In the 90s serials like Shanti and swabhiman on doordarshan were very progressive for their times...they were better than many other cables channel serial...
Swabhiman was based on a uber rich page 3 family and after some time It was difficult to track who married whom..how many marriage a character had and who was having affair with whom 😆😆😆
None of the current serial have that class...I liked sony's Rishta.com, Mahi ve and khottey sikkey they were classy...Hope they have a 2nd season of them

The main problem is that just bcoz a certain concept clicked, 12 years back, we are still churning out the same old stuff. Kyunki at that time clicked bcoz we had never seen anything of that scale & magnitude on television before. When Kyunki started off, it was innocent & real enough. Savita was scheming but not really very vampish. When Ekta brought back Mihir from the dead...that was the start of Kyunki's downfall.

And Indian television never got over Kyunki. Even today, the shows we see look like remakes of the same old stuff. My reaction to Ekta is always ambivalent...it is she who largely gave television its status today...she gave me my Rishabh Bajaj😳...but she also did irreparable & irrevocable damage to the creativity & overall cultural psych of a whole generation.

Having said that, it IS out fault that we still see such shows. Since viewers tolerate sub-standard stuff, the makers are not forced to give any better. I agree with the TM...90's shows were really much better...Hasratein, Saans, Palchin, Tanha, hip Hip Hurray...and since they used to air only once a week the makers didn't have to resort to unnecessary drama.

How many of you'll have seen Pakistani shows like Dhoop Kinarey, Tanhayian, Raat? And then when I see KTLK, it makes me want to puke to see the way Dhoop Kinarey has been butchered😡 If I had been part of Dhoop Kinarey team, I would have sued Ranjan Shahi for brutally raping such a wonderful show.

But, IMO we cannot blame the joint family system as a whole. It is the way the system is being portrayed which is wrong. Whether joint families, or nuclear families...both are as bad & as good as the people operating within that system. I have lived in a joint family system (when my grand parents were alive), then in a nuclear family (with my parents) and now again in a joint family (since my bro & bhabhi stay with us). And my experience of each time has been very good. there are good & bad points in both...its upto us & our family members to make the system work for us

Once you see pakistani serials specially Dhoop Kinarey, they have the class and elegance of some of the Jane Austen plays on BBC, our shows specially of today - seems really really bad and shameful.

W had pretty good shows, with classy sarees n dress sense and extremely classy home decor and dialogues that weren't OTT and cameras that didn't want to make your head spin n give u nausea.

Now most channels will repeat a climactic scene three times and spin the camera and the background music comes to the foreground and blares and all in all, I just have to reach for the "mute" button ! Plus the worst is - they in a bid to get the audience to watch them will build a suspense but then air it even b4 the show is air via SBS etc to make sure people know what to expect - I feel so cheated !!

The time n pace and suspense you need to build a show gradually and let it seep into the audience's mind - is just not there in a 5 day weekly episode. Those shows lasted longer and stayed in our minds coz the team had a whole week to deliver a classy 1 hr show to us.

Now - every set has the same richy rich decor with lots of flashy curtains and wall effects and women dressed up all the time like they just got married !!! It is really depressing - like someone forced to smile wide from the morning till night.

It seems a little hopeless to build in class in this format unless we have some really classy teams and am happy to say "Na bole Tum" really delivers on all these fronts. There r good shows now too, just very few and far between

Another point is that shows only depict stereotypes. I mean, why can't they show normal people? Gujaratis don't spend their life making theplas & khakaras, Punjabis don't break into a bhangra every now & then, and Maharashtrians do NOT wear such a HUGE nose ring & keep saying 'issha' all the while!!!!!!!!!

I am a maharashtrain so I can only comment on that culture...but really, hardly anyone wears a nine yards sari & bigger-than-your-nose nose ring these days like Kunda tai was shown to be.

I totally agree with you. Some of the serials like balika vadhu and Diya bati are trying a bit but its not enough. its high time the production houses realize they have a moral duty to the society.

But you mentioned about the north East of India and i know for a fact that the state of Meghalaya is Matriarcal---wouldn't it be good if we get serial from them.
Mizoram has one of the highest literacy.
But sadly when these girls come to Delhi to study they are harrassed to no ends. Isn't this shameful in Modern India?
We need shows that is modern not in dress but in thought.
