Certainly; parents and siblings and relatives do not leave the scene after marriage; but they usually become support characters.
If the spouse in the marriage pays more attention to any of these characters at the expense of his/her partner, the relationship suffers.
I am not saying that one forgets or cuts off from the old to focus on the new; but in any relationship of the partner/spouse nature, they have to be the most important person in each other's life. In any event; i.e. that this is the person with whom one will grow old. There won't be parents or siblings around; only this partner.
Parents and siblings have their own relationships on which their focus ought to be, as should one's on one's own relationship.

Sigh!
Usually does not happen, though

P.S. As far as I am aware, there is a legal basis for 'divorcing' parents/siblings, etc. (termination of parental/sibling rights - its as if they never existed for you)

Yes, you can disown from property rights, but the only way to really severe would mean wiping your own existence too. Hard to imagine, lol.

I know what you mean about life partners. I see the importance too and value it in the romantic sense. I just don't like it when men or women make it a competition with the mother-in-law. Yes, there will be tension but both need to respect each other's importance in their partner's life. What I don't understand is when say a wife tells the guy to choose between her or the mother. It just doesn't happen. One maybe able to take the guy away from the family but if he was a good family life, it will also kill his soul. He has known that family since his birth, what are the chances that he really can value a spouse he met in his 20s or 30s over someone they have known since the moment of their existence? Guess I am being philosophical about it, but we only go to our graves alone.

Aha! But that is the crux of it, isn't it?!

If partners were truly in love, one would not ask the other to choose.
Each would strive to make the other happy.

Regarding valuing someone as an adult versus one whom one has known since birth - it happens, because as adults our viewpoints, our thinking, our lifestyle, even our tastes change; especially if we leave the 'nest' and seek out our own fortunes.

Distance does provide a different lens; and unfortunately, one does not always get the rosy picture in looking back. Those whom we idolize when young are revealed for what they are: all too flawed and all too human.
This only makes us love them more; but not blindly anymore.

Then we find someone with whom the new thoughts/lifestyle/thinking are compatible and feel that undefinable spark.
With them, it, too, is not blind love, but a more sustaining love. One ends up loving them more (especially if they are worthy in one's own eyes), because unlike the older relations, this was choice.

This is silly. Why even create competition? They are two different types of love. You shouldn't have to compare or choose.

this is a difficult to answer because the type of love he has for both are different...if Arnav believed Khushi to be innocent, he'd give his life for her...bcause he loves her a lot...so i would say equally!! :)

Yup, you wouldn't do that to someone if you really loved them. That is what it boils down to.
