer inquired. "The back, middle, or front?"
"Let's sit in the middle," Prem replied. "We have perfect timing," looking around the theater, "no one is here yet."
"You think it's going to fill up?"
"I don't know. This movie has been out for about two weeks now. I heard some really good reviews about this movie. So, I guess we will just have to see," Prem answered.
They soon settled into their seats. Their drinks rested comfortably in the seat holders while Prem held the large tub of popcorn in his lap. Heer took a handful and started munching away. "This movie will end around 7:00 or so?"
"Yeah, I think so," Prem replied. "Maybe we should go out to eat dinner." His eyebrows arched as he realized what he had just asked. But then quickly reasoned to himself that he had said it naturally with no anterior motive.
"Prem? You okay?"
He looked up and saw that Heer was staring at him with a worried expression on her face. "Yeah," he answered.
"I'm fine with it. But Ma made that huge pot of curry last night."
"So we should go home then," Prem said.
"I think it may be a good idea. Maybe next time," Heer reassured. She had sensed a feeling of disappointment in his reply and it made her sad that she had turned down his idea.
Prem glanced up towards the screen as the lights dimmed even lower placing the room into darkness except for the illumination coming from the trailer that was about to run. "Movies starting," he softly whispered. Heer turned her attention to the large screen and prepared herself to be swept away for the next two hours.
Gayatri made herself comfortable on the couch and turned on the TV. She took a relaxing sip of chai from her tea cup and sighed, "Mmm...good tea if I must say so myself." Her peaceful interlude was unfortunately interrupted by the house phone. She placed her tea cup down and grabbed the cordless phone on the side table answering, "Hello?"
"Hi Ma!"
"Preet Beta, how are you doing? You're calling a bit early," Gayatri replied.
"I can't make a phone call home without you wondering what I want?" She chuckled hearing the pout in his voice. "I want to talk to you and Bauji and Bhabhi and Prem Bhaiya. Is that a crime?"
"That's not a crime but you know it is early and your Bauji has not come home yet," Gayatri replied. "What do you want Beta?"
"Is Heer Bhabhi around?"
"No, she went with your Bhaiya to the movies," Gayatri answered.
"They went to the movies?" then muttering to himself happily, "This is better than I thought."
"What is better than you thought?"
"Nothing Ma," Preet innocently replied.
"What plan do you have going on? Don't lie. You're not going to include your mother in on this? Eh, the shame of it." Gayatri heard some rustling in the background and the next voice she heard was a light cheery feminine one. "Aap Kasie Ho Aunty?" She grinned at hearing the greeting. "I'm fine, Meher. What are you doing in New York?"
"It was something spontaneous my friends and I decided to do. We were already visiting Vermont and we just decided to drive up to New York for a few days," she explained. "So Heer Didi went out with Jiju to the movies? This is so exciting! But how did this happen?"
"I won some movie tickets to the cinemas but Uncle and I don't usually watch Western movies so I told Uncle to give them to Prem and Heer...make them go watch a movie," Gayatri said.
"Look at that," she heard Meher squealed to Preet. "Your parents just helped your plan without even knowing it." She heard some more muffled talking and then Meher's voice on the line again. "Sorry Aunty. I got a little too excited."
"So, this plan Preet has? Anything to do with Kulraj and Kiran taking the kids away?" Gayatri inquired venturing a guess.
"We got you on speaker phone Ma. And that is correct," Preet answered.
"I knew it!" Gayatri replied happily. "So, tell Ma what she can do to help."
Preet chuckled, "You're the best Ma."
Gayatri beamed a smile and then listened carefully at what her son was telling her. After a few minutes of discussing things they ironed out a plan that made both parties happy. "I'll speak with Bauji about everything. I'll keep an eye on things here."
"Thanks Ma." Gayatri softly laughed when she heard her son and Meher start to bicker on the phone. "You owe me dinner now."
"What do you mean I owe you dinner?" Meher replied with confusion in her voice.
"Who is bringing your Jiju and Didi closer together? Me. So, that naturally means an award of some sort," Preet explained.
"An award? As if! You are not the sole person working on this mission," Meher quipped back.
"Who's plan is it?"
"That doesn't matter," Meher replied.
"Who's plan is it?" Preet repeated.
"Kulraj Di is helping."
"Who's plan is it?" raising his voice higher.
"Aunty and Uncle..your parents are---"
"But who's plan is it?" Preet cut in. "Who? Tell me who? Me, that's who. And you can't deny that," Preet asserted.
Meher sighed, "You'll eat me out of the budget I have for myself on this trip."
"I don't care...you have to feed me."
"You don't care? How am I suppose to go home then? Are you going to explain to my parents and Heer Didi why I'm still in New York homeless?" Meher argued back.
"You don't even live in New York. How can you be homeless in New York? Your friends are driving back to Vermont they will take you with them. And you already booked your flight so you have a ticket to fly home. Your parents pay for your rent. And if you are hungry you can always come over to my house," Preet replied.
"You're just freely offering up your Mom's time and money to feed an extra mouth?"
"Gosh, you're so dramatic sometimes," Preet sighed. "Nothing like your sister. She's the most level headed person...I sometimes wonder how you can be her sister."
"What!?"
Gayatri couldn't help but laugh out loud making the two youngsters pause. They were slightly embarrassed that they were having such a free conversation in front of an adult. "Okay you two don't get so worked up over this. Meher you are always welcomed at our house. And Preet, do not make her pay for your dinner. I know how you can eat. Unless of course, Meher you take him to a buffet...that should be easier on your wallet," chuckling lightly, "Well, it is getting late and I have some things to do."
"Okay Ma. Take care. I'll talk to you soon."
"Stay out of trouble up there," Gayatri warned.
"You too? Kul Di said the same thing to me," Preet protested.
"Meher please keep an eye on him," Gayatri requested.
"I will Aunty don't worry."
"This is so unfair," Preet grumbled.
"Tell Uncle I said hello. Bye Aunty," Meher said.
"I will. Goodbye," Gayatri replied and then hung up the phone with a pleased smile on her face.
Heer smiled to herself as she stared at the large tub of popcorn in her lap. She knew there wasn't any way they could have finished it but she understood why Prem had gotten it anyway. His mother loved popcorn. There was a fair amount left and they were bringing it home so his mother could have some. She glanced to her side and gently stared at her husband's profile. He seemed to be in good spirits. She recalled how he had laughed in the movie during the funny moments in the movie. It was refreshing to hear him sound so carefree. He looked cute when he laughed. She continued to study Prem's profile noting his long eyelashes, his strong and noble nose, and his beautifully angled chin. The light facial stubble around his mouth made him look handsome. Heer paused in her thoughts as she realized during the past two years of their marriage she had never really given much thought to his appearance until now. She was married to a good looking guy. She quickly diverted her eyes away when she sensed that he was turning his head towards her direction.
Prem looked to his right and saw that Heer was staring out the passenger side window. His brows knitted in confusion as he could have sworn she was looking at him or at least in his direction. He wanted to know if there was something she wanted. His eyes shifted back towards the roadway as he continued to drive them home. He felt a sudden cold sweat form along his backside and wondered to himself if she really had been staring at him. What did that mean? Was there something on his face? He started to cautiously rub the side of his face and his nose hoping to brush off whatever it was that might have been there. His mind started wandering again and he paused at another thought that sent his heart pounding. Was it possible she found him attractive? He mulled over that revelation in his mind and found himself thinking about her and her physical appearance. She was an attractive female. He had seen other men sneak peeks at her before when they were out. He would usually end up giving them a look making them shy away from looking at her again like that. Besides the physical appearance she was also a very caring, personable, and intelligent person. And that made her even more attractive. Her personality was something he had been attracted to from the beginning. His thoughts shifted away from this subject when he pulled the car into the driveway of the Juneja Estate.
Heer waited patiently as the garage door lifted and Prem eased the car into its parking space. They both got out and walked to the back entrance. They entered through the door and walked down the hallway into the kitchen. "Ma, we're home," Prem announced.
Heer placed the tub of popcorn on the counter and went to look for a container to place it into. A few seconds later Prem came walking back into the kitchen with a confused expression etched on his face. "What's the matter?" Heer inquired.
"They aren't here," Prem replied holding up a note in his hands.
"They went out?"
"They said they went to Sanchita Aunty's place and would most likely spend the night there," Prem replied.
"Sanchita Aunty?" Heer inquired. "She's the one with the rose garden right? Her son is an engineer in Dallas? He had that really bad divorce. His wife practically took everything from him and she's the one who had the affair. But he won custody of their daughter."
"Yeah. She's the one. Her husband recently retired. He just bought a boat house. I think that is where they went," Prem replied. "Ma and Bauji have been going out and visiting a lot of their friends recently."
"They probably haven't visited them for awhile now. Bauji is pretty busy at the office. Sometimes it's nice to catch up with old friends," Heer explained.
"Yeah, I guess so. So, when do you want to have dinner?"
"Not for awhile. I'm kind of full from the popcorn. How about 8:30? That's not too late for you is it?" Heer asked.
"I was actually thinking of 9:00," Prem chuckled. "I'm sort of full myself."
"So you want to eat at 9:00?"
"Let's see how we feel around 8:30 and then decide from there," Prem replied.
Heer nodded her head in agreement and then started working on moving the movie popcorn from the tub to a container with a lid. "Prem," she berated as she saw him take a few kernels into his hand. "I thought you were full?"
"I can't help it," he replied as he munched on the popcorn. "It's kind of addicting."
"Stop," she said as she playfully slapped his hand away from the popcorn. "How are you going to have dinner if you keep eating the popcorn?"
"Okay. Last bite," Prem said with a smirk as he quickly grabbed a handful of popcorn and backed away from the counter so she couldn't stop him.
Heer giggled at his actions and shook her head sighing in amusement. "What am I going to do with you?" Prem just shrugged his shoulders and smiled as he ate his popcorn.
Prem carried a small serving tray with two cups of cappuccino walking towards the back patio. Dinner had been pleasant; in fact the entire evening up to this point had been wonderful. They had sat in front of the TV and watched some mindless comedic shows before dinner. During dinner they turned to the Bollywood music channel to see what new songs were out and if there were any new movies they wanted to watch. Prem was really enjoying the fact that none of the other family members were home to bother them. He was truly appreciating the bonding time he was having with his wife. Prem slide the sliding glass door open and stepped out onto the patio. Heer was sitting at one of the tables that did not have the shade umbrella attached to it. "Your cappuccino signora," he greeted.
"Thank you signore," Heer replied with a giggle.
Prem handed the cappuccino to her and then placed the tray down before he sat down at the table. He glanced up at the sky and murmured, "It looks really dark. Is it going to rain tonight?"
"I'm not sure. But this breeze feels really nice," Heer said and then closed her eyes letting herself enjoy the gently wind blowing their way. Prem found himself unable to take his gaze away from her. She looked so beautiful sitting there with her eyes clothes and her hair flowing softly in the air. He could hear his heart thumping loudly in his chest and all he wanted to do was to freeze frame this moment forever. He was quickly returned to reality when he heard rumbling in the distance.
"It's going to rain," he declared. "Maybe we should go in."
"It hasn't start yet," Heer replied. "Nothing to worry about."
The sky rattled again making Prem frown. "Let's go before we get wet." He stood up ready to leave but was prevented by a soft hand on his arm. He was surprised to feel her try to pull him back down. He stared down at her hand unable to move.
"Rain is just water Prem," Heer replied. She looked up and caught this unexplainable emotion emoting from his eyes and turned suddenly silent. The two remained in their eye lock for some time until Prem realized he was staring at her for far too long. He obediently sat back down causing Heer to lift her hand from his arm.
They both nervously sipped their cappuccinos and remained mute. Neither one really knew what to say. They didn't know what the other one was thinking but they could feel something stirring in the atmosphere. They just couldn't comprehend what it was that was trying to be defined between them. Prem looked up at the sky when he felt something drop against his cheek. It was a raindrop. He was sure of it. He waited for another one to fall and sure enough it came. Soon the sporadic drops began to fall steadily. The rhythm was increasing and it was coming down faster and harder. He immediately got up from the table and ran back towards the area of the patio that was covered. He expected to see Heer with him but when he turned to his side she wasn't there. He glanced back and saw that Heer was standing in the middle of the backyard with her palms opened letting herself get soaked in the rain. "Heer!" he called. He saw her grin and motion with her hands for him to join her. He shook his head negatively and motioned to her to come back into the house.
Heer ignored his request and looked back up at the sky enjoying the rain. Prem sighed and walked back out. He marched over to her and pulled her arm trying to convince her that she needed to go back into the house. "Heer," he simply stated.
"It's just water Prem," she replied with a grin. She raised her arm up and cupped some of the falling streams into her hands and splashed them onto him. She laughed at his surprised reaction and repeated, "It's just water."
Prem watched with awe as she began to twirl around the yard like a little girl. He was simply captivated by her innocence. His eyes widen when he saw her lose her balance and he quickly reached out to stop her from falling down. He felt her weight in his arms and he looked down to see if she was all right. His chest tightened as her head lifted upward and he saw her almond shaped eyes staring back at him. He felt completely helpless. He could barely register what was happening. But somehow he managed to steady her and lift her upright again. He swallowed hard as he noted how close their faces where. His hands were still on her waist while her hands were still resting against his chest. The rain water was soaking his green t-shirt through and through making it cling tightly to his broad and muscular chest. Normally he would have been shivering by now, but the gentle pressure of Heer's hands on him and the close proximity of their bodies was inciting a burning sensation within him. He was finding it hard to ignore as his eyes fell from Heer's gaze and landed on her soft pink lips. There was this sudden urgency to crush his lips against hers and let her feel what he was feeling for her at this very moment. He moved closer but then stopped himself short of making full contact. He had felt her jerk back in alarm at his sudden action and he realized he was probably scaring her. That was the last thing he wanted to do. He wanted her to feel comfortable with him. So he just paused and gently let their noses touch. He could tell that they both had their eyes closes. He could sense that their breathing was in pace; a slow but hurried pace caused by the rush of excitement earlier and the curiosity of what was to come next.
Prem swallowed nervously and delicately brushed the tip of his nose against her nose. He cautiously tilted his head testing to see how receptive she was to the idea of them sharing a kiss. When she didn't pull away he leaned forward to seal his lips with hers. Unfortunately, he was rudely awakened when he felt her pull back and sneeze into his shoulder. Prem's eyes popped open and he glanced towards his right shoulder where Heer was hiding herself. "Let's go inside and get warm," he simple stated.
Heer shyly looked down feeling embarrassed that she had ruined the moment. She glanced towards her left and saw Prem's hand holding her hand taking her with him back towards the house. His palms felt soft and tender. Not as rough as she thought they would be. Once back inside the house Prem let go of her hand and went to close the sliding glass door. Heer fidgeted nearby not sure what to do. As Prem turned around they heard a sudden pop and the slow hissing of the electricity dying out. "Really?" he grumbled as he rubbed his forehead with his hand. "The electricity had to go out now?"
"The matches are in the kitchen," Heer softly advised. "And a flashlight is there too."
"I'll go check out the utility closet," Prem replied.
Heer listened to the sizzle as the tip of the match head caught fire. The little flame danced in the darkness bringing with it a calming glow and warmth. Heer placed the match over the wick of the candle and patiently waited for it to catch. She then blew the match out sending into the air a fragrant smokiness. She stood back admiring the soft glow the large candle in the kitchen was emitting. She could also detect the gentle scent of fresh cut lemons. Heer picked up her small flashlight and walked into the living room with the match box so she could light the decorative candle tree on the coffee table.
"Well, we didn't have a power surge," Prem said as he entered the room. "I checked outside and it looks like the whole neighborhood is without power."
Heer blew her match out and frowned. "I wonder how long it will last."
"Don't know." His nose crinkled a bit before he let out a loud sneeze.
"We should get out of our wet clothes and dry off," Heer suggested.
Prem nodded his head and followed her up the stairs to their bedroom. His eyes secretly followed her as she went about lighting the decorative candles in their room. She soon disappeared into the bathroom to light the few in there as well. Prem looked around him and mused how romantic the atmosphere in their bedroom had become because of the lit candles. He remembered when Heer had bought the candle holders and started decorating the room with them. They had only been used during the day when Heer felt like bringing in the scent of gardenias into their room. The bathroom was set up with lilac blossoms. He chuckled softly to himself that their room sometimes smelled like a botanical garden. He ran his hand through his wet locks and tossed them a bit trying to shake the excess water out. He turned when he sensed the presence of his wife. She was holding a towel for him to take. His eyes looked with curiosity as to why she was avoiding eye contact with him.
"You can go take a shower first," Heer softly suggested.
Prem's eyebrows arched and he looked down at himself realizing that he was half dressed. In his musing he had automatically started to undress himself so he could dry off and get into some clean clothes. His green shirt laid slumped on the bed while the button to his jeans was opened. "It's okay you go first," Prem replied. "With the electricity out there is probably enough hot water for one person."
Heer's eyes went wide at his statement and felt stupid that she hadn't thought about the hot water situation. It wasn't fair to him for her to use all the hot water up especially since they didn't know how long this black out was going to last. "I forgot about that. It's okay. I won't take a shower."
"What do you mean you won't take a shower?" Prem inquired.
"I'll use all the hot water up and that's just not fair to you," Heer explained.
"You don't have to worry about me."
"Prem, take your towel," Heer instructed.
"No, not until you agree to take a shower. I don't want you to catch a cold," Prem insisted.
"I'll be fine," Heer replied and tossed the towel onto his shoulder. She turned around and walked towards the dresser to pull out some clean pajamas to slip into. "I'll go change inside the bathroom," she announced as she closed the drawer and started heading towards the bathroom. Prem frowned at what she was doing and grabbed her arm pulling her back. Heer immediately turned around with a frustrated look wondering what he wanted.
"No," Prem simply stated annoyed at her stubbornness. Heer twisted her wrist around hoping he would let go but he continued to firmly hold onto her. She lifted her gaze and met his deep brown eyes. She inhaled sharply at the intensity he was displaying through them. He was upset with her. But she soon saw his eyes soften into regret for being too forceful with her. The pressure around her wrist lessened and he murmured an apologetic, "I'm sorry," as he let go.
Heer saw a glimmer of sadness in his eyes as he casted his head downward ashamed that he had reacted that way. That he had somehow caused her some pain. "It's okay," she reassured. Prem lifted his head in wonder when he felt the gentle touch of her hand on his arm. Heer felt an overwhelming sense of dejavu as the atmosphere was exactly like what they had experienced in the rain. There was this slow burning desire to come closer to one another and feel each other's presence.
She watched Prem step closer and raise his hand up. She felt him tenderly tucking a few strands of her hair away from her face. His fingers rested in her damp tresses while his thumb caressed her cheek. Heer tried to maintain control of how fast her heart was beating by taking short breaths. She was nervous, excited, and confused all at the same time. She didn't know what was going to happen next and how far things were going to go this time. Did she want to know? Was she prepared for the consequences?
Prem continued to gaze at Heer marveling at how soft her skin was. He really didn't know what he was doing. It was like he was outside of himself. He had no control of his body. It was doing things on its own accord as his mind was devoid of any real thought. It just wanted to touch, to see, to hear, and to taste. His eyes flexed as he started to register this sudden passion growing inside of him. He moved forward and leaned inward wanting nothing more than to make her his.
Heer had seen the spark of desire flash in his brown eyes before he descended upon her. His lips captured her mouth with such fervor that she stood there mute for a few seconds unable to comprehend what was happening. His hands were cupping her cheeks as he asserted his urgency to have her lips dance with his. Heer slowly started to respond to his advances and loosened her mouth as her eyes closed. She was being drawn inward by the small flame that had started. Her body gasped as their tongues greeted each other for the first time. She felt herself involuntarily move closer towards him; her hands resting on the side of his waist while her fingers toyed with the loops of his jeans.
Prem slowly pulled away trying to keep himself in check. He knew he needed to slow down and have them ease into this; whatever this was turning into. So he rested his forehead against hers and paused. He could hear their breaths mingling as both were trying to compose their breathing. After a few minutes Prem lifted his head and looked at Heer to gauge her reaction. She just gazed back at him wondering what he was thinking. Wondering if he was feeling the same way; wondering if the gentle stirrings they had felt in their hearts before was what they had hoped for but could not admit to because of the guilt they would feel towards their once significant others. Prem took Heer's hand into his and brought it towards him. He was compelled by some unknown force to continue this display of affection. He tenderly kissed her wrist as an apology for having held it so roughly a few minute ago. His eyes lifted to see her beautiful hazel eyes gazing back at him. There was a hint of longing and sadness in them making him want to comfort her. He was surprised when he felt her soft lips on his but the feeling soon mellowed as he closed his eyes enjoying her initiation. The kissing was sweet and gentle at first but as their mouths collided and adjusted the pace started to slowly turn towards a sultry and passionate fashion. Prem shivered in delight as Heer's hands touched his shoulders and moved upward around his neck. As her fingers curved into his hair he felt himself sway; his knees were growing weak. He rested his hands around her waist and pulled her closer to maintain balance. His body temperature was rising and his heart was pounding loudly in his chest. Lustful desires and carnal cravings were spilling outward as his body could no longer hide what it wanted. It could no longer hold back with her in his arms.
Heer breathed deeply as she felt Prem's mouth wander away and began caressing her neck. She gripped his hair and let out a satisfying moan of acceptance. The intensity of the moment was beyond anything she had ever felt. The small flame that had started in the beginning of the night was now burning into a raging fire. The unexplainable hungry in the air needed to be satisfied. Heer felt herself begin swept up into Prem's arms and carried towards their bed. She shyly looked at him seeing for the first time this need, this want, this lust, this desire, and this love for her shining brightly in his eyes. There were times she thought she had seen a faint flicker of feelings for her but he was usually quick to mask them up. Her fondness and feelings for him had been hidden away as well. She had been afraid to explore the possibility of a loving relationship with him because of everything they had experienced in their past. But tonight all the barriers that had been built between them were crumbling down. Tonight two hearts were finally going to become one.
