RESHMA - ENCORE

Ashqaan di gali …as the melodious voice wafts through the hall, there's a sudden silence. For world-renowned Pakistan folk singer Reshma it's been a Lambi judai from Bollywood and after almost two decades, fans are welcoming her back with open arms. The Lahore-based folk singer Reshma was in Delhi recently for the release of the film Woh Tera Naam Tha in which she has sung the hummable Ashqaan di gali. Perhaps a measure of her popularity can be gauged from the fact that when she made her entry at the press conference, she received a standing applause from the usually cynical journalists. Even after decades her luminous voice remains the same. It still grabs your attention the way it did years ago.

Excerpts from an exclusive interview with Avinash Kalla

How did you feel receiving a standing ovation from journalists?

R - The sound of the applause shows not just the love that people in India have for me but it also is proof of the cultural ties that bind our two countries. It is an honour for any artiste to receive such admiration. I am indebted to all my well-wishers who keep blessing me and like my voice and singing.

It has been over two decades since you sang Lambi judaai for Subhash Ghai's film Hero. Do you think a lot has changed in the Hindi film industry?

R - Many times change signifies progress. Yes a lot has changed and a lot hasn't changed. Someone told me the other day that my voice hasn't changed. I am thankful to Allah for that. [Laughs] But I find it hoarse and heavy. I sometimes wonder what people find in my 'bulldozer' aawaz.

You are in India on a month-long tour. What else have you been doing?

R - I was invited to perform at a function organised by Gaj Singh at his beautiful palace in Jodhpur. It was for the first time perhaps that there was no room even to stand. Now I am looking forward to a visit to my native place, Bikaner where I have a musical performance as well. I will try and go to Ajmer Sharif as well.

How does it feel to be loved and admired in India?

R - Dono desh mere do jahaan hai [India and Pakistan are my two worlds]. I was born in one country and live in another. There is no difference among people on both sides of the border. Our traditions, culture and expressions are the same. People in India are like my brothers and sisters who shower me with the same love and respect that I get from the people of Pakistan.

How did you decide to sing in a Bollywood film after almost twenty years?

R - I have sung whenever I am given a chance. The director of Who Tera Naam Tha, Kuku Kohli came to meet me in London where I had a concert. He asked me if I would sing in his film and I told him, 'When you have travelled all the way to invite me with so much affection how can I say no.' That's how I am back singing in a Hindustani film.

Why was the song recorded in Dubai?

At that time there were travel restrictions between the two countries. So we decided to record the song in Dubai.

Are you open to more film offers?

R - Why not? I am looking forward to coming more often to India to perform on-stage and sing in films. I've always enjoyed giving performances in India.

Can you tell us a bit about your background…especially your musical roots?

R - I was born in India in Bikaner to a family of banjaras [gypsies] who moved to Pakistan when I was very young. I received no formal training in music and I still cannot read or write. Be it a folk song, ghazal or a film track, I sing from my heart. But the musicians have to work hard on me as they have to first teach me the lyrics orally because I cannot read.

If you've received no formal training then you must have worked very hard on your voice training….

R - Not only have I never received any formal training in singing but I have seldom practiced as well. The only riyaz that I do is the namaz that I offer every morning. Allah has blessed me with this voice.

Since when have you been singing?

R - I've been singing ever since I started to speak. But I gave my first formal performance in 1965 when I was 17.

Since your first Hindi film song Lambi judaai was such a hit why didn't you sing more?

R - As I said I have come whenever I am invited to sing. Apart from Lambi judaai and now Ashqaan Di Gali I have sung in Sanjay Khan's Sarzameen and Heer Ranjha.

Is it true that you had some throat problems sometime ago and you almost gave up singing?

R - Yes sometime back I suffered a serious throat infection that kept me from singing for a long time. My voice was restored after a surgery. Aap ke pyaar aur duaon ne mujhe nayi jindigi de di aur main gaane ke liye haazir hu (your love and blessings have given me a new life and I am here to sing for you.)

Which in your opinion is your most favourite song?

R - It's like asking a mother which is her most favourite child. I love all of them. But if you ask me to make a specific choice then I'd say I am particularly fond of the Qawwali Shehbaaz Qalandar.

Who are your favourite Indian musicians and singers?

R - I have great respect for Naushad sahab and I consider him my guru. I am also a great admirer of Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar and my most favourite song is Lata's Rasik Balma.

Do you think there will be a more frequent exchange of artists now with the improved relations between India and Pakistan?

R - I have always prayed for peace between the two countries so that art and culture can thrive. Only if there is aman will singers like us prosper. So let's all pray that love and harmony prevails not hatred and tension.

First Dosti bus from Lahore brings Reshma
Varinder Walia
Tribune News Service

Wagah, January 20
Named ''Dosti'' (friendship), the bus from Pakistan that entered Indian territory today flaunting the national flags of both the countries on its front screen, bridged the gap between two Punjabs (East and West), that were divided by the Radcliff Line 58 years ago.

However, the famous folk singer from Pakistan, Reshma, who got her air tickets cancelled to board the inaugural bus, was the star attraction on the occasion. The melodious voice of Reshma, who was accompanied by her daughter and other relatives wafted through the Joint Check Post and there was pin drop silence as everyone listened with rapt attention.

For Reshma it's been a ''lambi judaai'' (long separation) from Amritsar and her fans welcomed her with open arms today. It has been over two decades since she sang the song ''lambi judaai'' for Subhash Ghai's film 'Hero'. ''I really wanted to pay obeisance at Harmander Sahib'', she said.

The people showered rose petals as the Punjab Police band played the song ''Ghar aaya mera pardesi…'' when the bus entered the Indian territory.

As music knows no barriers so a few stanzas from her famous songs like ''Hai o rabba nahion lagda dil mera …'' enthralled all those who had gathered here to welcome the ''Dosti'' bus.

Born in Bikaner, near the India-Pakistan border in Rajasthan, Reshma's family had migrated to Pakistan at the time of Partition.

''What is the difference between India and Pakistan? We're one people, one nation. There is no difference in the minds of artists and common man,'' she said.

Meanwhile, the third road link between the two countries opened today as the first Lahore-Amritsar bus crossed the Joint Check Post at the Wagah border a little behind the scheduled time of 11.30 am. The bus from Pakistan would arrive in Amritsar every Friday and would return the next day. The Indian bus ''Punj Aab'' (named after five rivers in the state) will leave every Tuesday and would return on Wednesday. In all 26 persons, including four Indians, Pak officials and mediapersons arrived here today.

The trial run on the Amritsar-Lahore bus route had been completed in December. Two road links operational earlier were the Delhi-Lahore and Srinagar-Muzaffarabad links, while the only open rail link is between Lahore and Attari. Two more road and rail links are expected to become operational in February, when the Amritsar-Nankana Sahib bus and Munnabao-Khokrapar train services will start.

The first-ever bus service between Amritsar and Nankana Sahib, linking the city of Golden Temple with the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev — the founder of the Sikh faith— will begin by next month-end.

Pakistan and India launched their first bus link between Delhi and Lahore in 1999. The service resumed in July 2003 after being suspended following the attack on Parliament. The second bus link opened between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad in PoK in April last year.

Mr Fardosh Alam , Joint Secretary , Ministry of Communication, Pakistan, hoped that there was possibility of opening Visa Centres at Amritsar and Lahore so that the passengers did not face inconvenience . ''With the grace of Allahtala the bus service will bring people of both the countries closer. The bus service would also help in increasing trade between both the countries'', he said and added that people from Pakistan were very much excited and a large number of them had gathered at Lahore to witness the flagging off ceremony.

Mr Sardul Singh , Excise Minister , Mr Raj Kumar, an MLA , Mr Sunil Dutti, Mayor Municipal Corporation, Mr Kirandip Singh Bhullar, Deputy Commissioner and Mr Narinderjit Singh, State Transport Director, were among those who received the bus.

The Jubilee Showman : Subhash Ghai

By IndiaFM News Bureau, October 23rd, 2003 - 1500 hrs IST

Subhash Ghai needs no introduction! The showman of Bollywood, Ghai remains one of the most successful filmmakers in Bollywood. Spanning a career of more than 30 years in the Hindi film industry, he has more than 15 films to his credit, of which all have met with Silver and Golden jubilee success.

Born in Nagpur and brought up in Delhi, he completed his B.Com from Punjab University and then went on to Pune for a two year Diploma course in film making from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).

Little known facts about Subhash Ghai

Not many might be aware that Subhash Ghai had started his film career as an actor in the early 1970's with minuscule bit roles in Aradhana and Taqdeer. He went on to act in films like Natak, Sherni, Umang (1970), Bharat Ke Shaheed (1972), Do Bachche Dus Haath (1972), Kunwara Badan (1974), Grahan (1976), Khan Dost (1976) and Gumrah (1977).

The Beginning

It was in 1974 that he penned his first script, which after being rejected by seven producers was finally approved by N N Sippy. And that's how 'Kalicharan' came out in 1976 and turned out to be an instant hit at the Box office. The most notable aspect of his debut success was that prior to Kalicharan, Ghai had never assisted any other director.

Star-Trek

The Star-maker introduced several new talents in Bollywood who further went on to make a name for themselves in the Hindi film industry. He gave a stunning start to Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri in Hero, added momentum to Madhuri Dixit's career in Ram Lakhan, brought down the Nepali beauty Manisha Koirala in Saudagar along with Vivek Mushran and introduced Mahima Chaudhary and Apurva Agnihotri in Pardes.

The Showman Poll
Which is your favorite Subhash Ghai directed film? Participate in the poll now and find out whether your choice is in line with the other surfers or not.
Production House

  • He married Rehana Farooqui from Poona and re-christened her as Mukta Ghai. Under her name, Ghai launched his production banner – Mukta Arts (in partnership) on October 24, 1978 wherein he made Karz. Since then Ghai is known for announcing his forthcoming ventures on 24th October.
  • With Hero (1983) his production company went independent as Mukta Arts Pvt Ltd.
  • Another production banner, Suneha Arts, was established for Ram Lakhan (in association with Ashok Ghai).
  • For Trimurti, Ghai handed over the director's hat to the late Mukul S. Anand restricting himself to the producer's seat. Generating tremendous hype and expectations for it's cast and crew combination, the movie unfortunately turned out to be the first flop under the Mukta banner.
  • On October 24, 1999 Subhash Ghai went global launching his new banner -- Mukta Arts International Pvt Ltd.
This year (2003) is special for Ghai, as it marks the Silver jubilee anniversary of his production house.

Forthcoming ventures

There's talk that Ghai is announcing multiple projects this year. He is planning to start films with
  • Abbas-Mustan (Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Celina Jaitley)
  • Raj Kanwar (cast under finalization)
  • Sanjay Chhel
  • A film with newcomers, titled KRSNA
  • And finally the much-awaited project where he will direct himself (after a long hiatus)

Filmography (As a Director)

Movie Details
Kalicharan (1976) Ghai's directorial debut is remembered for Shatrughan Sinha's hard-hitting performance, Ajit playing the character of Lion (though he pronounced it Loin throughout the movie) and the NO 17 clue (i.e LION read upside-down, backside-front).
Vishwanath (1978) The Subhash-Shatru pair striked again with Vishwanath, remembered for it's melodramatic dialogue "Jali ko aag kahte hain, bujhi ko raakh kahte hain, jis raakh se barood bane usey Vishwanath kahte hain".
Gautam Govinda (1979) The film starred Shatru (again) with Shashi Kapoor and Mousmi Chatterjee.
Karz (1980) This reincarnation drama differed from others in its league for the fact that it wasn't a love story but had a revenge theme weaved in. Remembered for its catchy tracks "Om Shanti Om" and "Ek Hasina Thi", Laxmikant Pyarelal won the award for Best Music for this film.
Krodhi (1981) This Dharamendra - Shashi Kapoor starrer was re-released one week prior to the release of Khalnayak in 1993.
Vidhaata (1982) This mega starrer with Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar and Sanjay Dutt also gave Amrish Puri his credibility as a villain in mainstream cinema.
Hero (1983) Two stars were born – Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri. LP's music score is still remembered for one of the best flute tunes played in Hindi music.
Meri Jung (1985) Remembered for the court room scene where Anil Kapoor consumes poison just to win a case. Also Javed Jaffery made his debut as a villain with break dancing skills in the song Bol Baby Bol.
Karma (1986) The fact that it was the first Hindi film to be recorded in 4 track stereophonic sound (the sound system that ruled the theatres before Dolby) attracted the video-stuck audiences back to the theatres. This mega-budget, multi-starrer (Dilip Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Naseeruddin, Sridevi) also won the National Award. Anupam Kher played Dr. Dang, which turned out to be one of the most acclaimed negative characters portrayed on the Indian screen.
Ram Lakhan (1989) The film is remembered for the dynamic Jackie-Anil pairing as brothers on good and bad paths. LP's "Aye Ji O Jee" track ruled the charts. The film was a big boost in Madhuri Dixit's career.
Saudagar (1991) Two Bollywood stalwarts – Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar remembered for their on (and off) screen clashes. Bollywood gets a new talent - Manisha Koirala and a superhit song "Ilu Ilu".
Khalnayak (1993) The first thing that comes to mind from this movie is Bollywood's most controversial song "Choli Ke Peeche". Also Sanjay's jail escapade during the film's release kept the movie in news.
Pardes (1997) Ghai introduced another starlet Mahima Chaudhary. Kabir Lal's brilliant cinematography and the most reliable Shahrukh Khan went to make this film a Silver jubilee hit.
Taal (1999) It was the first Film ever to be insured. A.R.Rehman's music was the high point. This Anil-Ash-Akshaye love triangle was the first Indian film to hit the US Top 20 and the UK Top 10 Charts.
Yaadein (2001) Ghai's last attempt at direction (so far), this Hrithik-Kareena starrer made more news for it's product endorsements (Coke and Pass Pass). The film wasn't appreciated much by the local audience but did some good business overseas. Anu Malik's music was the saving grace.

The singer, the song

She has a voice of silk, a will of steel, eyes that dance and a heart of gold. RANA SIDDIQUI meets Reshma, the singing sensation that belongs to the entire Indus valley.

ALLAHRAKHI, ALLAH mafi, Allah shafi... No, one is not counting God's various attributes on the beads of a sacred 'tasbih' nor addressing someone. These are titles bestowed on cooking utensils like 'handiya' and big plates called 'parat' by one who added a unique dimension to music through her sonorous voice well defined in "Lambi Judai", "Damadum Mast Kalandar", "Sanjha Chulha Jalya" and more: This is Reshma, you guessed it right. In her kitchen housed at her Rachra Peer, Lahore residence, she will not let anyone touch these favourite utensils. For her, they are like members of the family, which otherwise consists of her two sons, Sunny and Latif, their wives and children - all musicians. A vegetarian by choice, she loves saag, missi roti, bajri and makki and never lets any one cook non-vegetarian food in her cooking pots. That is one aspect of her personality.

And there is another: Her subtle sense of humour that is sure to bring a smile to one's face. Tell her that she has lost weight and she promptly replies, "To kya? Main isse silim, smarat bhi to ho gayi" (So what? I have grown slim and smart because of this), but explains, "Doctors have advised me to curtail oily and spicy food." On the dais, she makes famed industrialist Vijayapat Singhania droop his head in shyness when she proclaims, "He is a hero and I am the heroine," in her trademark, innocent, rustic style. "My voice is like a bulldozer, if you still love it, I am obliged," is another nugget from this nave personality. She may overdo it, and spoil the decorum of a press conference for she still hasn't learnt the so-called etiquette desired there, but finally wins all hearts with her motherly attitude and a media-savvy approach. "Look out, you are attaching it, see that I don't get a shock!" is what she orders a TV representative who fixes a mike to her kurta for an interview.

Still agile, Reshma has lost none of the euphonic voice quality. Proof of this can be heard in the song "Ishq Te Gali Wich" in the Singhania produced film "Woh Tera Naam Tha", directed by Kuku Kohli.

"I have no training in classical music, I do not know even the 'r' of any raga. So when I sing and miss any technical aspect, please forgive me," is what this daughter of Haji Mamad Mushtaq, a trader of camels from Malashi, Rajasthan keeps on repeating. "We were banjaras, who would go to Pakistan to sell camels from Bikaner and buy horses and cows from there several decades ago," she recalls. They would camp anywhere, sing folk songs and move ahead. Folk songs that many people have heard in Lata Mangeshkar's voice, such as "Yara Sili Sili", "Kesaria", "Mera Piya Ghar Aaya", "Akhiyon Ko Rahene De", were first sung by Reshma, informs Naveen, her adopted son who lives in India, himself a post graduate in classical music.

It all started when a television and radio producer heard her singing Sufiyana Kalam at Shahbaaz Kalandar's shrine in Pakistan and invited her to come to Karachi and sing for Pakistan radio. She started with "Laal Meri" and the rest, as they say is history.

Reshma may have sung in a Hindi film after more than two decades, but she is a regular visitor to her native country. Maharaja Gaj Singh of Jaipur invites her each year on January 13, his birthday, when she stays at the Umed Sing palace.

"For me, there is no difference between India and Pakistan, they are like my two eyes," says the singer who now plans to come out with an album of Sufi songs with Times Music. As for her stage shows, she has curtailed them, for, "It has become more Westernised."
